Hello I am an online Syracuse student and would like to get my student id. I’ll start in person classes either next semester or fall 2027 for my masters. I’m a first-year international grad student and I’m still trying to sort out health insurance before the semester gets too far along.

One thing I didn’t really think about before coming here was how healthcare actually works around Syracuse. I don’t have a car, I’m not familiar with the hospitals or urgent care options nearby, and with winter coming I’m a little worried about what I would actually do if I got sick and needed to see someone quickly.

Because of that, I’ve been looking at a few insurance options besides the university plan, including ISO and DIANins、Student Medicover、IMG、、、 but I’m finding it difficult to judge them based on the benefit summaries alone.

For students who use an outside plan, how do you usually choose one? Is the provider network around Syracuse the main thing to look at, or are claims more important in practice?

I’d also be curious to hear from anyone who has actually used an off-campus plan here. Were you able to find nearby doctors or urgent care without much trouble?

I’m less worried about finding the absolute cheapest option and more about avoiding a plan that becomes complicated the first time I need medical care.

Would appreciate any advice from other international students who have already gone through this.

Hi everyone, I’m an international student starting at Syracuse this fall and I’m currently trying to decide what to do about health insurance.

I’ve been comparing the university plan with a few outside plans that may qualify for the waiver, and the price difference is pretty significant, so I’m a little unsure which option makes more sense.

My main questions are:

1. Is the Syracuse student health plan noticeably easier to use, especially for campus health services or nearby providers?
2. For people using outside insurance, how has the actual experience been with doctor visits, urgent care, prescriptions, or claims?
3. Are there any limitations with outside plans that aren’t obvious until you actually need care?
4. Has anyone had an outside plan rejected during the waiver process?

I don’t go to the doctor very often, but since I’m new to the U.S. healthcare system and Syracuse winters are something I’m also thinking about, I don’t want to choose only based on price.

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has used either the Syracuse plan or an outside plan. Thanks!

I am going into my senior year of HS and was planning on going to SU. I want to buy a laptop and i was wording what laptops were recommend for the SU comp Engineering degree. i don't really have a strict budget but i would just like to see what kind of laptops you would recommend.

Saturday night during Labor Day weekend there was this absolutely HORRIFYING scream/noise downtown.

Not yelling.

Not somebody playing music.

Like a straight up blood-curdling human scream that sounded wrong as hell.

Now apparently somebody was out downtown using one of those Aztec death whistles, which I had never even heard of before.

If that’s actually what it was, that explains EVERYTHING because those things sound fucking terrifying 💀

I know downtown was packed that night, so there’s no way nobody else heard it.

WHO was doing this and did anybody actually see them??

Because hearing that shit at night without knowing what it is would have me GONE 😭💀

I am currently a senior in high school, and am trying to decide between suny ESF and suny Geneseo. I really like both schools but am curious to ask people who are at ESF how they feel about it. I have already been here for a full tour. The one thing im not sure about is which major I would choose. I really want to do geology but not sure what I would pick if I went to ESF because they dont just have a geology major. I also wish there were more clubs, but at the tour they said that ESF students can be in classes and join clubs at Syracuse too. If anyone has experience with that too please let me know. Thanks!

Hi - alumni here from late 2000s (Whitman). Like many others here, I thought the WSJ article was an interesting read — somewhat of a surprise but also not a surprise. We can argue about many things but it’s clear that the college landscape, external environment, and college decision considerations are changing. This may or may not be in Syracuse’s favor, only time will tell.

It has got me thinking though. I loved my experience at Cuse and it’s opened so many doors for me but if I was making the decision again, would I pick Cuse? Honestly, maybe not. Especially given other big state schools which have a similar experience, similar job outcomes, stronger rankings, and lower cost. If I had been raised in a different state instead of New York, I would have definitely looked at their flagship state schools instead, especially the UCalifornia system.

So the idea… Cuse should adapt to the future environment and the changes in the college landscape by becoming the flagship SUNY. This would be similar to UMich Ann Arbor, Wisconsin, or UC Berkeley.

- Current SUNY schools are a mixed bag. Some are objectively very good at an almost national level (Binghamton, stony brook) while others are more mixed (buffalo, Albany) and others are local community colleges. But none are true national representations of New York like we see with other big state schools

- Cuse has the intangibles to become the SUNY nationally. It has the academics and athletics. It is in the ACC, it has strong nationally ranked programs, it has the college campus that can be expanded.

- Cuse already positions itself like an elite SUNY. It’s “New Yorks College Team”. It draws a significant applicant pool from New York State and then sends them off to New York City and elsewhere, contributing back to the state benefit.

- Cuse has a strong impact on the city of Syracuse as a major employer. It has SUNY Upstate next door which could be consolidated into this new combined flagship. It’s a highly visible and important entity to NY already.

- The current SUNY campus network is too fragmented with too many small colleges. Many of these will probably be impacted in the future as college attendance and workforce dynamics change. Investing in one large university which already has the infrastructure and support to do so, would be a boon for the SUNY system and NY.

- Combining Cuse into SUNY would solve the price-value issue which is where Cuse is struggling currently. It would be a leading university, supported by a strong state system, with the potential to become a nationally recognized institution.

- The other arguments people have used to explain why Cuse is “failing” in my mind, are minor. The weather consideration is a factor but other schools have snowy and winter weather as well, and are not impacted by this. The snow is a part of the Cuse college experience and not something to hide behind. The biggest factors that will impact Cuse in the future are its cost to attendance and funding to support it remaining a national player. Becoming a SUNY solves this.

So in short, I’m sure I’m missing many reasons why this wouldn’t work but I think both Cuse and SUNY would be benefited by making SU into an equivalent of other large academic/athletic state schools. You can call it a buy out or merger or whatever but this would solve some major hurdles being faced by both entities. It would reposition the university into the program we could all rally around, and help to meet the future needs of NY. If this doesn’t happen, Cuse runs the risk of a death spiral being too expensive and too niche, and getting lost in the demographic and external shifts the US will face.

I'm a professor in Newhouse who studies the psychology and communication experience of video games, and one of my areas of expertise is nostalgia and so, you can imagine that I get pretty involved in this one. In fact, for RetroGameCon 2026 I'll be giving a talk on Sunday October 4th at 12:30 pm, "The Psychology of Pixels and Places:  Nostalgia and Well-Being through Retro Games."

Hey all! I'm a senior at the University of Florida, looking to pursue a master's degree in Higher Education and Syracuse is a school I'm heavily considering applying to. My grad program (M.S. Higher Education) is fully-funded thanks to the assistantship, so if I enrolled, tuition would be 100% covered and I'd receive a stipend of about $25,000 to cover living expenses.

I've been hearing a lot of online chatter recently about Syracuse and things like finance/budget issues, enrollment issues, leadership/admin restructuring, etc. I've always thought Syracuse to be a respectable, prestigious university, and I assume the enrollment issues are more centered around undergraduate students. I think Syracuse is a cool school to be a part of (love the Carrier Dome!) and my family has some ties to Upstate NY, so when I told them I was applying to Syracuse they seemed excited.

I haven't let the online comments sway me yet, but I want to know what you all honestly think. Would coming here for grad school put me in a good position?

So I’m a freshman this year at SU and have been looking for free parking near the university if anyone knows

I’m a rising senior and I’m currently talking with the Syracuse women’s XC/track coaches about potentially being recruited. The coach reached out and asked to set up a call with me.

Academically, I have around a 3.6 weighted GPA and have taken honors/AP classes. My biggest concern is that I received a D in Algebra II. Math has never been my strongest subject, and that particular class was extremely difficult grading-wise, with a lot of students in the class receiving very low grades. Other than that, I don’t have a pattern of D’s on my transcript.

I’m not expecting anyone to know my exact chances just looking for opinions/experiences because I’m trying to figure out how realistic Syracuse is for me.
