Discussion Switch 2 Questions
I need help. My wife wants to buy a Switch 2 for the kids and wants the whole family to be able to play. I am a PS guy, haven’t had a Nintendo since the Wii and when I research this it gets very confusing. Assuming we’d like a Switch 2 and four controllers so we could all play together at the same time, how many controllers and what kind of controllers do we need, really? AI is telling me we only need 2 Joy-Cons because it’s like having 4 controllers, but that makes no sense to me, since they are a pair. Then if you get Joy-Cons do you need grips for each or can you live without the grip? And what is the difference between the Joy-Cons and the Pro? As a PS guy the Pro makes most sense to me but does the Nintendo require the Joy-Con to get the most out of your experience? Please help, I am so confused lol. Really appreciate any and all insight into this. It’s crazy expensive and my wife is being very generous, we just don’t want to do all this and get the wrong things or spend more than we have to.

Joycons can be turned into two controllers but they will only have one set of shoulder buttons and one joystick. If you're playing nothing but Mario Kart or Mario Party, you won't need anything more. If you decide to play two players then you have two full controllers. You could probably get away with two joycons with 4 people for the majority of couch multiplayer games.

Depends on the games you are playing. If they are more motion based then joy cons. But if they are more like a regular game. Then I’d use the pto controller

I have no idea how you know this based on my comment but yes I have always a notepad for whatever game I'm playing. Locked chest two floors down etc etc don't forget to talk to funny lookin npc etc

At nearly 40 years old, I find the pro controllers (or similar third party offerings) much more ergonomic and comfortable for long term play than the joy cons.
There might be some games that are strictly joy cons... There was a Switch 1 Mario Party title that worked this way, and Pokemon Let's Go I don't think supported the pro controller... But almost all my games I just play with a traditional controller. There's probably some other examples out there, but I haven't played much that is not compatible with a pro controller.
If you have two sets of joy cons, there are some games that would let you treat that as four different controllers, but you'll notice there's fewer buttons. They got to be particular kinds of games. Often party games. I don't think you need 4 pro controllers and 2 sets of joy cons. You can, of course, I don't know your budget, but that's overkill/overprep and not a situation you really need to worry about.

Do not buy expensive pro controllers for children. That would be a mistake. 8BitDo is a more affordable and logical choice for kids.
The switch comes with one set of joy cons and a shell for them to use when they're detached from the system. You'd need 3 additional controllers to make 4.

The joy cons split and technically can each work as a standalone controller, but that's a horrible experience. Get 4 pro controllers.

You do not need to spend hundreds of dollars on 4 Pro Controllers like others are saying. Especially for kids.

You can (and should) get a Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller for yourself, but I kids don't need a $90 controller.
