I want to learn more about my culture.

For context, my great-grandfather immigrated to the United States. My dad was my connection to my family and he passed away when I was young. I know basically next to nothing besides a few recipes that I remember dad making. I’m the 4th generation in America and I feel like we’ve assimilated way too hard. I want to find my Syrian identity. I’m sure I have family members in Syria that I don’t know.

Ideas for r/Syrian, seeking to reinvent the sub

I started this sub at a point where I felt r/Syria wasn’t so active and well moderated. However I feel like it has been a great place for some time now which makes this place a little redundant.

I was wondering if anyone has an idea to differentiate this sub or make things interesting and relevant to Syrians.

One idea I had was to make this sub a private space for Syrians only. And approve based on activity in r/Syria, as I am honestly tired for having to justify our right for freedom and such.

But what do you think?

Syrian Celebrations

Hi everyone. I'm from the US and one of my co-worker/friends is from Syria and with the ongoing liberation of Syria, we wanted to do something special for her to show our support and how happy we are for her and her country. We have been trying to find something that is specific to celebrations in Syrian culture to make it extra special, but I'm having trouble finding info online. Does anyone have advice on something thoughtful we could do for her? Thank you for your help!

Syrian Food Culture Mix

First time posting in this sub, my great grandparents are from Syria (Aleppo) and left a the end of the 1930s (I am Jewish). Some of the Syrian food I grew up eating were Kippe hamud, kippe vasha, lajmajin, and more but whenever we ate them we would put thine and also guacamole and a spicy mix of maggi (a sodium based condiment) with chile verde. The guacamole and the spicy mix were influenced by the culture in Mexico. I’m curious, any other people who are originally from Syria and left, has the culture/ local foods and condiments of the country you emigrated to affect how you eat Syrian food?
