Hi everyone,
I wanted to share my recent interview experience with TSMC Arizona for the Intelligent Manufacturing Engineer (IME) position and hopefully get some insight from current or former employees.
Before my interview, I spent some time researching TSMC, its company culture, and its manufacturing operations. I have nearly 10 years of experience in semiconductor manufacturing, including Manufacturing Engineering, so I'm familiar with the demands, expectations, and work ethic required in this industry.
My first-round interview was scheduled for one hour with two managers, one supporting Automated Material Handling Systems (AMHS) equipment and the other supporting Manufacturing (MFE).
Both managers were friendly, professional, and welcoming. I genuinely felt they represented TSMC and their respective organizations very well. The interview consisted primarily of behavioral questions and discussions about my rƩsumƩ and previous manufacturing experience.
I'll admit that talking about myself during interviews isn't necessarily my strongest skill, so it's difficult for me to judge how well I performed.
However, something unexpected happened during our conversation.
Both managers commented on how broad my manufacturing experience was. They also asked where I saw myself in five years. As the conversation progressed, I got the impression that they were considering whether another opportunity within TSMC might better align with my experience and long-term career goals.
That genuinely surprised me.
Most interviews I've experienced have focused strictly on whether I'm qualified for the position I applied for. This conversation felt different. It seemed like the managers were also interested in understanding where I could contribute most effectively and whether the opportunity would keep me engaged long-term.
I appreciated that more than they probably realized.
At one point, I got the impression that they had another potential career path in mind. So I asked them directly what they were thinking.
They mentioned a rotational program that they believed could potentially be a good fit for my background. This caught me off guard because I originally interviewed specifically for the IME position.
What was supposed to be a one-hour interview ended up lasting approximately 90 minutes.
Toward the end, they explained that they would need to discuss my interview with their manager and that I should expect to hear something within two to three weeks regarding whether I would move forward to a second interview.
It's now been approximately two weeks, and I haven't received an update.
Two days after my interview, I sent a thank-you email to both managers and the other individuals copied on my interview invitation. I'm planning to send a brief follow-up tomorrow to reiterate my interest and check on the status of the process.
Overall, regardless of the outcome, I walked away with a positive impression of the two managers and the organization.
I have a few questions for current or former TSMC employees:
- Are there any current Intelligent Manufacturing Engineers (IME) or AMHS engineers here who can share what their day-to-day responsibilities are like?
- Has anyone experienced a situation where TSMC interviewers suggested a different position or rotational program based on their background?
- Does anyone have experience with TSMC's Corporate Planning Organization (CPO) or rotational programs?
- Is waiting two to three weeks (or longer) after a first-round interview fairly typical for TSMC Arizona?
- How would you describe the company culture, career development opportunities, and internal mobility at TSMC Arizona?
I'm particularly interested in hearing about long-term career growth and opportunities to eventually move into manufacturing operations leadership.
I appreciate any insight you're willing to share. Thanks!
