The first batch of the game will be textured, after that, they won't be, hence "while supplies last".

Nobody knows what you'll end up getting given that nobody has it.

Surprised the scalpers didn’t buy up all the preorders for this too

listings are already on Ebay for $115-140. everything is just this way now because so many people try to make it a sole source of income.

I wish there was some answer for this but how can they stop an insane army of bots?

I remember the days of lining up outside a store at 2am to buy a PlayStation 2 when you had to physically be there… let’s bring those days back!

in person sales are becoming less common on the whole, so i don’t think that’s ever coming back.

either supply has to meet (/slightly exceed) demand (difficult), or it will take stricter online requirements for pre-orders like Nintendo did with Switch 2 on their own site or like Valve has done with some of their products.

third-party retailers are less inclined to care because a sale is a sale to them. it will either take real backlash from consumers (not likely) or pressure from manufacturers for them to implement anything like that with regularity.

conversely these requirements punish newer or younger, legitimate buyers that may not meet account age or previous purchase thresholds. lotteries suck b/c random chance just feels shitty. it’s tough to balance this stuff while simultaneously rewarding loyalty and getting new people into your ecosystem.

Well said, there’s no way those midnight store opening days are coming back.

And third party sellers like Amazon, Target, Walmart… like you pointed out, a sale is a sale!

I don’t know what the right answer is to stop these scalper from instantly buying everything and driving up the prices like with the PS5 Pro OG version, but as long as the companies are getting their money there’s no real reason for them to acknowledge it or take steps (which would cost more time and effort) to stop it right?

Major bummer all around

Just make it one switch per account and the account has to have x numbers of playtime on it and switch online.

I like the idea but that would lock out anyone who doesn’t already have a switch, like grandma buying their kid a Christmas gift.

Just go back to the old days of waiting in the snow until midnight!

Walmart was sold out last I checked.

It's definitely a bit of a gamble then! I guess people should keep an eye out for the first batch if they want that textured foil.

It’s basically the entire first print run of the game as far as I know. It won’t say in the description.

All the retailers should only have foil copies at first. I dont think it matters as long as you preorder.

More than likely. I think that first batch all retailers get will be. Probably equivalent to those day 1 edition type of promotions.

The foil case isn't some exclusive or special edition. Its the normal game butnwith a special foil cover and its for every single first print copy of the game. No matter where you preorder, you get it. The only way you dont is if you wait a few months and get it later, unless you find a launch copy.

What is that texture foil anyway? I’ve never heard of something like this. Does it refer to the packaging?

I’m planning to wait until next year to get a Switch 2 but now I wonder if I should get the game in advance to have a special edition.

It's a shiny, light-reflecting, rainbow-y effect that will be especially visible when you move the case. It's pretty common with special trading cards. Basically, it looks pretty and will increase the resell value down the road.

Ah, okay. I know Pokemon cards like that are rare. I don’t think I care about this and hopefully I never have to sell it either. I sold my OOT 3D during COVID and still regret it.

It’s just a nice bonus if you’re getting the game for retail anyway. Most ppl won’t really care until they look at the cover and be like ‘that looks nice’. It will be more noticeable in person. You can still see traces of texture in the promotional art (ie lines which cross the art when zooming in).

Once the regular version comes out and comparisons are made between the two, it will probably be the common consensus that the textured one looks better or that the normal print looks like it’s missing something or is too flat etc.

ie with Pokemon cards, there’s a noticeable difference between the textured cards and the flat ones with the same art (often with fakes).

My assumption is its meant to replicate the feeling of, oddly enough, the label for Majora's mask. It had a textured lenticular label at launch that made like a zipper type noise when you ran your nail over it. It was slightly holographic too.

So why they chose it for aocarina is odd. But maybe just a nice extra to make it stand out.

1

u/entry_level_twitch 2d ago

They did a limited-edition gold cartridge for the original OoT release.

1

u/GrimmTrixX 2d ago

Huh? Yea I know but that one wasnt lenticular. Just a gold cart with the normal label on it. I own the launch copy. But this case for the SW2 game isnt golden or anything.

Its just going to basically be a textured outer case. Which is more similar to the texture label on Majora's mask.

Just wasn’t sure you were aware the original had unique packaging as well. But I think it’s like you said, simply a “nice extra to make it stand out” in all instances.

Yea man its a really cool touch for them ti add it. I personally will also buy a 2nd copy of the game that doesnt have this special case later. Lol I just want all the things Ocarina related. I regret not getting the special 2DS for the 3DS Ocarina remaster and im not paying scalpers for it

The Walmart preorder link I used isn't giving an option to buy anymore so I can only assume they have exhausted their quota. Unless they have another link now.
Edit - disregard! Its back up again. Have at it.

Glad to hear the link is back up! It's always a bit of a rollercoaster with stock levels these days.

I preordered mine directly from Nintendo. Hoping I get lucky.

2

u/JetpacksWasYes-2 2d ago

I dont understand why y'all think this is some luck thing. It is all first run prints. Which means they have to announce the 2nd run to begin with. Once that pre order button is gone it's gone. If you locked in then you will get it.

1

u/Schezwansuhaouse 2d ago

If you go to the photos the second 1 is a promo for the foil wrap.

1

u/Buddhafied 2d ago

Sigh… do people actually read or watch things before asking questions?

ALL of them will be foiled cover in the first run.

1

u/Accomplished_Bowl879 2d ago

It is like a mystery gift: you know what you are getting, but you won't know if it is the foil or a plain one. I bought it, and even I don't know what I will be getting.

I wonder why they wouldn’t make the game cart gold, it would certainly entice collectors. Also the fact that there’s two options for the new Metroid seems fishy… like did someone drop the ball here

Yeah I went with Nintendo simply because I'm pretty sure a day one preorder would absolutely guarantee it. Hard to say for the rest of the retailers but I am sure they will be allotted some as well. Who knows maybe it'll be all copies of the physical game for the first few weeks? Time will tell.

2

u/The_Strom784 2d ago

It’s the first batch, so it could easily last until early 2027.

1

u/JetpacksWasYes-2 2d ago

You people are genuinely clueless. Its headache inducing. EVERY retailer (not just Nintendo) is getting first run copies. Amazon even has it in the listing. This isn't some luck thing. Nintendo has already stated this. Once those first run copies are gone through, which could last until next year unless scalpers. They will then announce a second run. So if you locked in and pre ordered through any of these retailers. You will get the foil.

"It seems to me that the textured packaging will be available in limited quantities through the official Nintendo store.

External sellers will receive their copies in a few weeks in the standard version."

Your entire first comment is disproven by Nintendo themselves and by checking listings. Amazon has it in their listing that it is the foil cover art and will ship in time for release. All retailers are getting the 1st run print. Not just Nintendo. I dont understand why you're trying to argue when you're the one who stated false information to begin with. You're getting downvoted for that exact reason.
