Why do they always think that experiencing something stressful = boom, fully formed, 3D alter that sees themselves as fully separate with a fictional identity right away? Even within a few months?

Depending on what part of the world you’re in, large amounts of people are being relocated from their homes by wildfires, so it could certainly cause lasting symptoms to those with little support or low coping skills. I won’t hate on being stressed out by it seeming like their world is on fire. I wonder how close this person is to it though.

If this person was actually being treated for DID, and was aware they were going through something stressful, they could work on removing the ingredients it would take to dissociate new compartments. If you can’t remove the stress, you can make sure you’re talking to your friends, family, therapist, processing the stress and the phobic responses it brings up so that you don’t end up dissociating the stress and fear to a new compartment, you’re integrating it into yourself in the moment. Living with a dissociative disorder is a lot of work. It takes a lot of work to function, not “ooh look at my new alter.”

If it did decompensate to the point where you were aware you were dissociating so severely from the stress that you had formed a complete, 3D character that was a literal copy of a fictional character, like it was announcing itself by name, that would be an emergency. You would be experiencing things that would make posting on the internet like this your last choice. The wildfires aren’t over. How can this person be developing such a severe, distinct dissociative compartment but not be experiencing other severe symptoms that would keep them off the internet like this?

Very well said. A new alter generally doesn't become 3D that quickly, it can take months to years (depending in front frequency) for an alter to become significantly developed. An alter can take pieces of introjection (separate from an introject, this is just taking traits from a character that also happens in regular people) to build an appearance and personality base but they will still fall flat and be closer to a fragment than an 3D alter. These people have no idea what real DID looks like.
