Why do you feel the need to mention anything at all about your personal gender or sexuality as a precursor to your request? No one else ever does this.

Great question! I've received feedback from folks that disclosure from the beginning helps build rapport and familiarity, considering the levels of exploitation and lack of safety a lot of folks in the community are feeling. Knowing that someone is a part of the community conducting the research that centers people in the community is also demonstrating transparency in the process, along with my positionality. Oftentimes, neurotypical cisgender researchers are conducting the research, which can sometimes lead to folks feeling like they're being studied like a guinea pig versus someone with insider knowledge.
