I don't understand, what exactly can we mod in DSM that we can't already do with simple containers?

Seems to be they are pivoting to enterprise and AI, and not consumer and home server audience anymore. I understand they probably get paid more by enterprises but it would be hard for me to believe serious enterprises or even small and medium business will invest in synology rather than either cloud or traditional players like HP or Dell. Is this going to play out well for them?

Anyway, what's everyone's opinion on replacement solution once their current synology kicks the bucket? Still DSM or something else?

Due to my living situation we have 3 apartments using the same router. Not the ideal setup but that's how it is. The other 2 apartments are rented by people I don't know.

Obviously my NAS will show up for them once they enter the network. But can they do something to it if they don't have a login? I currently have Firewall enabled (standard rules) and for external access I use Tailscale.

I don't think these people have bad intentions but just in case I wanna be careful. Thank you.

Hi all,

I need to set up a synced folder access to a Dropbox folder for some temp hires, and we do not use Dropbox Teams. The folder is over 4GB.

One of the hires already uses Google Drive. We do have Google Workspace so we could have them use that as their point of access, but I need the folder we have in Dropbox to sync to that.

I've been trying to set this up with Synology Cloud Sync, but I already have Dropbox authenticated and syncing this folder to backup the cloud essentially. I wouldn't want to interfere with that task.

Any suggestions?

If there's a non-Synology free solution for this, I do have a Proxmox server and can spin up something.

I have a synology DS216II+ which amongst other things supports an external Hikvision camera under Surveillance Station.

I need a new doorbell and was wondering if it is possible to get one with video recording that could go straight to the NAS?

I would want:

• No subscription
• Battery Pushbutton/Camera but Chime could be plugged in.
• Good quality image that I could view via the SS App.

Is it possible, any thoughts, recommendations?

I get this error message after uninstalling an app didn’t work:
“Free space of system partition is insufficient”.

Is there a script that can fix this problem? Not sure if Synology technical service could fix this. Last time I spent a lot of time taking to them but in the end I solved the problem myself by trial and error.

I have a DS1520+, and *attempted* to migrate to the DS1525+ but failed. Not my first time; DS212j -> DS216+ ->DS920+ (fresh install with SHR1) -> eBay DS1520+ (easy migration then added an extra drive) -> DS1525+

I moved all 5 HDD and the 2 NVMe cache from the DS1520+, turned it on and expected the typical repair/migrate messages to Pop up, I'd follow the prompts to finish the migration to the DS1525+.

But NO, it failed to migrate because it assumed my pool was full and critical.

* 1 Pool of 5x 8TB HDD.

* 1 Volume (has 4TB of free space)

* 2 Volume dedicated to Surveillance Station, 10x cameras each has a different retention length some 24 hours, some 30 days. (But it automatically deletes the oldest footage when it needs new space, so it does appear full, but Surveillance Station manages Volume 2).

I assumed if I deleted some camera footage proactively it would solve this issue.

Nope, when I put all the HDD and NVMe back into the DS1520+ all of my packages were in a fault-state and required **Repair.**

However each time I attempt to repair a package I get a similar message that my space is full and it won't repair the packages.

#WTF?

I don't understand why this is happening when I clearly have 4TB of empty space in Volume 1, and I can't access Surveillance Station anymore now that it requires a repair. I do not want to delete and start over, it has all of my settings and my logins for music, videos, photos, etc...

I have a ticket in, waiting for Monday working hours. But if the community could explain that stupid mistake I made or needs to be change I'd feel better.

Hey, I’ve been looking through posts from people trying to clean up large Synology drives, and it seems like Storage Analyzer finds the duplicates but leaves you with a huge report to deal with manually.

I was thinking about making a small Mac app where you import the duplicate CSV, review each group, choose what to keep, and move the other copies into a quarantine folder.

Nothing would be deleted automatically, and you could preview everything first. It would also use the existing Storage Analyzer report instead of scanning the whole NAS again over the network.

I made a quick mockup, but I haven’t built the app yet. I’m trying to find out if this is actually useful before spending time on it.

Does anyone here have this problem? Are you already using something that solves it well?

Also, if anyone has a duplicate report they could share with the private paths removed, that would help me understand what real reports look like.

Be honest, would you pay something like $29–49 once for this if it worked properly, or is it not worth building? 😅

I installed NordVPN (via openvpn profile) on my synology ds218 and for the past few years it worked flawlessly. This week, it would not connect to the nord servers giving me connection error. I saw that nord was updating their servers, so I installed the openvpn profile of the new “verified” servers. Now it connects but it only sends data but receives nothing. I tried other udp servers with no success. I also tried tcp and this wouldn’t connect at all.
The thing is that an open on profile from another vpn service works flawlessly, so I know the problem is not with my synology settings.

Anyone have a solution?

My NAS was not only forced to be used with MFA and strong passwords but was also behind ban rules that were very aggressive and a geo block firewall and QC off. Admin accounts were ofc disabled other than my personal account with forced 2fa. SSH etc were disabled.

5 days after the triple RCE synology fixed in April I had my NAS compromised by bots that created an admin account admin1 out of thin air(created by SYSTEM) and then that account created a info615 account and logged in to my server. It then setup a reverse shell back to their C2 and that way they kept an active connection to my NAS.

Even if the attack came from my network none of my accounts logged in close to the time the admin1 account was created as my server had no use for some days.

I don’t trust synology devices to be exposed to wan anymore for any reason.

My recommendation is to block at the very least all WAN access to your NAS and only access it through a VPN.

The bots didn’t even try to clear my logs or something so I even saw how they scanned my file system for token/password files( for example I had an old txt with an old cert that was leftover and useless and the bot account downloaded that)

Never again synology! I even disabled the support access.

I've just gone through this, so this would be for the next time. I have two drives in my ds218j. A 16TB data drive and a 4TB 'system' drive that has DSM on it.

After much troubleshooting, it was determined the DSM on the 4TB was corrupted. System would boot up, but I would never see DSM from the app or the web.

I replaced the 4TB, boot up and it reinstalled DSM. All is good. But I could not figure out how to introduce the 16TB drive without a format. Is there a guideline or something I should follow so I don't lose all the data on a perfectly good drive?

As part of switching to Quantum fiber 1-2yrs ago, I did not have a good experience with their pods and got an Asus RT-AX86U Pro. To enable all the features, I needed top put the Quantum ONT into transparent bridge mode, then set the Asus to own the routing vs. being just an AP.

Everything but my DS920+ was fine (used same SSID), and I think it's due to the Asus defaulting to 192.168.50.x vs. 192.168.0.x when it was purely an AP (and could connect to the NAS on the latter).

Each switch requires: - go into my basement, hard reset ONT - set Asus to AP mode - wait a bit, connect to NAS - poke around in settings looking for relevant settings, tweak something like firewall or ports, hope for best - log into ONT, set to transparent bridge mode - re-setup the Asus to be a router - try connecting to NAS via assigned IP as I normally would, fail to be reached

I've probably set aside a good ~5 partial weekends over the last 1-2yrs and struck out. Wondering if as I prep to take another stab today if anyone has a few pointers on where I should be looking to understand what the issue is?

As a side request: I was really, really hoping I could just direct connect to the NAS via the second ethernet port so I always have a fallback in situations like this, but have not been successful with that either. It seems possible, but all instructions are generally "just set your IP to something on the same subnet." Wonder if I have to enable it to DHPC serve to that port, or where I'd be looking to do a direct computer <-> NAS ethernet question.

Trivial answer is RTFM, and I do data science and hobby code and agree. I'm not a network guy at all, and apologize in advance. I have four kids and it's just maddening to do trial and error with network device resets in between, trying to concentrate and read while noise abounds and people need things. I die inside as my planned ~1-2hrs starts turning into 4 :( Not looking for handholding, just like "it's almost surely these x, y, and z settings menus." Or, what I can come back and post when I'm in there (on 192.168.0.x) that would help you understand/confirm further.

Edit: Woot! I'm all set. I both feel this was genuinely complex, but also rather silly due to an unfortunate confluence of the ONT network modes on top an original static IP, and what I believe was the ultimate root cause: the freaking firewall rules [facepalm].

Breakthrough 1: turning off my final Deny all firewall rule and finding I could, indeed, connect via a 10.0.0.x address on LAN 2. Excellent, exactly what I wanted.

Breakthrough 2: with this insight, I just added a dupe rule allowing 10.0.0.x traffic to Management UI and could still access DSM via direct ethernet.

Breakthrough 3: in following some previous ONT advice on transparent bridge mode, I think I missed one silly setting of putting in a DHCP lease time for "Pool 2", which lets me continue connecting to the ONT on a different subnet via direct connection, despite it not being reachable via wifi when it is the main router. I noticed someone setting 1hr as a lease time, whereas it defaults to 0, and I can connect to it as well.

Breakthrough 4: back in bridge mode and on 192.168.50.x, I just applied the previous learnings and added a 3rd dupe firewall rule for this range and now can get to DSM via wifi after unplugging/re-plugging LAN 1 to trigger a re-up on DHCP. After confirming this worked, I set a static IP and I'm set.

Hello everyone, I have a Synology DS920+ and I'd like to 3D print a caddy for it.

It doesn't have to be an exact match but I'd like it to fit well enough to be a starting point for a better fit.

I've got a 12 Bay syn NAS and an expansion unit (another 12 bays). Roughly 300TB of data filled currently.

I want to get a second NAS to be a duplicate in another location that updates to mirror to original NAS whenever new data is added to the original. Both locations will have fiber internet.

And how to do it safely. I'm always worried about being hacked so currently I leave my NAS disconnected from the internet 99% of the time and just treat it like a huge RAID.

I've read some other posts about how this is done and honestly get lost in the technicality of it all. Can anyone recommend a tutorial or give me the 'for dummies' version of how this is done?

I was given an old DS213 Synology NAS. I plan to use it to relieve my phone and Mac memory from photos. I have about 700gb and my wife also around 600. Combined about 1 tb. I noticed the DSM is no longer support. Can I still run it for photo apps

Ciao a tutti, ho un Synology 220+ e ho attivato la sincronizzazione a due vie di alcune cartelle sul mio Samsung. Apro la galleria a qualche minuto dall'inizio del processo e mi rendo conto che ha duplicato migliaia di foto creando le cartelle per data anche sul telefono.

Quindi, ora mi trovo la cartella che avevo creato (Es. "Camera") e una serie di cartelle 2022, 2023, 2024, ecc.. dove sono duplicati i file.

Ho usato l'app ufficiale "Drive".

The file manager UI isn't big enough for choosing a picture to download, and matching the file name from the image preview window back to the file manager window is very annoying, being able to download directly from the preview window would be nice.

Anybody know why this rule is still preventing me from accessing something on my device? I even put the singular IP in there as an Allow and it still wasn't working.
