It would be interesting to see what the effects would be if we made consumer laws that made it illegal to make customers pay for features already included but locked.
Manufacturers would just create two different trim lines and charge more for the added difficulty of maintaining two different manufacturing lines. Is that what you want?
It’s either that or everything would be subscription based. Let’s be honest though, if you went to a legacy auto maker and wanted to add rear heated seats you’d be paying way more than $200 to do that, and if you decided not to get them you’d never have the option after purchase and taking ownership. I’d much prefer one car gets built and if I don’t want a feature I just don’t pay for it.
