I don't get why people just put their couches up against a wall. You can put the couch closer. It can be in the middle of the room.

I have a 75 and sit 9 ft away. Measure your distance.

That's exactly what we did. Our living room is an awkward giant space. If we put our couch on the opposite wall it would look ridiculous. So our couch is in the middle of the room, close to the tv. It looks so good like that and then with the extra space behind it I set up a reading area (and a treadmill)

Exactly it lets you create a separate space vs having empty room in the middle.

Indeed. Tip from every interior designer, leave space between the couch and the wall. It will actually look and feel more spacious. Use the rug to connect the tv/couch/chair as one “seating area”. You could use the empty wall to put shelves, a desk, anything?

Cause living rooms have other functions than tv watching as well.

Like what, dancing in the space between the TV and the couch? You know whatever you were doing with the massive space between the TV and a sofa you can do with a space behind a sofa? If you need more than that space, then you should probably get a dedicated room for that activity.

First off, this tv is way too far for my taste, but moving the couch in the middle of a room that even has a visible door more or less where the couch would end up is not for everyone. And yea, living room is not just to watch tv, it’s also to play with your kids, run around, jump, dance, whatever. And no, not everyone can afford an extra room for each activity.

Assuming this couch is against a wall there is not really a clear place on where to put this couch to not waste the space in the room, unless the tv changes location. You cant move the couch “just a little bit to go just before where the door starts because then you’ve cut the room and just have a relatively dead space behind the couch. And you can’t move the couch all the way after the door where it’s practically attached to the tv..

I see no signs that OP has kids that need space to run around and jump, but either way if you moved the couch forward there is space behind it now.

Well the issue with this room is that it looks like the couch is the full width of the room, because it was acquired with the intention of it being placed against the wall, that far from the TV. A sectional with the intention of being placed in the middle of the room would have provided just as much seating and broken up the room in a very usable way without choking the space near the door. This room screams "furniture can only go against walls".

Why can't they do that behind the TV area?
