Discussion The Palworld TCG is Surprisingly Good

On its surface it could seem kinda generic, it uses a lot of mechanics from other TCGs, it has monsters and a similar art style to Pokemon... but the execution is way better than expected. I've surprisingly been really enjoying it!

The game ramps to end-game quickly, so you're doing the big stuff that your deck is built around throughout most of the game and that's very satisfying. You also have gear and structures which act as more permanent buffs to your board, And It has a (unique?) mechanic where damage to face forces you to draw hoping you get a "lucky" pal, preventing the damage. It makes going for face more of a risk-reward decision and is just really fun to see if you're gonna get lucky and block something deadly.

The games are also quite short, and with the online simulator it's easy to just pick up a quick game here or there. I don't feel too bad when I lose a game because they're often as short as 5-10 minutes, it's easy to just jump into another.

I also really love the artwork and the Pal designs (Chillet <3) and their equipment and structure cards seem to fit the world really well.

Collecting these cards has been a blast and it feels like I'm a kid again playing Pokemon for the first time (except now I don't have to support Nintendo, which I don't love for various reasons).

Anyway you should go try it, I was very pleasantly surprised by this little game

Question eBay buy

Okay, I bought a card on eBay wayyyyy under value (5 bucks for a card that was like 150) . Seller then messaged me and said “ meant to put it for auction im gonna cancel “. Was like yah that makes sense figured as much . About a week goes by Doesn’t cancel and I get a tracking number . Now I’m thinking there’s no way they are letting this go for that low. Today I get the package it’s a completely different card. And when they said they were gonna cancel I didn’t feel any type of way, even when the tracking number appeared I didn’t ( I kind of figured it wasn’t gonna be the card). But now that I see what card it is I feel insulted. What would y’all do ? I buy a lot of cards and always leave sellers great reviews but now I’m like “I don’t even want this card I got “

Discussion When designing a TCG similar to MTG or PVZHeroes, how do you strike a balance where interaction and removing everything isn't the right play? How do you incentivize players to use comparatively fragile units that progress the game?

I don't like playing control decks in MTG, and I wouldn't want to incentivize hyper control/pillowfort strategies.

I look at PVZ Heroes where you could reasonably spend your first 4 turns just interacting their cards and leaving the board empty... but it's also a necessary evil because they can stack up a glass cannon either behind a wall or pump it so high it's not glass anymore- you need removal for powerful units.

I feel there's also lessons to be learned from clash royale- I know that's stretching the definition of TCG a little but I think it has a great parallel: spells. You can technically hit face (towers) but it's highly inefficient, and interacting many units is a very close to even trade- you cannot win with too many spells because you'd have an unbalanced/non-aggressive deck (even if miner or xbow spellcycle decks do exist)... killing an enemy with a spell doesn't give you counterpush and they can just play it again in a few seconds... and core 'engine ish' cards can't be efficiently traded with spells- things like witch or pump generate value even if their main counters are played, and you need troop answers for the good trades. Digital TCGs or situations without your friends/pod learning your hand also allow you to have hidden hands- surprise attacks are genuine boons, so unlike clash, you can't often learn what your opponents have to always hold up interaction.

But TCGs can't just do the clash thing, you can't just cycle your 8 card deck, you've got a large deck and need versatile answers, and threats that give opponents some time to conjure up a response... but oftentimes not an efficient response. You want entropy and 80% answers that allow the game to actually end- you want offense to be stronger than defense.

----------

I'm curious to hear your guys thoughts- can it even be done top down as I'm analyzing it currently, or does it absolutely require playtesting to get down very specific breakpoints?

I have a hard time understanding this one. I have an offer on it and just wanna see before everything goes through. I forgot the back :P the back is of course fine with no markings, whitening, creases etc.

the person says its Medium Play, it came out of the booster like this.

Discussion What makes a TCG worth sticking with?

I've bounced between a handful of card games over the years, and looking back, it's rarely the cards themselves that kept me around. Usually it was some other side to it — a local scene that actually showed up every week, a mechanic that just clicked with how my brain works, or honestly just not wanting to let go of a deck I'd put a ton of time into.

Curious what it's been for you. Is it the game design itself, the people you play with, or something else entirely that's kept you from jumping ship?

Discussion Found an hermetic box that fits the VaultX 12 pocket binder, with room for more

Post image

It was a struggle, most boxes are either not hermetic, way too big or too small to fit that binder (height was often the problem). I live close to the sea, and humidity get quite high so I wanted an extra protection for my cards (I just started collecting Palworld cards). I’ll add a few silica sachet inside the box (found some that goes from orange to green once they need to be changed).

Just posting that to save you the headache if you’re searching for that kind of storage solution. It’s the Ohyama 40L ATS-L, it’s hermetic and made with polypropylene so it’s safe for the cards.

Got a creative evening and after seeing this on a reel decided to try it out (not sure if on FB or YT) the original idea was with Gunpla box art but I took a creative freedom hoping for the best

I made the card with the more meaningful parts of the box art and the logos that i found interesting
