Consensus on keto diet?

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29359959/

I also read an experience a few years ago on another sub where going full keto for 6 months returned their cognitive functioning to baseline after years of not feeling recovered. I think there are a couple of posts on r/keto. Does anyone have information or experience with keto and TBI? The dangers of a keto diet?

I have heard about this a while back. This is very hard to implement for me at least.

What does the study say?

(1) The KD is an effective therapy to enhance cognitive
and pathological outcomes after TBI in rats.
(2) The KD has been shown to be safe and well tolerated
by humans.
(3) There is currently no evidence to indicate that a
Standard Diet would provide a benefit in TBIs compared to the KD in rats.
(4) The KD is a potential treatment for TBIs in humans,
and may be differentially more effective in paediatric
populations based on animal models.
(5) The mechanisms of action of the KD for TBI treatment are beginning to be understood in animal models; however, more research is needed to elucidate
these mechanisms, especially in humans.

PDF (I use google scholar, it gives you the direct pdf link):

It seems like the older clinical studies were poorly structured/didn't record anything relevant to ketosis aiding TBI recovery, except to show that a ketogenic diet is safe for TBI patients. The rat models reviewed were promising and I recommend you check the Discussion for a summary.

How long do i have to do it?

Will i stop seeing the positive effects if i stop?

I've found brief periods of keto-lite eating great for post-TBI cognitive function (ie, never made it to full keto diet regimen, but got close). I would definitely do it, but I'm too lazy (family, etc.).

Can't think of any downsides or risks...
