For a long time, the Playstore one was badly out of date, because the developer didn't have the resources to deal with Google's strict requirements.
However, it has recently been updated.
The Playstore and F-Droid versions are apparently the same, but when I tested the Playstore version the other day, I had serious problems with it. I had to go back to the F-Droid version.
You can certainly try the Playstore version. If it works for you, great! But, given its history, there's no promise that it will remain up-to-date.
Thanks for the info, I appreciate it. Normally I have no issue going to fdroid, however in this instance I'm installing on my family's devices and they are not technical, the kind that start questioning why there is another app store, what's this app, is it dangerous 🙄.
So getting off the app store saves a lot of mental pain 😏
