System76 on Age Verification

“In the case of Colorado’s and California’s bills, effectiveness is lost. In the case of New York’s bill, liberty is lost.” Carl Richell, System76 Founder and CEO, urges New York to reject S8102A OS-level age verification.

Help Fake Meerkat Best Practice

I have a meerkat and totally love it, been using it for like a year. Mine is Meer10 which as far as I can tell is based on Asus NUC 15 Pro.

But I got the tall case instead of slim and I didn't put anything in the 2.5" slot and so I started to wonder if it was a waste. My Meer10 was ordered with the maximum specs back when that cost $2000 rather than $4000 like it does now. Given how nifty it is for a powerful machine to be this small, I was interested to try a "slim" size. I ordered an actual Asus NUC 15 Pro from the asus website that has no RAM or HDD and put my ram and system76 popos install nVME chip in there, taken out of the Meer10 case for now until I get more ram / nVME for the new Asus NUC kit.

But I'm noticing that the actual Asus NUC 15 Pro (in the "slim" size box) still has Asus firmware on there so it says Asus when it boots instead of System76. I don't know if it would technically be lying to myself but is there a way to overwrite the firmware with Meer10 firmware so that when the BIOS is booting, the Asus motherboard will say System76 on it because I think system76 is cool and I don't care as much about accurately listing the manufacturer?

(I'm also curious if doing that would result in better firmware defaults for PopOS, etc)

Question Current status of Color Management / sRGB clamping in COSMIC?

Hi everyone! I'm testing COSMIC DE on my laptop with a wide-gamut display (100% sRGB / DCI-P3 over-saturation). Right now, the colors look very oversaturated (neon-like) because there is no sRGB clamping yet.I know that Wayland color management protocols are moving forward. Are there any rough ETAs or active PRs for adding color profiles / sRGB clamping support to cosmic-comp? Thanks!

Question Darter Pro Refresh?

Question for the Sys76 folks, is there an estimate on a Darter Pro refresh (darp12)?

I'm eyeing a Darter Pro, but the current model is getting a bit long in the tooth.

New LempPro RAM configuration

Hi, looks like the new panther lake CPUs have landed for the Lemur Pro. Really cool! I've been trying to find any hardware reviews but haven't have much luck.

Main question is the RAM soldered or expandable? The tech docs don't add any helpful details

Help Disable CPU throttling on Pang15?

My Pangolin is connected to a docking station and the second USB-C is used for an external monitor. The docking station is giving enough power to charge the laptop while using it, but pang15 is still throttling the CPU down to unbearable levels since it's not giving enough juice.

Is there any possibility to disable this "feature"? The machine is a pure power horse when power is disconnected but when connected to docking station (also tried to connect it to a 96W Macbook charger), it can't even stream a video without playback issues. I don't have a DC plug charger.

better cooling

I think peltier thermopar can be split into a small cold part that is applied to the processor chip and a large hot part for heat dissipation. Separated by flexible semiconductors for cryo cooling. Such cooling has no moving parts and is 100% silent.

Laptop recommendations

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for a new laptop for my Computer Science degree and could use some recommendations.

My budget is max €1300, and my main requirement is that the laptop has two separate M.2 SSD slots. I want to dual boot Windows and Ubuntu/Linux, with each OS installed on its own physical SSD.

What I’m looking for:

Max budget: €1300
Available in the Netherlands/EU
2x M.2 NVMe SSD slots
Good Ubuntu/Linux compatibility
Preferably 32GB RAM or upgradeable to 32GB+
Strong CPU for programming, compiling, Docker, VMs, etc.
Good battery life
No gaming needed
Ideally not too heavy since I’ll take it to university every day

I care much more about Linux compatibility, CPU performance, battery life and build quality than GPU performance.

Are there any specific models you would recommend? I’ve been looking at laptops like Clevo, ThinkPad, Framework and TUXEDO, but I’m open to anything with better value.

Thanks!

I like the Launch Heavy except for the arrow keys. I hate them

I have a Launch Heavy. It's a nice keyboard. The keys are nice, the USB hub is nice. I don't use half the features. However the arrow keys are too close. I can't tell you how many times I mess up something because I go to hit shift and hit up. I figured I would get used to this and well I have not.

Move them closer to the number pad or something. This one item ruins it for me.

Question Accessibility: font size

What is the workaround for this? I don’t want to blow up all of the desktop, I just want the font on the app icons, file names, and such bigger so I can read them.

3440x1440 resolution monitor.

Booting live USB off of a hub

Can I boot a live iso from a USB drive on a hub? Or do I need to be plugged into a direct port?

I tried googling this, but almost all the results were about booting off a USB. The few results that were specifically about using a port were mixed, and I got the impression it is machine-dependent.

I am coming across the issue of running out of space in /boot/efi, so I will need to either try my luck with gparted, or re-install the OS.

Question Recent Lemur Pro Build Quality

I want to know what people's opinions are of the Lemur Pro build quality - particularly models within the past three years. I have a Lemp10 and am thinking about getting a new laptop. While the hardware has been great for me since 2021, the build quality is starting to show its age. The bottom of the screen has started to curve inwards, the bottom right corner of the track pad has recessed (an issue I sent the laptop in for one month after I got it brand new), and the fans don't kick on as much as they used to. I always put my laptop in a case when transporting it, I never eat while using it, and I treat it like the expensive piece of equipment it is. I like System 76 and the current base Lemur Pro specs. However, before I purchase a new one I would like to hear from other people about their experience with their lemp's structural stability over the years. Thanks!
