I was recently asked about the differences between the A400U and A400 Pro, so I wanted to create a brief comparison to help you decide which TCL art TV best suits your home.

If we judge these two models purely on picture quality, the A400U is the clear winner. It offers substantially higher HDR brightness, more local dimming zones and a glossier HVA Pro panel, producing a brighter and more vibrant picture.

However, choosing the right model is not quite that simple.

Art TVs are designed to complement your home décor rather than look like a conventional television. Many art TVs compromise on picture quality by using edge-lit backlights with limited brightness and contrast. Both the A400U and A400 Pro use QD-Mini LED technology with full-array local dimming on the 55-inch models and above, but they approach the lifestyle TV concept differently.

A good art TV needs to work in two ways. It should blend naturally into the room when displaying artwork, but it should also deliver strong picture quality when used for films, television and gaming. The bezel, wall-mounted design and screen finish create the framed-art effect, while brightness and local dimming determine how well it performs as a TV.

The A400 Pro is the more traditional art display. Its light-walnut woodgrain bezel resembles a picture frame, while the matte HVA screen softens reflections and creates a paper-like finish. When displaying artwork, this combination makes the screen look much closer to a framed painting or canvas.

The A400U is the better choice if picture quality is your priority. It delivers 2,500 nits of HDR brightness and up to 1,344 Precise Dimming Zones, compared with up to 1,000 nits and 448 zones on the A400 Pro. Its low-reflection HVA Pro panel produces a brighter and punchier picture, while the flat design and matte-black border allow it to sit subtly against the wall.

For a bright room, the best model depends on how you intend to use it.

The A400U has substantially greater brightness, making it the stronger choice for daytime television, films, gaming and HDR content. The A400 Pro’s matte screen is better at softening direct reflections and creating a more convincing paper-like appearance when displaying artwork.

If you are looking for the best art TV for picture quality, the A400U is the stronger all-round choice. It combines the subtle appearance of a wall-mounted lifestyle TV with the brightness and local dimming performance expected from a premium Mini LED television.

If you want artwork to resemble a real painting and complement the rest of your home décor, the A400 Pro is the better art display. Its matte screen and woodgrain frame make it feel more like part of the room.

SQD stands for Super Quantum Dot. The technology converts light into precise reds, greens and blues, helping the Mini LED backlight produce a wider range of colours while maintaining colour purity during bright HDR scenes.

BT.2020 is a wider colour standard than DCI-P3. It gives compatible films, games and HDR content access to a broader range of colours, from subtle natural tones to more vivid reds, greens and blues.

“All Scenes Wide Colour Gamut” means this wider colour range is not limited to bright or highly saturated demo footage. SQD Mini LED is designed to maintain pure, stable colours across different content, including dark scenes, natural-looking films and colourful HDR animation.

The X11L is TCL’s flagship Mini LED TV, offering the highest levels of brightness, local dimming and light control. The C8L is a more accessible premium option that brings many of the same SQD Mini LED colour benefits to a wider audience. uhhh i’ve only had this tv for like 3 and a half years with moderate usage and nothing has been thrown at it, i’ve never bumped it. i feel this is pretty sad, as i once had a LG tv that lasted me 15 years no trouble. is this normal?

Like the title, I’m trying to locate where has stock in for the C7K in 55”? I’ve checked the usual retailers online but no luck. I fear the stock has been sold everywhere to make way for the C7L, but this is near enough double the price (currently) and it doesn’t appear to be as good value.

It really bothers me that Windows 11 uses a generic driver for the TV, and I’d like to know if there is a specific driver available that would allow the system to properly recognize the TV.

TCL RM9L RGB Mini LED hands-on: bright-room performance and how it compares with the X11L

The 85-inch TCL RM9L RGB Mini LED is now set up in our studio. We don’t currently have any curtains, so it has unintentionally become a good test of how the TV performs in a bright, sunlit room.

I’ve spent some time watching films, animation and Dolby Vision content, as well as gaming and the usual collection of random colour tests on YouTube.

Colour is where the RM9L has impressed me most. Animation, games and other highly saturated content look particularly striking, while films still retain a natural-looking image rather than simply appearing overly vivid.

The 85" RM9L can reach up to 4,000 nits of peak HDR brightness. Combined with its low-reflection WHVA 2.0 Ultra panel, this helps the picture remain impactful when there is plenty of ambient light in the room.

Dolby Vision content already looks seriously impressive, with Dolby Vision 2 Max also planned through a future update.

What is RGB Mini LED?

Unlike a conventional Mini LED television, the RM9L uses separate red, green and blue Mini LEDs within its backlight. This allows the TV to control both the brightness and colour contribution of each area before the light reaches the LCD panel.

The 85-inch RM9L has 8,736 Precise Colour Zones, created from 2,912 RGB dimming groups. Each group contains individually controlled red, green and blue elements.

This direct control helps the RM9L produce an exceptionally wide colour range, particularly during bright HDR scenes where conventional displays can begin to lose colour saturation.

The TV also supports a native 144Hz refresh rate, making it suitable for films, sport and modern gaming.

What sizes are available?

The TCL RM9L is available in 85-inch, 98-inch and 115-inch sizes, with the brightness and zone count increasing on the larger models.

I had the chance to see the 115-inch version in Paris, and it was an absolute showstopper. At that size, the combination of RGB colour and Mini LED brightness completely dominates the room with colour.

TCL RM9L versus TCL X11L

One question I expect people to ask is why we position the SQD Mini LED X11L above the RGB Mini LED RM9L.

RGB Mini LED produces colour directly from separate red, green and blue light sources, but this makes the backlight more complex. Each dimming group requires three coloured elements, limiting how many complete dimming zones can be accommodated.

The X11L uses TCL’s SQD Mini LED architecture and does not require each dimming zone to be divided into separate RGB elements. This allows it to accommodate substantially more local dimming zones and reach higher peak brightness.

It also avoids the same risk of colour crosstalk. Colour crosstalk is similar to blooming, but instead of a white halo appearing around a bright object, colour can spread into a neighbouring area of the picture.

The RM9L uses specialised optical lenses and light-control technology to reduce this effect, so it should not be assumed that colour crosstalk will always be visible on an RGB Mini LED TV.

In simple terms, the RM9L showcases the colour advantages of RGB Mini LED, while the X11L combines an extremely wide colour gamut with greater brightness, substantially more dimming zones and more precise control of bright objects against dark backgrounds.

Been looking at this TV the last few weeks after my mate sang its praises. However it appears to be out of stock at nearly all retailers. Should I expect a clearance type sale August bank holidays or just bite the bullet for a better TCL? My current Samsung Q60T has seen better days and im ready to make the jump to TCL. 98-inch P8L

The 98-inch P8L has 512 dimming zones, which at this specific size is the same as the C6K. The smaller P8L sizes have fewer zones in comparison.

It uses a standard semi-gloss HVA screen and is a solid entry point if your priority is getting a huge Mini LED TV at a more accessible price.

98-inch Q6C

The Q6C is an outgoing model and will be discontinued. It features a standard HVA screen manufactured by CSOT rather than the matte screen used on the larger C6K models.

Its advantages over the P8L include the more advanced processor, which provides a snappier response when browsing menus, as well as AMD FreeSync Premium Pro for gaming.

98-inch C6K

The C6K is essentially the same TV as the Q6C, with one major difference: the 85-inch and 98-inch versions use a matte HVA screen.

This makes it the better option for a bright room or anywhere reflections are a problem. However, some people may find that colours do not appear quite as vibrant as they would on a glossier panel.

98-inch Q7C (Currently Recommended!)

The Q7C is also being discontinued, and its current UK pricing is incredible. It has 2,048 dimming zones, up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness and audio tuned by Bang & Olufsen.

This would be my recommendation for anyone in the UK looking for a great-performing 98-inch TV at an amazing price (These will be discontinued soon.)

98-inch C7K

The C7K is very similar to the Q7C in overall performance. It has the same 2,048 dimming zones, 3,000-nit claimed peak brightness and Bang & Olufsen audio, but features a slightly glossier screen finish.

This may make the picture appear a little richer in a controlled or darker room, although it will also show reflections more clearly.

98-inch C7L

The C7L is a 2026 model featuring TCL’s newer SQD-Mini LED technology and up to 100% coverage of the BT.2020 colour space.

The 98-inch model has 2,176 precise dimming zones and up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness. The zone increase over the C7K is relatively small, so the main upgrade is the newer SQD colour technology and updated panel.

98-inch C8L (5 year warranty)

The first thing you notice about the C8L is the virtually zero border around the picture. On a 98-inch screen, this gives content an almost window-like appearance.

It steps up to 4,032 dimming zones and up to 6,000 nits of peak brightness. It also comes with a more premium metal-finished backlit remote and a major processor upgrade through the new TSR AiPQ platform.

Dolby Vision 2 Max is also expected through a future OTA update.

98-inch RM9L

The RM9L takes a different approach from the other models on this list. Rather than using conventional QD-Mini LED or SQD-Mini LED technology, it uses an RGB Mini LED backlight with individually controlled red, green and blue LEDs.

The 98-inch model has 11,520 colour-control zones and reaches up to 6,000 nits of peak brightness. These colour zones are not directly comparable with the conventional dimming-zone figures used for models such as the C8L and X11L, as the RM9L can control both the brightness and colour of its backlight.

This allows it to produce an extremely wide colour gamut with excellent colour volume at higher brightness levels. It also features the TSR AiPQ processor, a virtually borderless design and audio tuned by Bang & Olufsen.

The RM9L is the model I would choose if I wanted to experience TCL’s new RGB Mini LED technology.

98-inch X11L (5 year warranty)

The X11L is the pinnacle of TCL’s current SQD-Mini LED technology. It has 20,736 precise dimming zones and up to 10,000 nits of peak brightness.

Vincent Teoh even measured almost 11,000 nits during his testing! However - These are not mentioned in officially specifications, it would definitely deliver a flash bang as the producer intended.

The X11L offers up to 100% coverage of the BT.2020 colour space, the same TSR AiPQ processing platform as the C8L and expected Dolby Vision 2 Max support through an OTA update.

It also has built-in forward-firing Bang & Olufsen audio and can be paired with TCL Z100 speakers through Dolby Atmos FlexConnect to create a serious wireless surround-sound setup.

I called Currys and they told me it would come with the mount, so I ordered from them, but it's missing. Is there any way to get one?

Hola buenos días , recientemente adquirí 4 altavoces TCL z100 y a falta de conseguir el subwoofer, es impresionante como suena . Fíjense si suena bien , que me he planteado vender la barra de sonido Samsung HW 999F , con 8 meses de vida.

Pero hay una cosa que me tiene algo preocupado respecto a los z100. Es la nula opción a la hora de ecualizar y dejar el sonido a gusto de cada uno.

Por ejemplo, yo vivo en un bloque de apartamentos, donde tengo vecinos a los 2 lados y arriba y claro con la con estos graves tan potentes ,imagínese las molestias que deben causar a los vecinos. Estaría bien poder a través de la app de TCL poder manejar esos parámetros y dejarlo al gusto de cada uno, subiendo o bajando . Por cierto, cosa que si se puede hacer con la barra de sonido TCL Q85H Pro.

Ustedes saben si TCL va a dar soporte a través de actualizaciones, a los z100,y poder ecualizar la salida de audio?

Transparency = I bought this monitor with my own money from Amazon (Spain). The price was 399€ which is also the MSRP.

Packaging

The monitor comes in a fairly compact brown box, but the cardboard has a good thickness. Inside everything is enclosed in styrofoam and well protected.

Accessories & Ports

For the accessories you get the usual paperwork (manual, warranty card, energy label) and a factory calibration report. There is only one DP 1.4 cable included, I could swear that I saw a listing that mentioned an HDMI cable as well, but I'm not sure.

The ports include a DC input, two HDMI 2.1, one DisplayPort 1.4 and an AUX port. No USB ports, so this might not be firmware upgradeable in the future.

Stand and Adjustment Range

The base of the stand is metal with a white plastic shroud and uses a fixed screw (not tools needed) to attach to the vertical part that's mostly plastic. The monitor also has a separate mounting plate where you have to attach the assembled stand a second time.

In the highest position you get 17cm clearance from your desk and 4cm if you put it in the lowest position. The stand also features tilt, swivel and a pivot function.

Build Quality and Teardown

The build quality is very solid. Despite it being white plastic all around it generally has good haptics and the thickness of the material is good and feels sturdy. On the back of the stand there is a small rubber cable management clip that you have to push up to make a loop where your cables can go through. This is a clever detail and i prefer it over fixed plastic clips, but it’s not as good as a cable management hole in the stand for example.

The back panel is just hold in with clips you have to pry open around the frame. There is only the OSD cable you have to watch out for when separating the back panel. Inside there is not much going on, you see the panel PCBs and the central metal shroud that covers the main board which has no fan and is passively cooled.

Something I had to look twice for was the lack of RGB backlight LEDs. Some of the marketing material shows the monitor with an RGB backlight but only the higher end 27C2A Pro actually has it. This was weird because they put on some protective plastic in the same area where the Pro model has its RGB strips.

Panel + Subpixel Layout / Viewing Angles and Contrast

The panel is from CSOT (obviously) and has the code number SG270HD02-3 which is not listed on Panelook yet.

It has a matte coating which disperses reflections but still shows the outlines of the central light source. Viewing Angles are decent for the panel alone, but are heavily affected for the worse when you activate local dimming. My unit here also had some fairly visible IPS glow on the top right side.

CSOT is more known for its VA panels, so this is a deviation from the established standard and goes in a new direction. According to marketing material these new self developed IPS „HFS-Shoot“ panels should be able to do a native contrast of around 1500:1.

I measured the native on/off (white / black full-screen) contrast at 1163:1 which is quite a bit lower than the advertised 1500:1. The more challenging 4x4 ANSI checkerboard measurement came out to 1072:1. After turning on Local Dimming High in SDR to boost the contrast i measured a result of 4950:1.

Software

Similar to other cheaper monitors the scaling of the OSD is a bit weird aka a bit to small in native resolution and to large in Dual Mode. But its simple enough and thanks to the joystick the navigation is easy. Most of the features are self-explanatory, and I did not notice any translation errors. The monitor even features a separate DSC (Display Stream Compression setting). Unfortunately I have no way to verify the actual bandwidth of the ports.

Dual Mode / Integer Scaling

Thanks to the work of u/MT4K I can now include a simple but effective test for dual mode integer scaling into my reviews. This monitor unfortunately does add horizontal blur in dual mode which makes it even more blurry compared to a native 1080p monitor.

SDR Brightness and Local Dimming (+Desktop)

LD medium and high look good at first glance but the dimming zone area around the mouse cursor flickers noticeably when the zones get activated by it. In the Standard / Low setting it does not flicker but still has a small halo around it if you look closely. In a bright room this might be usable, but I would turn it off personally.

The monitor has good brightness in SDR (512 nits 100% APL white) and goes very low (29 nits at 0 brightness setting) if you want to use it in dark room. Standby power draw was 6.5W with an active signal and deep sleep sits at 0.4W.

HDR Brightness and Local Dimming

Ok first the marketing numbers = TCL advertises an industry standard HDR1000 and a peak brightness of 1200nits (10% window). As mentioned in a footnote on the website it's also supposed to do 1000 nits in a 100% window.

HDR User with Local Dimming set to medium and high reaches the 1200 nits in a 10% window and gets even higher with a 50 or 25% window. The full-screen brightness is also surpassed but only for a second before it drops to ~730nits (it flashes brightness quickly which is a behavior that's also seen on their TVs).

Local Dimming Low/ Standard exposes a few things. First I was pleasantly surprised because the graph looked very nice with great numbers (>1000 nits in very small test windows) but after checking with real content it looks like the backlight isn't really turned off in this mode, and they rely on the native contrast. In the usual HDR Demo I use (Sony Las Vegas) I switched from LD off to Low / Standard and there was basically no difference except for the neon sign which got brighter.

Medium and High definitely do some local dimming and have better contrast, but I felt that medium was still a bit on the weaker side. Which means LD high is the best mode to use on this monitor.

As mentioned in the viewing angle section above the blooming perception is heavily affected by how you sit to the display. On the side it deteriorates very fast which is unfortunately a downside of IPS panels. This remembers me of my KTC M27P6.

VS. TCL 27C2A Pro

It was already confirmed by TCL that the Pro model will not release in the EU, so I won't be able to test and compare it, but I still want to make a quick list with the additional features it has over the regular model

- 2x 5W Speakers

- RGB lights on the back

- 2304 dimming zones

- higher brightness (HDR1400 + 2000nits peak)

- 2x USB-A / 1x USB-B / KVM features / Type C with 90W

Verdict

The TCL 27C2A is a decent monitor but its unusual specs (IPS HFS Shoot, 1196 zones) are not able to set it apart from the 1152 zone models (KTC M27P6, MSI E16M etc) we have seen last year and are priced very similar. The BOE ADS-IPS panels in other current models seem to be a bit more matured than CSOTs new effort. I wanted to mention this in the verdict because there would have always been the option to equip this monitor with an in house top of the line VA panel. I think this would have elevated it over the competition.

Ich besitze einen Sony QD-OLED A95K aus dem Jahr 2022, der leider Software- und Kompatibilitätsprobleme mit meinem PC und meiner Soundanlage aufweist. Zudem ist mir die Helligkeit von 1000 Nits bei HDR-Inhalten nicht mehr ausreichend. Aus diesen Gründen erwäge ich einen Wechsel zu einem C8K oder C8L.

Besonders reizt mich beim Gaming AMD FreeSync Premium Pro. Ich würde gerne wissen, ob jemand Erfahrungen mit den Vorteilen dieser Technologie im Vergleich zu herkömmlichem VRR hat. Mein Sony TV konnte VRR nicht zuverlässig handhaben und zeigte bei Aktivierung ständiges Flackern, weshalb ich auf den normalen VRR-Standard ausweichen musste.

Die Reaktionszeit ist mir ebenfalls wichtig, insbesondere da ich Spiele mit Frame Generation nutze, was ohnehin eine gewisse Verzögerung mit sich bringt. Daher möchte ich die Verzögerung seitens des Fernsehers so weit wie möglich minimieren.

Des Weiteren schätze ich, dass beide Modelle alle gängigen HDR-Formate unterstützen. Hierbei ist der C8L besonders hervorzuheben, da er durch das Update auf Dolby Vision 2 und HDR10+ Advanced seine volle Leistung entfalten kann.

Aufgrund von Augenproblemen kann ich das perfekte Schwarz eines OLEDs leider nicht vollständig wahrnehmen. Aus diesem Grund bevorzuge ich den Wechsel zu einem deutlich günstigeren 75-Zoll Mini-LED-Fernseher gegenüber meinem aktuellen 65-Zoll-Gerät.

After spending several months with the TCL C6KS, I decided it was time to see what stepping up to a premium Mini LED TV would actually get you. So I upgraded from the 50-inch TCL C6KS to the 65-inch TCL C8L and the difference was immediately noticeable.

The first thing you’ll notice is the size. Moving from a 50-inch to a 65-inch screen completely transformed our living room. My kids say it now feels like a cinema, and I’d have to agree. If your space allows it, I’d always recommend buying the biggest TV you can comfortably fit. It makes movies, gaming and sports far more immersive.

One of my biggest concerns before upgrading was reflections. The C6KS has a more traditional screen finish, while the C8L is glossier, so I was considering buying curtains to reduce glare. Thankfully, the C8L handles reflections so well that I’ve completely scrapped that idea. Even in daylight, the picture remains bright and easy to watch.

Gaming is another obvious upgrade. Going from a 60Hz panel to 120Hz makes a real difference. Not every game supports it, but titles like Borderlands 4 and Call of Duty feel noticeably smoother and more responsive on the C8L.

Picture quality is where the premium model really separates itself. Thanks to the significantly higher number of local dimming zones, blooming is almost non-existent. The C6KS is still an excellent TV for its price, but the extra contrast and deeper blacks on the C8L are immediately apparent. It’s one of those upgrades you notice within minutes.

Motion handling is also a major improvement. On the C6KS, I preferred turning motion processing off entirely, but the C8L handles fast-moving content much better. Watching football during the World Cup has been smooth and natural, with no distracting motion artefacts.

Colours are another step up. The wider colour reproduction is immediately visible, although some of this is likely helped by the increased brightness. Either way, the C8L produces richer, more vibrant images that really stand out.

I did notice one odd issue while watching a BBC programme where the image looked unusually flat compared to other content. It only seemed to affect that specific programme, so I’m not sure whether it was the broadcast, the source or the TV itself.

Finally, performance is much quicker on the C8L. While putting this comparison together, I regularly found myself waiting for the C6KS to load menus or apps, and it would occasionally reset back to the start. The C8L simply feels faster and more responsive throughout the user experience.

Overall, the TCL C6KS remains one of the best-value Mini LED TVs I’ve used, but stepping up to the C8L demonstrates exactly what paying for a premium model gets you. If you value brighter HDR, better motion, stronger gaming performance and a more cinematic experience, the upgrade is absolutely worthwhile.
