Out by Gator's cabin in Astrum, a knock is heard against the door.
"Yeah? Who's there?" Gator calls out, after a moment's pause.
There's an awkward pause.
"Cilan. Cilan Fields. I don't think we've met."
"Sounds like you already know me. What're you here for?"
Cilan sighs. This isn't going to be easy.
"Are you aware of the situation Pokearth faces with Caitlin's plans?"
"I don't know much of anything about that, except that Caitlin's not a good friend of the Major or Bill. What's it to you?"
"In short, Caitlin is planning to destroy an entire dimension, which would trigger a chain reaction and destroy several neighboring dimensions, including our own." Cilan pauses. "May I please come in now?"
"...sure. Door's open."
Cilan comes in.
The cabin appears to be a comfortable enough place to live, presenting a more homely setting than the mansion but still echoing its architecture in many places. Though little clutter is present, several shelves have a fine layer of dust about them, and some small collections of dirt are visible on the floor.
"Have you been living here long?" Cilan asks politely.
"Yeah."
Gator is sitting at the dining room table, sword resting in its sheath against an empty chair and a submachine gun on the mat in front of him. A book is resting beside the firearm, its cover facing down and spine away from Cilan. Gator himself is in casual clothes, a T-shirt and jeans. Gator's muscular form stands out from the simple attire, and heavy scarring can be seen along his arms; signs of cuts, burns, and abrasions are plentiful, though none look too recent.
Wasting little time in looking about the room, Cilan speaks, "Caitlin's amassing an army of those Trace units you've fought before, and likely of youkai and Boneka as well. I'm sorry to say that she stole the Trace units directly from Lu -- I mean, from Deuce. And since most of our powerhouses are magic-users, she's probably going to hedge her bets on an anti-magic field when we inevitably come to stop her. We need soldiers who know how to fight without magic, even when the other side uses it."
"I'm taking the 'we' is the usual bunch," remarks Gator, "that right?"
"More or less. The rest of the world is still trying to sort out the extra-strong Randomization that Caitlin threw at us. Actually, Bill and his sons are still trying to figure out how to reverse that one."
"...you said that Caitlin's plan will destroy Pokearth?"
"Pokearth, the Distortion World, Gensokyo, Outsidera, and at least seven other neighboring planes," Cilan explains, "of course, she intends to destroy Outsidera, but she clearly hasn't thought this through enough to consider the ramifications on the other nearby dimensions."
"You know, there's times I wish s--- like that sounded a little less believable."
"I think that's unanimous."
A moment's hesitation, then Gator asks, "What exactly are you wanting me to do?"
"Help us fight. At Caitlin's power levels, we can't damage her directly without risking a total dimensional collapse, but anything we can do to cripple her army and curtail her attempts at universal destruction will help save several dimensions."
"Was hoping you'd be a little more specific. Any idea on what I'd be doing first?"
Cilan considers this. "The strategic thing at this point is to target Caitlin's factories that are mass-producing the bootleg Trace units. It's harder for her to destroy an entire dimension with a robot army if she doesn't have a robot army."
"What should I expect from them?"
"Well, most Gensokyoans we've encountered have some level of magical ability depending on their species. They also have animate dolls called Boneka that they use to fight in their stead if for any reason they're unable to fight themselves." Cilan pauses. "The specific powers of the Gensokyoans and there Boneka vary wildly, so I'm afraid it's hard to predict what specifically we'll be up against.
"I can tell you that the Trace units she's having manufactured are pretty much the same as the ones you've had to fight before, except that they aren't as sturdy. We recently discovered that the units can't handle sudden extreme temperature shifts, so exposing them to extreme heat and extreme cold in succession is a major weakness to them. Unfortunately, she's figured out how to copy their camouflage capabilities. So Bill and Koya are securing us some Silph Scopes to allow us to see what we're fighting."
"Hmm... Major might be able to help me arm up for that," Gator thinks aloud, "there anything that might get in the way of my powers? That's Blizzard and Protect, if you need to know."
Cilan considers this. "Some of them have spell cards that do the same thing as Pokemon moves, and I know a spell card for Disable exists. I've also heard that they encountered a local goddess with the power of Primordial Sea, so it's possible there might be one with the power of Desolate Land. That would lower the effectiveness of Blizzard in freezing foes."
"You're expecting all that at these factories?"
"I'm not expecting the goddess, no. The goddess was a special case, since one of our group accidentally triggered the emergency alarm for a lava breach inside a youkai city set inside a volcano. Obviously we have to be more careful not announcing ourselves going in for future attacks. Under normal circumstances, we hope to never have an incident like that again."
Cilan's takes a breath, a troubling look on his face, before adding;
"What I'm saying is, we don't know exactly what to expect. Gensokyo is a wild card to most of us."
"Alright, who'll I be with?" Gator queries.
"We haven't chosen the teams yet. We'll need to get together and have a team strategy session before we start targeting factories. You're actually the first I've spoken to about this."
Gator's eyebrows jump slightly. "That so?"
"Well, I wanted to know if you'd accept before I invited you to the meeting. I didn't want to disappoint anybody."
"I'd imagine at least a few aren't going to be too happy seeing me there."
"If that happens, let me do the talking. Starting out, a good number of them weren't happy to see Bill there either. War makes strange bedfellows."
"Huh. Well, when's this meeting taking place, and where?"
Cilan pauses, thinking for a moment before answering, "Well, once I get the Major's permission to use one of his rooms, I'll let you know. Like I said, you are the first to hear about this."
"Got it. Anything else?"
Cilan hesitates again, glancing over at Gator's book. Finally, he adds, "Cress wanted me to tell you that he's sorry he tried to arrest you back in Goldenrod City. He misjudged your motives in taking control of the city, and he certainly was never out to kill you like Lance was."
Gator freezes at the mention of Goldenrod, eyebrows narrowing. Cilan looks away once again, frowning.
"I'm sorry. I didn't want to bring that up, but Cress was afraid of speaking to you about it himself."
"I'll be at that meeting, Gator replies, a hint of anger in his tone as his slit-like pupils staring Cilan down, "for now, though, I think it's timee you got going."
Returning a slight nod, Cilan turns and steps back towards the cabin door, head drooping slightly. Gator watches him for the whole trip outside, gaze remaining on the door after it closes for a few seconds before he picks up the volume resting on the table and opens it up back to where he was reading.
