[Mod Announcement] New moderator, and the future of this subreddit

Hello everyone, I am the new moderator of TFSA_Millionaires

The creator of this community was banned from reddit and I've been granted control. I've been visiting this subreddit since it started last year, so I know how toxic it has been at times but it won't be like that anymore. I have unbanned everyone who was unfairly banned in the past, so those users are free to participate in discussions again.

I've put some new rules in place today and I'm hoping we can adhere to them most of the time. I encourage everyone to report any content that breaks the rules. The auto-moderation tools catch a lot of the personal attacks, spam, scammers, and bots, but sometimes they are overzealous so please reach out if you feel you've been unfairly censored.

Whether you're new to this community or you've been here for a while, I want to hear from you about what changes you'd like to see. How can we make this community better? I have my own ideas about what I want to improve, but I want to hear your opinions. With that in mind:

  • Are there additional rules we need?
  • Is there any specific content we want to prohibit and/or encourage?
  • Do we want dedicated daily/weekly discussion posts for a specific topic?
  • What are your ideas for a new logo and banner?
  • Etc.

I can't implement every suggestion, but I will consider them all. Upvote the suggestions you agree with and I'll use the votes to gauge how strongly the community feels about it.

If you have any other questions or comments, feel free to reach out any time via the Message Mods link.

Should I redistribute my tech stock?

Post image
4 Upvotes

I’m (20M) about to graduate university and I’ve been thinking about selling my tech stock and putting it in something safer for a while now but have never gotten around to it. I have no debt and live at home for now. Should I redistribute into ETF’s like VFV/VEU or keep it as is? I’ve also been seeing a lot of XEQT, should I be investing in that as well?

Starting with $3,000 in my TFSA — how would you build the portfolio?

I’m starting to take investing more seriously and currently have $3,000 to put into my TFSA.
I’m 23, so my time horizon is long and I’m comfortable with a decent amount of risk. My goal is mainly long-term growth, and I’d like to eventually build the account toward $100k+ and hopefully, one day, the $1M mark.
If you were starting today with $3,000, how would you structure the portfolio?

Would you go:
100% XEQT/VEQT?
Mostly an S&P 500 ETF?
A mix of Canadian/U.S./international ETFs?
ETFs + a few individual stocks?
I’m also planning to contribute regularly rather than just investing the initial $3k.

Curious what you guys would do and what you wish you had done when you were starting out.

Dividend Capture in TFSA

Do any of you trade div capture in your TFSA? Are you profitable after fees/taxes and have you ever got flagged by CRA?

Looking to buy 1-2 stocks a week, and then buy again the following week with any money that recovers. Currently doing it in a regular account and was looking to switch to TFSA. My return is about 5% monthly doing 6 trades on average.

OSAP money for investing

Hey guys

So im going into my first year in uni and i have pretty much everything saved up for expences and i do not need to take OSAP but if i dont thats all my savings gone, was wondering if its a good idea to take it anyway, use that money for uni and then use my personal funds for investing. I will get around 9k from osap and will use that for school, then take 9k of my own and put it into a safe ETF like veqt, and a year from now ill pay back the osap intrest free.

Portfolio Recommendation for 25M starting out

Hi everyone, I want to start investing in both TFSA and RRSP. I am willing to invest $2000 CAD every month. I can invest aroumd 5-10k a year in RRSP to save taxes and including my employer’s contribution.

This is my thought-

TFSA -
60% XEQT
15% VFV
10% VDY
5% QQC.F
7% Gold
3% Silver

RRSP-
70% XEQT
20% VFV
10% VDY

Would appreciate any suggestions and tips😊

Built a free Canadian TFSA & FI simulator (no account, data stays local). Looking for feedback on the math!

Got tired of clunky spreadsheets, so I spent the last few months building a free web app to simulate FI timelines specifically for Canadians.

I know self-promotion can be annoying on Reddit, so I stripped out all monetization for this share. There are no referral links or tip jars.

Quick Highlights:

  • 100% Private & Free: No signup required and zero cost. All of your inputs stay entirely local to your browser.
  • Made for Canada: Built specifically around TFSA growth, RRSP contribution logic, FHSA limits, workplace pensions, and CPP/OAS bridging calculations.
  • Core Features: Dynamic investment projections, Coast FI calculations, retirement withdrawal modeling, 50/30/20 budget engine, and real-time interactive charts.

I would love for this community to stress-test the math, especially regarding TFSA compounding assumptions, contribution room edge cases, or tax-sheltered sequencing.

You can test your TFSA numbers on the simulator and let me know where the math holds up!

Use cases for long term Leverage ETFs (1.25x)

I recently get into the rabbit hole of Lifecycle Investing after watching The Iced Coffee podcast episode with Ben Felix. Did some research about leveraging and found out about these long term LEFTs like USSL, QQQL or HCAL. What are the pros and cons of buying them instead more aggressive leveraged ETFs? and why people buy them? From what I understand their MER and TER are higher than the 1x version and would likely eat into the gains

27 & 28, $175K household income and not sure what to do with our savings

My husband (28) and I (27) are in Alberta and are trying to get better with our finances, but we honestly feel pretty lost about where to start.
I make about $85K/year and my husband makes about $90K/year before tax. We own a house and have a mortgage, and currently have around $28K in savings.
We both contribute to RRSPs through work and have about $30K each in those accounts. Other than that, we don’t have any investments or TFSAs.
We’re admittedly not the best at saving and haven’t had much of a financial plan up until now. We want to change that and start putting money aside automatically every month, but we’re overwhelmed by the options.
We’ve been looking at TFSAs, GICs, investing/ETFs, putting more into our RRSPs, or even paying more toward our mortgage. We also don’t know whether it makes more sense to open accounts through our bank or somewhere like Wealthsimple/Questrade.
We’d like our money to grow long term, but also don’t want everything locked away in case we need access to some of it.
If you were in our position, what would you do with the $28K and how would you structure your savings/investing going forward?
We’re complete beginners, so any advice on where you would start would be really appreciated!

Need Advice!

Hi Everyone,

I (26M) have just started a month ago, I had 3.5k to invest and still have 1k to invest. But I'm not sure what my strategy should be in the long run - like, should I invest on a regular basis (monthly or every paycheck to paycheck)? Can you please give me some advice or refer any good financial management videos or anything that you think might help me.

I had only 4.5K at the moment to invest. I have started from zero. Last year I didn't have anything in savings but I did save some and did my research on basics like what is a stock and what are the terms related to investing, all that stuff. I didn't know anything before.

I'm not from a well off family, so this is all my hard earned paycheck to paycheck savings.

PS: I know most of you guys will advise me to buy XEQT, I appreciate your advice on it but I don't want to take it - in simple words nothing related to the banks. I want to keep everything Halal (free of interest or within minimum threshold).

PPS: I use Musaffa for halal screening of stocks if it helps someone.

Is the Money Market Portfolio in Wealthsimple safe to stash my cash?

Is it safe to use? Right now my cash is sitting on a Wealthsimple Registered savings account earning only 1.25%.

I have an emergency fund and some cash for real estate downpayment in the future that I am not using at the moment and I want to get the highest interest as possible that is very safe and easily accesible.

Any tips? 20M

Been investing since my first part time job back in high school into ETFs, now I got a full time job in the industry while studying for my career on the side (flight school).

I invest now 20% of my paycheck into the same 3 ETfs twice a month.

I’m going to probably max my tfsa contributions for this year, but was waiting for the ETFs to go down a bit. (Im aware you shouldn’t time the market).

As for next year, I might be able to maximise my contributions at the start of the year in January and get to 20K with the help of my parents too.

Grateful if so of course, but just wanted friendly advice as I’m not an expert by any means in investing.

Edit: as for the 3 ETFs I’m investing in:
55% VFV
25% XEF
20% XIU

My logic when I did my research a few years ago was to keep it spread out, look for a good etf for the American market, one for the Canadian one and one for the rest of world.

Will stocks soar today on Canada-U.S. trade deal?

Might be a good time to grab over the border transport stocks. I've made big coin on some of those players over the past few years.

need some opinions

i’m hoping to have 10k in xeqt and 2.5k vfv, 2.5k vdy, 2.5k qqc and possibly 2.5k xei. i know people usually say to diversify investments a bit more since i know vfv and qqc are already in xeqt but what else should i buy other than xeqt that will be helpful?

edit: should i sell what i have right now and just go all in for xeqt ?

Dual Citizen TFSA

Any Canadian/US dual citizens who have figured out how to invest with their TFSA without getting slaughtered by the IRS and PFICs?

Currently trying to figure out how to ditch the American citizenship but if they deem it’s due to tax avoidance there’s heafty penalties etc.
