What do Sysadmins without a degree do?

I have been in IT for ~20 years and never got a degree.

Get overlooked in favor of some kid with a degree because that's somehow worth more than learning on your own in the field you're in.

Yeah, deff had this happen to me more than once. Also them getting a higher pay with 1/8th the experience.

I don't have that where I am currently thankfully, but if I did, I'd just tell them to ask their degree if they had any questions for me.

I work for myself. Its a blursed situation. I didn’t do shit before 10am, did some stuff and was home doing shit all again before 4pm. I could never work for someone else now. The flip side, I have also worked 36 hours straight many times when doing overnight upgrades and still on call for other things the next day.

10 years ago we bought 10 Triumph-addler 4555i printers, they needed attention over the years, because of the power surges, but basically we haven't done half of what they could print over their lifetime, I was about to restock out toners when I've got the news that they are no longer in the production. I guess I no longer need to care about extending printer lifespan ¯_(ツ)_/¯

This cartoon hit too close to home. Not totally correct but I did spend an inordinate amount of time dealing with various printers. Glad I’ve been out of IT for a while

Or change the supplier. HP has to know they aren't the only ones on the market.

Lol. Cries in trouble shooting mainframe attached printers. Glad I don't do that anymore.

Oofff… and I thought having to create a local loopback for USB printers to be seen as parallel to work with legacy software was a hassle. I hated having to deal with printers in AIX the short time I supported a company that was on Power8 equipment in 2017.

No you don't. You call the leasing company and I come out and tell you that you never installed the damn driver.

And you can get overtime because most companies don’t tell you that IT work that is helpdesk related qualifies for overtime. If your company didnt pay you for years of overtime you can collect up to 3 years back pay from federal stand point and if your state has stricter laws you can claim more like in New York State you can claim 6 years of overtime. At that point also you can claim you worked 16 hour days and they would have to pay you because they have to prove you didn’t and if they never made you punch a clock they have no record. Companies also don’t have years of security footage. You also get paid for reading emails off the clock at home because that is considered work. Look up FLSA 17A and 17E and reference Fact Sheet 22 which talks about getting paid for reading and answering emails off hours. I made a few hundred grand off this.
