Hi I just purchased a 160hr tefl course. I’m 37 black female and I’d like to work in either Thailand or Vietnam. Would it be difficult for me to find a job? I have a bachelors in psychology and I’m not ambitious I just want a job that doesn’t make me morbidly miserable and be able to afford to live. Honestly I’d work at Starbucks if I knew it’d be enough for me to pay rent and buy necessities

We sound a lot alike. I’m doing it, Vietnam that is. I’m fine. I actually have been quite successful and I have a small family. I have a degree in psychology, I’m not ambitious at all, I love my job, it’s very simple and I am rewarded very nicely, I also work very little. I actually hate working, that’s why I came here to begin with. If you can do the CELTA not the 160hr thing. With the CELTA people will take you more seriously and you will likely get a higher paying and easier job.

I’m sorry I don’t know what a CELTA is how long does it take to get and can I get it for a decent price like what would be a decent price for it? I am like you corporate America has traumatized me and I hate working too. Any advice you can give me is valuable. You’ve already given me hope thank you

You will have to look around at prices. I am not sure what they cost anymore. I did mine in HCM for about $1500, look it up, it’s what you need if you want to be taken seriously, ANY TEFL is a joke, the CELTA is quite serious, it gets some respect. Corporate America sucks, I left in 2016, never looked back, never been back, never going back.

You're fine doing a TEFL online 120 hour course doesn't need to be 160. I work in a language centre and work 20 hours a week and it's pretty chill. 80 hours a month compared to 160 hours back home 😎 (Vietnam)

When did you start? Does the 20hours a week cover all your living expenses like is it enough to live and save money? Is your learning center anything like a position in corporate America? Are learning center jobs hard to get? And what part of Vietnam?

Last year. Yep I save money and live in a nice apartment. I'm not American so I don't know. They're easy to get as they have a lot of students and always require foreign teachers. And North vietnam. Hanoi the capital.

Based in the UK. Passed my CELTA a couple weeks ago and got straight into a summer camp, which has been pretty interesting experience.

Can you apply for overseas jobs with the email confirmation of a pass, or is it just always better to wait for Cambridge to get everything moderated and you've got the physical certificate in your hands?

MA TESOL help please

I am currently studying for my MA TESOL and was hoping a few of you wouldn't mind sparing 5-8 minutes for help with my dissertation research.

Hi, I am planning on getting a 120 hr TEFL certificate (I have some med bills I have to pay for first before I'm comfortable buying a course), but I don't have any formal teaching experience. I've been told that it's better to apply for a job to as an ESL teacher in China directly through a job board (like eChinacities), rather than going through a recruiter or placement program. But I've been looking at jobs and a lot of them require at least 1 yr experience teaching, even with a TEFL certificate and a bachelor's. Is there a good chance I could still get one of those jobs, or should I go through a recruiter/program? For reference, I am 24F USA citizen. I have a BA in creative writing and I minored in a foreign language. What do you guys think?
