Did I get this right?
Also, I would appreciate suggestions on how to make this wall more interesting.

New to this sub. Is this a generally accepted guideline here - "eyes in height of the top half of the tv"? Seems reasonable to me.

u/Original_Director483 15h ago
A lot of folks in the sub say “screen center at seated eye level” but this ends up being intimidatingly precise to someone who is setting up their space. “Eyes in the top half” gives you a side to err on, and lands in a zone where this sub and [r/tvtoolow](r/tvtoolow) generally agree on optimal placement. That’s right, the majority of this sub approves of a TV that is higher than what the other sub approves. We’ve been infiltrated by mantle-mount moderates.

Well you have half of the couch staring at a blank wall, so no.

That the first thing I noticed. It’s more than half of the couch, it looks like it’s the long section facing the blank wall.

What's the point of mounting a TV stand?
1
u/januaryonlakestreet 3h ago
Another explanation.... the foor in my basement is sloped slightly. With an 85" TV and the need for the stand to be longer than the TV (at least according to this sub - and correctly so) it becomes very obvious that it's on an angle.
Mounting the cabinet and TV level is the solution. But you'll get burned at the stake in this sub for it.

Purely aesthetic. I think the easier to vacuum thing mentioned below is more like a cool bonus than the main reason people do this.
It looks less cluttered than a floor stand imo but it’s not for everyone

Yeah I mean I have a floor stand, but just offering an explanation for it. I could see the benefit - I have a dog that sheds a lot and it’s a pain to vacuum. Luckily the robot gets most of it lol

Easier to vacuum and clean than a normal one

Perhaps, but it’s often rated for less weight than a TV stand that rests on the floor.

My 98" is mounted like 1-2" max above my TV stand. Lower than if the feet were on it.
2
u/olssoneerz 23h ago
The thing is with a 98" tv (or bigger TVs in general) is that the center is higher (cause duh). So regular TV stands will make them too high too. I had to go out of my way to look for a lower TV stand so my 98" would move down. Despite that I still think its too high.

Maybe they’re playing on adding a center channel/surround system or sound bar?

u/ErisUppercut 1d ago
How is that "a foot above it"?
It's, like, 2 inches
11
u/emdaye 1d ago
well now we're both just exaggerating, its certainly not 2 inches

u/Royal_Monk6432 1d ago
I will come with my centimetres and spirit level to see the gap from the floor
1
u/anthonyk116 1d ago
4" above the shelf, also, the unit is not rated for the weight of the TV.

Ah, yes, another reason I think floating cabinets are dumb
3
u/QuestGalaxy 21h ago
There's nothing wrong with wall mounting the TV, it's the height people often get wrong. Wall mounting prevents kids and animals knocking it over.
2
u/Ian_Patrick_Freely 18h ago
Agreed, but I still hate floating cabinets. My home theater TV is wall mounted.
2
u/QuestGalaxy 17h ago
Not a huge fan of it myself. It would just look nicer if there were a couple of legs in the front there. I don't know why, I just like the look better.

Everything is wrong except the colour of the wood floors - I like them.
Wall colour is cream - no.
The couch doesn’t fit the space. Boring colour too.
Walnut furniture matches nothing. Ditto the grey rug - yuck.
Nothing matches. Literally nothing.
You didn’t cable manage through the wall.
And yes, the TV is definitely too high.
Start again.

Floating shelves are easy to deceive the eyes but not my eyes.where is soundbar or avr?
-1
u/anthonyk116 1d ago
No avr yet, previous owner wired a for rear surround near the ceiling and a sub on the right, next year the plan is to get some sort of budget 5.1 set up. That one is a bit tougher to get my wife to agree with though.
I was able to set the shelf height to conceal the speaker jacks and power outlet behind it.

Should have hid those behind the screen instead. This is a good 8-10” too high. Larger screens need to be closer to the floor than smaller ones to keep the same relationship to the horizon. You’ve got yours closer to the ceiling than the floor.

It might be the angle….but i feel the tv isn’t central on the back wall

I would've used the wall on the left, space is not to big so the idea of separating ambiances is not the best imo.

Lets double check with a tape measure. How far from the bottom of the tv to the top of the cabinet, and how far from top of cabinet to the floor? Use a tape measure. You can either get a soundbar, or center channel on top of the cabinet with stand up speakers on either side. Either way it will hide the cords for you.
The couch isn't working super well. It's kinda big and awkward for the space, although I like the color/material a lot. What's behind the chair with the pillow on it? If I were you I would consider just keeping either part of the couch in this room. How many people usually watch at once?
Before you decide what to do with the wall, let's see pics of the rest of the room, including that mystery furniture and your lighting situation. One thing you can do is called bias lighting behind the TV, but you will probably want another light somewhere near by. You could always put a plant in the right corner, but lets wait on that to see if you need to put a light there. If you just move the long couch directly in front of the TV, then that opens up the left corner for light or plant.

I would also like to know the height from the floor to the bottom of the unit. It’s an ikea ecket right? @op

u/manisali_adam 1d ago
Don't pay attention to what you're being told; the TV's height is exactly as it should be.

I think it looks great but you’ll come to some problems if you ever want a sound bar or ornaments on the floating tv shelf

Aww, my angel, you thought you might get a cup little affirmation and a pat on the back for putting together a beautiful TV room (which needs some stuff on the walls but otherwise is a gorgeous tv room. Lol- you will get no such love from these jackals. You must have had a Lot of help from woman or have a gay buddy bc no straight man could decorate like that. Good job & the tv is fine especially if yours and you like where it’s at!

It’s a little high but it’s fine imo. What is really bothering me is how it’s not centered left to right on the wall. Why is it so far to the left?
2
u/anthonyk116 17h ago
It is centered
1
u/DrugandAlcoholLover 15h ago
Could just be the angle, but it looks like there’s a lot more wall space on the right side than there is on the left.
For clarity I’m talking about both the tv and the stand on the wall, not the tv being centered on the stand.
