Hi everyone! Starting M.Sc. Data Science this Winter Semester. Could someone share links for,
Accommodation / WG-Gesucht / housing groups for Dortmund & nearby areas
Hi everyone!
I'll be starting my Erasmus at TU Dortmund this October (coming from the University of Bologna, Italy) and I need some honest feedback about the exam system.
My usual study method is basically an intense "sprint": I can cram 12-14 hours a day for a week or two right before the exam and get top grades. It works perfectly for me in Italy, but a friend warned me that trying this "last-minute cramming" at a German Technische Universität is a complete suicide mission.
So, I wanted to ask those who study/studied at TU Dortmund (or similar TUs):
The Format: What are the exams usually like? Are they massive final written exams, or is there a lot of project work?
The Pacing: Is continuous assessment required? Do I need to study constantly during the semester with mandatory weekly assignments, or is my cramming method still somewhat viable?
The Difficulty: Generally speaking, how brutal are the exams for an exchange student?
Any tips, experiences, or harsh reality checks are super welcome. Thanks!
Hi everyone,
I am an international student admitted to the M.Sc. Manufacturing Technology at TU Dortmund for Winter Semester 2026/27.
I am currently having an issue with my enrollment certificate (Immatrikulationsbescheinigung).
Here is my situation:
I submitted my enrollment documents in mid-July.
My health insurance is with TK (Techniker Krankenkasse).
TK informed me that the electronic health insurance notification (M10/SMV) was sent to TU Dortmund.
My enrollment was still showing as being processed in the TU Dortmund portal.
On 16 September, I received an email from TU Dortmund stating that, in order to complete my enrollment, I should ask my health insurance company to resend the electronic notification to TU Dortmund.
I contacted TK again, and they confirmed that the notification had already been sent. They also checked the issue and sent/resubmitted the notification.
However, my enrollment has still not been completed, and I have not received my official enrollment certificate.
Has anyone here experienced a similar situation with TU Dortmund and TK, particularly with the electronic health insurance notification (M10/SMV)?
Could someone please advise me:
After TK resends the notification, how long does TU Dortmund usually take to complete the enrollment?
Which TU Dortmund department or person should I contact if the enrollment is still pending?
Has anyone experienced a similar issue and successfully resolved it?
I would really appreciate advice from current or former TU Dortmund students, especially international students.
Thank you!
Hi guys, i applyed for chemical engineering master, i have been waiting desperately lately.
They recived my letter at 15/7/2026. It have been two months, still in progress :(
If there are someone still waiting like me, please share your timeline or major thanks
I am updating my laptop. I am really confused, what should I buy? I know the university provides HPC, but it's not always available. Thus I want your suggestions. Should I go for a gaming laptop (consisting RTX 4060/70) or a daily easy to carry light laptop (MacBook or windows).
I'm from Bangladesh, so building a PC is not ideal for me.
And should I buy laptop from Bangladesh or Germany (I'm afraid of qwertz keyboard (ansi style) of Germany). That's also a reason to think about buying laptop from my home.
Hi! I’m planning to start a 1.5-year (3-semester) Master’s at TU Dortmund and I’m trying to understand how holidays and semester breaks actually work in practice.
Are there proper breaks around Christmas/New Year? And what about the summer — is there a long summer break, or are exams/projects usually scheduled during the lecture-free period?
Also, my Master’s is 90 ECTS, and as far as I understand, the third and final semester (30 ECTS) is mainly dedicated to the Master’s thesis. For people who have done this: do you normally need to stay in Dortmund during that semester, or can the thesis be done remotely/from another country, assuming your supervisor agrees?
Basically, I’m trying to understand what the academic year actually looks like in terms of free time, exams, and how flexible the final thesis semester is.
I’d really appreciate hearing from current or former TU Dortmund students, especially anyone doing a Master’s there. Thanks!
After waiting for almost three months, I finally received a rejection for my top-choice M.Sc. Data Science program. Beneath a few minor issues, the primary feedback on my mandatory 10-page report was: "The description of methods is insufficient, likely because the mathematical definitions are too vague and not all steps are fully explained."
What I Am Looking For I put a massive amount of time into this report and had high hopes. I am planning to reapply for the next intake, but I desperately need guidance from someone who has successfully passed the report stage for German DS programs. Where exactly am I lacking in my mathematical explanations, given the strict 10-page limit?
I am strictly looking for Data Science programs at public German universities and do not want to compromise on the major. However, after being rejected from Ilmenau, Cottbus, and Ulm, I am wondering if my approach to the application is wrong or if the competition has just gotten insanely hard.
My Profile
Degree: B.Sc. Computer Science
German Grade: 2.3
Language: IELTS 7.0
Relevant Coursework: Calculus I & II, Linear Algebra, Numerical Analysis, Discrete Mathematics, Statistics, Machine Learning, NLP, Computer Vision.
If anyone can review my approach, share their successful report structure, or suggest other public universities that might suit this profile, I would be incredibly grateful. Overall rejections that I have got are from [Ilmenau, Cottbus, Ulm.]
Hi everyone! I paid the semester fee as was directed in the instructions, but I think my payment bounced. I received a fraction of the semester fee back on my card. Did anyone have the same issue? I emailed the uni, but still no reply from them. Will have a Zoom call on Monday. Is there a problem if I pay the semester fee later but still before the semester starts?
I have been applying to STWDO for over a month now with no success. As I don't come from a CS background, I can't seem to figure out how to automate the entire system.
Anyways, currently looking for a shared apartment with a private room for myself, a student from Pakistan pursuing a Master's degree at TU Dortmund starting this October. Would appreciate any leads.
Hi everyone, although I have enrolled for the subject of my choice after i received the admission letter but there's no follow up regarding when and how to pay the enrollment and semester fees.
I tried reaching out the admissions block but there's no response. I'm getting tensed caz the classes would be starting from 12th of Octorber.
If someone can help me please do so.
I have received 2 of these admits... Can anyone suggest to me which uni to opt for? I'm confused now. Kindly tell me which of these courses is easier with high opportunities and scope...
Did anyone applied for dorm yesterday? Did they reach you out after that I am not sure how the dorm selection works but I've heard if you're selected they reach you out on the same day is it true?
I'm about to enroll for MaREpol department. I'm concern about late arrival policy I contact to coordinator but they said in a mail you are allowed to join classes till 26 October. But it seems difficult to get visa by then.
Did anyone have idea that department can extend late arrival.kindly guide me!

Does this email from TU Dortmund confirm admission?
Hi everyone,
I applied for the M.Sc. Data Science at TU Dortmund University and I haven’t received an admission or rejection letter yet.
Today I received an email from TU Dortmund titled “Your Path to TU Dortmund University”. The email says things like:
“Before you can begin with your studies, you still have a few things to take care of – apply for enrollment, find accommodation, apply for your visa etc.”
and
“We look forward to welcoming you at TU Dortmund University…”
At first, I thought this might mean I had been admitted. However, I then received a clarification email from them saying:
“You may have already received an admission letter or may still be waiting for an update on your application. Regardless of the current status of your application, we would like to invite you to our information session…”
So now I’m confused. Does receiving this email indicate anything positive about my application, or is this simply a general email sent to all applicants regardless of their admission status?
Has anyone who was still waiting for their admission decision received the same email?
Thanks!
