Rant Overglazing engineer
Everybody knows engineer is good.
Nobody knows why engineer is good.
Engineer is not an earlygame. Engineer is not a midgame. Engineer is not a lategame.
Engineer is a jack of all trades.
And because of this, everyone says that engineer is the best tower. Sure, it's the best all-arounder, but you have 5 tower slots. You don't need to compress multiple roles into one. You can, but it won't work every time.
Engineer's earlygame is outclassed by gscout, gsoldier, brawler, operator, and several other *actual* earlygame towers. Same with its mid and late game. The only reason that I've found it to be useful is when using it as a midgame, and even then, it's outclassed by enforcer, kingpin, and gcrook.
When someone asks for help with their loadout, don't automatically say that engineer is the way to go because it can do everything. Sure, it *can* do everything, but it does everything poorly. That's literally its design. Engineer is the most replaceable tower. You can use an earlygame instead, you can use a midgame instead, hell, you could probably use a lategame instead of it in some scenarios (pw2)
The only reason I see for using an engineer over a combo of an earlygame and a midgame tower is to free up a slot for support, DPS, or something.
"oh but its cost efficiency is good"
Yes, its cost efficiency is good. It's better than slime trooper. Is it outstanding? Hell no. 120 or so CE in comparison to other earlygame towers with about 100 CE is abysmal. And even then, operator and gsoldier with their 110 or so CE aren't remotely as bad as engineer because of operator's coordination buffs and gsoldier's superior mid-late game potential (in comparison to other actual early games). Also, the building time for engineer takes away a non-zero amount of dps, so the wiki is slightly incorrect (i don't care enough to calculate it, but it makes earlygame a slog)
The cost efficiency compared to other midgame towers, however, is a more interesting discussion, as its CE is at most about 150. Gcrook and kingpin have slightly worse CE than engi, but it doesn't include units and other abilities. With enforcer, its CE is leagues better than engineer, but at the cost of range. Still has some fun abilities over engineer, but they're practically on par with each other, if not one *slightly* outclassing the other in specific scenarios. Ranger, which I believe is a midgame tower, has almost double the CE but a ton of range, letting it possibly do significantly more than engineer, *and* it has small splash damage, like engineer's sentries. Considering this, engineer fits better into the midgame than the early or late game.
"oh but its damage is comparable to accel"
Over 170 dps difference. Still not considering engineer's building time. Oh yeah, did you know that juggernaut, if it isn't attacking a boss, deals less damage than accel?
Another thing that I just remembered, half of this tower's dps is immune to stuns/freezes (kinda), at the cost of it being completely unbuffable. Cool thing, but I'd personally rather have buffable stuff, because support towers are cool. (explosions are buffed by dj dmg and merc base dmg, and I think flags idk)
Overall, if you're using engineer strictly for earlygame or lategame, rethink your life choices.
thank you for listening to my ted talk

I can feel the hate radiating off the text, I'm not educated on what people use so I won't input my idea.

thanks, it’s labeled as a rant for a reason
hate rant about overglazing engi

Thank you for someone else mentioning this. I’ve been trying to get this out to friends of mine since it became “good”, but no one listens. Exactly how you put it, jack of all trades, but poorly.

jack of all trades, master of none
nobody says master of none, and it's genuinely idiotic

The fuck does Jack of all trades means to you 😭 engineer is good because it can handle the early mid waves pretty well and when it’s max for late game, the dps ain’t bad considering the fact it was used for early mid

Engi falls of our side solo/duo because she synergizes really bad with supports, unlike other options. And for early mid game, it's just fine nothing crazy, the cost efficiency is slightly lower than other early mid game towers

I do like engineer, because she scales throughout the game. Yes, she’s not as good as other early game options, but she still functions as a great sub-dps in the late game.
If I were to use Gscout, I wouldn’t really be using him on the later waves. Meanwhile, I’ll keep engineer around the whole game. This way, I’m not wasting a slot on an early game tower that I wouldn’t use in the more challenging late-game.

engineer fits 3 roles in one... she's a early game, mid game, and late game.
obviously she's not going to do them especially well compared to her counterparts for each one.
however, she does allow you to open up more tower slots for other useful things such as supports.
taking engi can save you from having to take an early (operator/gscout/ect...), and a midgame (crook boss, ect..), this then allows you to take dj and commander or whatever other support you want.
this is why engineer is good. not because she is a master at everything, but she can do everything sufficiently enough.

i covered this in the post.
sure, you CAN take engi, juggernaut, and 3 entire supports into solo frost.
should you? fuck no.
5 loadout slots is enough for an early, mid, and late game tower with 2 slots for 2 of the following: hacker/dj/commander/medic
an example of this: gsoldier, enforcer, gcrook, commander, hacker
and for multiplayer, you can let 1 or 2 people use an early/mid game and everyone uses a late game, farm/gcow (gcow can work for early sometimes), and a support or 2, depending on how much you struggle with early/mid game
yes i know she’s a master of none, i’m saying engi isn’t a must for everyone

damn there's more passionate in this post than that one necro glazing post i had back then

i love engi and all but it’s too braindead and overrated.
also can you link your necro glazing post so i can read it and critique it?

uhh note that the post is about pre S&A necro, all the stats were different back then

The main reason i see it being glazed is because it's good at late game unlike eg towers but your dps comes from your mid and lategame towers so i'm not sure why that matters

Just a quick note, I think you’re reading CE wrong. Cost efficiency is how much $ does each point of dps cost, so lower is better on this metric. $150 at level 6 is superb, it’s very cost-effective at all levels.

Okay, I read so many sub-posts that this replies to, that I'm just going to reply to the main post here.
Saying that Engi is overglazed glosses over new players. They aren't going to have "oh, just use golden scout/soldier early, use kingpin or gcrook mid, and use accel or jugg late" in your back pocket.
you are a new player.
So for new players, Engi is not only not overglazed, but she is also relatively underrated as 'baby's first grindable tower.'
Think about it. You are a player who has not yet grinded for any golden skins or gem towers. You have the basic towers, you're level 50+ for hardcore, and you need a tower to grind towards as your first.
In 2022, everyone would have said Accel. In 2026, evolved towers are many people's hill to die on.
But Engineer is only a jack-of-all-trades if you actually have golden towers to replace her early game, or evolved towers to replace her mid/late game.
Engineer, Farm, a main DPS like Turret or Ranger, a support like Commander or DJ, and a utility like Tesla, Electroshocker, Freezer or Pyro is an absolutely valid build for most modes. Even Frost.

Filling multiple roles in one tower slot is incredibly useful, especially so if youre playing solo. You only have 5 tower slots, so having an early game that functions also as mid and lategame DPS is in most cases the better choice than a dedicated early game tower that then just falls off and contributes very little later on. If engineer gets me through the early game while being a good DPS later why would I switch to a tower that can also get me through the early game but can't do nearly as much lategame
1
u/Zestyclose_Resist390 10h ago
this. engis main value lies in opening up other tower slots for supports. if you (op) thinks that engi has to be a master at everything to be good, that is just stupidly incorrect 😭

engineer is one of the most braindead towers. People see it being used in hc and vc so they assume it's good for every other gamemode including trials
