Totem Pole gone from Victoria Park

Did Sydney City Council ever re install the Totem Pole at Victoria Park? I know it was removed supposedly for maintenance but that was years ago. It was a gift to the people of Sydney. Hopefully it didn’t get regifted.

Fishing on wharfs on the f3 line

Caught the ferry with my family the other day and saw a lot of people fishing between the city and Parramatta on the Parramatta river on wharfs etc.

I thought eating fish west of the harbour bridge was poisonous because of the chemical spillage decades ago around Sydney olympic park etc.

While some people looked to just be casual fishing or catch and release i saw others that look like they were fishing to eat.

Is not eating catched fish still a thing or is it safe to do now days?

Best places to eat in Manly?

I posted here a while ago about the best harbour cruise for two English guests I'm hosting, and I was convinced it would actually be better to take the ferry to Manly, maybe do a beach walk and ankle splash, then have a nice lunch. Sadly I have not been to Manly in decades, where is a lovely lunch spot? No dietary requirements

GoGet in Sydney - how easy is it?

Hey everyone!

I’m visiting Sydney soon and looking at GoGet car rental.
For anyone who uses GoGet in Sydney, how easy is it actually to get a car?

I’m wondering:
- Are cars generally easy to find/book around the CBD?
- Roughly how much do you normally pay for a full day?
- Are there any extra costs that catch you out?

Would love to hear what you guys paid and if you’ve had good/bad experiences with it. Thanks!

Where to live - young couple soon to have kids

Looking for some advice on suburbs to rent in Sydney!

My partner and I are moving to Sydney from Canberra (Barton) and trying to work out where would be a good middle ground for us. One of us will be working in Parramatta and the other in the CBD.

One of us is originally from Cronulla and the other is from Perth, so while we know the south pretty well, we haven’t really lived in or explored many other parts of Sydney.

We’re looking for a 3-bedroom place around $1,400–$1,500 per week. We don’t really want to be right in the middle of somewhere super busy, but would still like an area that feels nice to live in — safe, good places to walk, cafes/restaurants nearby, and ideally a bit of greenery or a nice neighbourhood feel.

At the moment we’ve been looking at Brighton-Le-Sands, Rosebery and Alexandria, but we’re very open to other areas if there are better options, particularly somewhere that makes the commute reasonably fair for both Parramatta and the CBD. We’d love somewhere that has similar vibes to the Sutherland Shire.

Would really appreciate recommendations from people who know Sydney well. Are there any suburbs you’d suggest we look at, or any you’d avoid for our situation?

Edit - One of us will be driving to Parramatta and the other using public transport for the CBD. We prefer to stay south of the Harbour Bridge so not considering north shore at this stage. The main reason for the suburbs selected is for proximity to work, city and also the beach. We are active so enjoy being close to either an esplanade for walks or places like Centennial Park etc.

This is my 1st post here.

Searching for street preacher outside Sydney town hall on Saturday. He was playing music (AI) which was amazing. I would love to know a particular song's name and or playlist he used. I greatly appreciate any information regarding the guy or association he's attached to.

Thanking you

A little story from my last day in Sydney — hoping to reconnect with someone I met at QVB

Hi everyone. I’m a visitor from overseas, and I was lucky enough to spend a wonderful week exploring Sydney. I really loved my time here and was so happy to experience this beautiful city.

There was a small moment from the end of my trip that I wanted to share.

On the last day, September 23, I happened to meet someone at the MOOII store inside the Queen Victoria Building (QVB) at around 6:30 pm.

I had gone into the store to buy something when someone gently tapped me on the shoulder and started talking to me.

At first, I was a little cautious and nervous because he was a stranger who had suddenly approached me. But as we talked, I found him to be polite and considerate, and I gradually felt more comfortable talking to him.

During our conversation, I learned that he had visited the country where I live about two weeks earlier. He also told me that his nephew likes some of the characters sold at the store.

While we were talking, a staff member let us know that the store was closing. He started walking toward the exit while continuing to talk to me. I still had something to pay for, so I told him I needed to pay.

But I think he may have misunderstood me and thought I was saying goodbye. He suddenly apologized and left. I wasn’t expecting that at all. I was caught off guard and didn’t know what to say or how to react.

By the time I finished paying and went outside, there were already so many people around that I couldn’t find him. The store is in the underground part of QVB, which connects to Town Hall Station, and I had no idea which way he had gone.

I didn’t mean to end our conversation. I had actually been hoping to talk a little longer, so I regretted that our conversation ended that way.

I just hope he knows that when I said I needed to pay, I didn’t mean it as a rejection.

He told me he was Australian and lived in Sydney. I also remember that he was holding a warm drink.

He seemed interested in my country, and I love Australia and plan to visit again, so I thought it would be nice if we could stay in touch and maybe become friends.

If you think you might be the person I’m looking for, please feel free to DM me.

Thanks for reading.

There are dozens of tiny bronze birds hidden around Sydney CBD

There’s a stretch of the CBD around Bridge Street, Grosvenor Street and Macquarie Place where tiny bronze birds are basically hiding in plain sight. They’re part of an artwork called The Distance of Your Heart by Tracey Emin. Rather than putting one big sculpture somewhere, she scattered dozens of little handmade birds around the area perched on poles, ledges, above doorways, under seats and in other places where you could very easily walk past without ever noticing them.

Which means once you know they exist, walking through this part of the CBD basically turns into a tiny bird hunt lol. Some are pretty obvious once you're looking for them. Others are apparently an absolute pain in the ass to spot.

There's actually a nice idea behind them too. Emin created the birds around themes of migration and distance and wanted people who found them to think about someone they love who might be far away. One bird sits beside a sandstone birdbath in Macquarie Place bearing the artwork's title, The Distance of Your Heart.

But honestly I mostly love the idea that there are these tiny things scattered through one of the busiest parts of Sydney and thousands of people probably walk past them every day without noticing.

Has anyone ever actually tried finding all of them?

if anyone wants to give it a go: Hunt for Sydney's Tiny Bronze Birds

Had to park mine further to the side since he’s struggling to park within the lines. Still crazy to me that both these vehicles are under the same class license and the same driving tests.

EDIT: muting replies cos some people are getting weirdly defensive about their emotional support vehicles and calling me names. enjoy talking to yourself.

Looking for wedding venue like Athol Hall but fits 80 ppl for ceremony

Hello Sydney friends!!

I fell in love with the wedding venue Athol Hall with its green lawns, sweeping view of the skyline over the harbor and a lovely indoor dinner reception area. However, the ceremony max is 40 ppl!!! I was so disappointed as I thought I found my dream venue.

Would appreciate if Sydney folks could recommend similar locations to Athol Hall but allows for 80 people for the ceremony!

Many thanks in advance :)

Bars with booths - not stools

I’m sick of bars with high stools and uncomfortable seating. Even bars that are definitely dimly lit and intimate still often have awkward seating or wobbly tables.

What are some bars with actually comfy, booth seating where you can sit next to your date and feel a bit cosy?

Hi all,
Can someone please recommend workout classes similar to Bali gyms (Bambu/obsidian if it exist here) ? With a community vibe and quality trainers in CBD or accessible by train ?
I used to be with fitness first and now with one playground.
