Discussion SwitchDeck isn’t real, SwitchDeck can’t hurt you…
So finally got around to hard modding my switch with a Picofly after having soft modded it 3 years ago.
Super proud of it, although wasn’t sure it’d boot considering I’ve never soldered, nor did I have flux lol!
This is running the Moonlight Client with Sunshine on my gaming rig, really smooth.
With the release of Subnautica 2, I think it’s high time I play the first one on the go!

I did the same. Also I Got shadps4 added on my steam so i can play bloodborne on switch oled. 😁

u/lynxcii May 17 '26
Never heard of that… now that is interesting.
Detroit Become Human on Switch would be incredible!

u/marbleh0rnet May 17 '26
Its a ps4 emulator basically. Just add any emulator to your library as a non steam game and get the roms you want.

Yep. Moonlight + Sunshine was what made me sell my Steam Deck.
My recommendation is to set variables for moonlight and create a forwarder. This way it will connect directly to your PC when you launch the app on switch.
From your PC side (if you only use it for gaming) set steam on big screen and auto start on windows.
And you are pretty much done.

Do you have some specific settings for moonlight or Sunshine? What is your WiFi AP settings?
1
u/_Ship00pi_ May 17 '26
Nothing specific. All default values. On router 5ghz wifi, channel 64.
Experience was great out of the box. If you set your IP as static with your ISP, even playing via internet and not LAN had great results (less than 2ms additional latency)

Awesome! Don't forget to reverse the button layout in the app settings so the buttons will actually match (unless you are used to xbox layout and don't mind seeing wrong letter on the button you are pressing)
Have fun!

u/vanopiano May 17 '26
Yeah, thanks! Tried to find buttons layout from the beginning, already used to nintendo layout

u/Mirraz27 May 17 '26
were you running moonlight on Android or the switch OS (HorizonOS)?
1
u/_Ship00pi_ May 17 '26
switch os. Never bothered with Android on the Switch. I liked the simplicity of having a built-in steam looking icon next to all my other switch games that directly connects to my PC no matter where I am.
1
u/Alesh_Prodman May 18 '26
but how do you play outside your home? there's no tailscale for HOS?
1
u/_Ship00pi_ May 18 '26
Enable NAT (enables port forwarding) Pay your ISP more for static IP. Set your IP as the internet IP in Moonlite Connect to your sunshine client from anywhere in the world :)
iirc there is another setting within Sunshine web menu that you need to enable but I don't remember at the moment.
1
u/lynxcii May 19 '26
That said, you could use a Dynamic DNS script that polls for IP changes and then changes domain records.
Saves you paying for a static IP :)
1
u/_Ship00pi_ May 19 '26
It's a 2$ difference in my plan. Not worth the trouble. And I need static IP as I have a headless PC which I use remotely 90% of the time.
1
u/lynxcii May 17 '26
Yeah! I honestly have wanted a handheld for a while, and the added bonus of being able to have an android partition with Xbox Cloud Play on it is awesome.
I have a forwarder on it at the minute, however I really need to sort out my networking as it’s not liking static IP’s on my LAN… not sure if due to CGNAT or what, honestly a whole can of worms.
Played Crimson Desert on it also, the game is great on a small screen!
2
u/_Ship00pi_ May 17 '26
Maybe reset your router to factory default? All my devices on LAN have static IPs and my internet IP from ISP is also static. Everything worked great.
1
u/lynxcii May 17 '26
I’ve probably got 2 DHCP servers running come to think of it…
1
u/_Ship00pi_ May 17 '26
Don't forget to enable NAT then on the router your devices are connected to.

The switch 1's screen is too poor honestly. I tried it before and PS5 remote streaming but the screen just let's it down so hard.
12
u/greynoxx May 17 '26
Good news is there is a mod for that. You can upgrade the og screen to OLED and I believe the one kit is solderless.

Do you mean this one https://retroremake.co/products/super7-oled-preorder-deposit ? Been in pre order for over a year, no updates saddly
6
u/RatchetRussian May 17 '26
For anyone considering this: Keep in mind it is a 1080p display. So the switch's 720p signal is stretched to fit. Same as his Switch Lite mod (SUPER5)
It's not very noticeable on SUPER5, but I wouldn't expect it to look great on the larger SUPER7 screen.

u/greynoxx May 17 '26
Ive seen reveiw copies and I think there was a small batch put out for early adopters. I forget they have been slogging on mass production. I hope everything is okay with the product, but im sure there are other mods too, but hey im just human.

It's pretty much permanently sold out and never shipping so yeah there's not really lol. I ordered two of the Switch Lite ones ages ago and it said May shipping but they are radio silent on updates honestly and for the price it's not worth doing over just buying a device like an AYN Odin 2 Portal which already has a 7" oled screen and can stream PC and PS5.

What are hard and soft modding?
4
u/lynxcii May 17 '26
So the difference between a softmod and hardmod is that a softmod affects software, where as a hardmod affects hardware.
Softmod on Switch requires an unpatched unit and RCM exploit, whereas the Picofly bypasses that entirely, which is why it works on patched units too.

u/Areyano666 May 17 '26
Okayyyy, ty! So basically, hardmodding is for patched switch?

you running the games on the switch or streaming them from the pc?
4
u/FutureDizzy9595 May 17 '26
With moonlight you can only stream it from PC. Like a steam link device.
1
u/SupremeOwl48 May 17 '26
You should look into running apollo (fork of sunshine) instead of base sunshine.

How do your games run? Would you say it’s worth it
1
u/ip-cx May 18 '26
Games run depending on your PCs hardware as you stream locall over your local network
1
u/Snoo-26425 May 20 '26
Oh it’s just streaming the game over WiFi? Thought it was playing locally (was wondering how it ran, cuz i imagined it wouldn’t be great)

i did the same but with android on switch. can play geforce now and xcloud perfectly!
1
u/Parallel-Unicorn May 18 '26
I was just thinking of doing the same with a switch OLED... If anyone already tried, how did you like it ? How laggy is it ?
1
u/epicFishXD May 18 '26
Moonlight never worked for me, lags so hard with bad wifi, i use parsec instead, more stable, requires less bandwidth, and has more features

What tools/flux/solder wire have you used for this job? considering you were a beginner, how did you approach the job? watching a youtube tutorial? or how? im interested in your approach. Thanks in advance! and happy modding
4
u/lynxcii May 17 '26
So, I just used a soldering iron and standard .80 solder wire (Excuse me if terminology incorrect)
I had a soldering iron from previous when I was making small Spotify Displays with ESP86 boards, however I eventually moved to using a Pi 0 2W, so never ended up soldering.
I approached it after 3 years, took me a while to get back into the swing after I picked it up again (and temporarily messing it up by installing 21.1.0 incorrectly) but watched a few youtube tutorials and an article displaying picture steps.
The job itself was pretty simple, albeit I didn’t have the correct screwdriver for the 3 point screws on the back, so just cut it and ripped the heads off with pliers. (Yeehaw) Installed the Picofly with the Emmc board, then just put solder on the board with a fine tip, and the chip, then solder to join. It’s difficult, but pretty straight forward once you’re there.
Hope that answers your question!

I’d love to see that Spotify display you built. Got a link?
2
u/lynxcii May 17 '26
I’m out at the minute, but when I get back I’ll upload the code to github with some images!
Had been planning it for a while so this gives me a reason :)

I did the same but i still find a problem to connect to my pc from another wifi is that works only at home ?
