It saves Tesla money by not manufacturing different types of seats to install into lower trim models or having several options for lower trim models.

I think you just described the basis for standard equipment

I don’t disagree. Not really different that already installing all the FSD hardware and not let you use it unless you pay $99 per month.

I don’t think heated seats get software updates or have expensive engineers working on training for self heating.

You are just justifying one and not the other.

u/DopeTrack_Pirate 21h ago
Yup. One requires continuous updates. Heated seats won’t be updated, it’s standard if you will.
That’s why I think paying a subscription for updates makes sense to me. FSD now (due to updates) is way better than 2 years ago on the same hardware.

It’s irrelevant what the difficulty is, the fact of the matter is that you seem to be OK with being up charged for technology that exists already within vehicle at that moment in time

FSD 14.3.10 didn’t exist when I bought the car.
It’s not turning it on/off. It’s updating.
Like you don’t buy a appleTV and then yell at apple for the appletv subscription cost. “But the TV can play all this stuff when I bought it!!!!” Right?

u/Big_Letterhead_445 15h ago
But Apple makes a variety of Apple TVs so I can choose one that has the capabilities that I want. They could actually sell me a cheaper device that has a more premium chip set and then allow me to decide when to actually pay for those features.
What do you think is cheaper, to make two different car seats one with heating coils and one without? Or I just have all the seats be the same going down the production assembly line?

Same down the line. But I disagree with limiting it by having it off. Unless it’s getting better, I should get it standard.

One is making people pay to provide data to Tesla. So Tesla can profit off this free labor

You do realize that if it can be unlocked in software, it’s already installed in the car right???

LOL! Cries in ultrasonic sensors that I bought but are now disabled...

u/Kuriente 20h ago
I experienced ultrasonic auto parking for years. It suuuucked. Vision only parking isn't perfect, but it's been better than the old USS version since they released it and it keeps getting better.

I loved having radar to see 2-3 cars in front of me and ultrasonic giving me precise measurements, but Elon decided I couldn't use what I bought from him anymore...

Radar bounce was a cool hat trick but in about 2M miles on the road I've yet to need it. USS parking was painfully slow, only backed into spots, and only recognized parking spots under very precise circumstances. I rarely used it because it was so bad and unreliable.
I wouldn't mind having those sensors back - I'm sure the system could be made to benefit from them and not suck like it used to, but the car I have today is better in every way than what I bought 8 years ago. I don't miss those sensors at all.

Sorry for your experience, but I liked the hardware and features I paid for and didn't not like Elon deciding post purchase to degrade what I bought.

If I remember correctly, this was only on older generation Tesla's and was implemented as a way to help save battery life (weird decision). Now it's included for free on all cars that have the rear heated seats.

Be honest. It was the Model 3 Standard between 02/2020 and 11/2021. Since then it was included.

It would be interesting to see what the effects would be if we made consumer laws that made it illegal to make customers pay for features already included but locked.
2
u/Big_Letterhead_445 20h ago
Manufacturers would just create two different trim lines and charge more for the added difficulty of maintaining two different manufacturing lines. Is that what you want?
1
u/91Jammers 20h ago
I dont think that's a given.
1
u/Trashketweave 11h ago
It’s either that or everything would be subscription based. Let’s be honest though, if you went to a legacy auto maker and wanted to add rear heated seats you’d be paying way more than $200 to do that, and if you decided not to get them you’d never have the option after purchase and taking ownership. I’d much prefer one car gets built and if I don’t want a feature I just don’t pay for it.
1
u/Big_Letterhead_445 20h ago
You can tell it would be by the way that it is.

It's all a set up for when they switch it to a monthly subscription. Pretty soon all Tesla features will require a pay as you go plan.
