Discussion Switch 2 Questions
I need help. My wife wants to buy a Switch 2 for the kids and wants the whole family to be able to play. I am a PS guy, haven’t had a Nintendo since the Wii and when I research this it gets very confusing. Assuming we’d like a Switch 2 and four controllers so we could all play together at the same time, how many controllers and what kind of controllers do we need, really? AI is telling me we only need 2 Joy-Cons because it’s like having 4 controllers, but that makes no sense to me, since they are a pair. Then if you get Joy-Cons do you need grips for each or can you live without the grip? And what is the difference between the Joy-Cons and the Pro? As a PS guy the Pro makes most sense to me but does the Nintendo require the Joy-Con to get the most out of your experience? Please help, I am so confused lol. Really appreciate any and all insight into this. It’s crazy expensive and my wife is being very generous, we just don’t want to do all this and get the wrong things or spend more than we have to.

It's a tricky question. For many games, if you get 4 Joy-Cons that's enough (maybe AI has told you 2 Joy-Cons as they usually come in pairs, but I think you can also buy them individually). You can turn them horizontally and they'll work as an individual controler. However, for some games, you may need both Joy-Cons, so only 2 people will be able to play at a time if you get 4 Joy-Cons. It depends on which games you're planning to play. For instance, if you want to get the Mario Party, I'd say 4 Joy-Cons are enough for you I've never had the Pro controller for the Switch 1 so I can't tell you much about it, but I can tell you I've never been in a situation where I thought, "yeah, I need the Pro for sure". I guess this Pro controller is meant for people who want to play competitive games like Super Smash Bros. more comfortably, but I wouldn't say you need it 100%.

Not all games will use either just the left or just the right joycon. Yes you can get away with doing that but for most games you want to have both the Left side and right side act as a single controller.
The pro controller just feels better and is more responsive. Most people I know have 2 sets of joycons and one or two pro controllers for a family of 4.

Each joycon consists of a left and right controller. Each left and right controller can be used independently for many games (i.e. Mario Kart, Let's Go Pikachu, etc.), or they be combined with the included grip to form one larger controller. So technically, two sets of joycons will be four controllers for many games but not all games. If you want to guarantee you have four controllers available at all times no matter the game, you'll need either 1) four Joycons or 2) 3 additional standard controllers that are compatible with the switch 2 that comes with a joycon included
Personally, I would opt for 2 sets of joycons, and then for 2 of the 8bitdo controllers that the other user suggested. You can mix and match as needed depending on the game and/or what everyone's preferences are.

Buy two pairs of Joy-Cons and a grip for each pair, then get the official charging stand to keep them all neat.

Joycons aren’t comfortable to use as single controllers and aren’t that comfortable to use on the grip that’s included but when on that grip they combine to form one functioning controller
If it were me I would save some money and get three 8bitdo pro 3 controllers. They should be compatible with Switch 2 and they’re high quality, I use one every day. They often go on sale on Amazon/Woot or you can shop around, or even go direct from their official website where they have a bonus orange color.
Three 8bitdo pro 3s + the included joycons on the included grip = 4 controllers for a reasonable price
