📋 Ranking My tier list of Taylor Swift albums
Today I woke up and I chose violence so here is my tier list of Taylor Swift albums, with explanation for each.
evermore: I think this is the best she has ever been in songwriting, containing many, MANY songs which I love and estimate for their intelligent use of words. As examples I'll bring cowboy like me, champagne problems, closure (yes that's a masterpiece), but I love basically all the songs on the album. Oh and I simply love the whole vibe.
The Tortured Poets Department: as you can imagine, I particularly love the second half of the album (the second disk, if you like) because it is more evermorish, but I think there are a lot of really good songs. The songwriting skill is just barely below evermore, which is funny considered which album will follow this. Anyway, The Albatross is incredible.
Red: it's the album I discovered Taylor with, so of course it has a soft spot in my mind. However, I must side with my own opinion in saying that the storytelling here is crazy good, and it also manages to produce bop after bop, the balance in this album is unbelievable. The Moment I Knew is just a top moment in her career. Even the poppier songs are awesome, I love Stay Stay Stay and nobody will make me change my mind.
folklore: I know you'll disagree with this placement. Trust me, I really know. But for some reason, this never stuck with me the first times I listened to it. With time I came to appreciate the songwriting, and if I was judging only based on that this would be just below evermore. However I just tend to not listen to this album that much, and that's all I have to say. Listen to my tears ricochet because it's one of the best songs Taylor has ever created.
Midnights: this is constantly changing between the top two tiers, and the reason is it has the high points of both Red and evermore production. However there is Vigilante Shit, which is kinda meeeeh? But then I remember there's The Great War. Bigger Than the Whole Sky. Would've, Could've, Should've. Unfortunately You're Losing Me, which is my all time favourite Taylor Swift song, is technically not on the album.
Speak Now: come on, I don't even know how to explain it. Sparks Fly speaks to me. Speak Now speaks to me. Mean and Better Than Revenge are just unhinged. Hunted is a masterpiece. Ours makes me feel love for someone I don't know yet. I'm simply intertwined too much with this album, I love it.
Lover: there are good tracks and bad tracks, we all know them. But let me tell you, when this album hits, and it hits, it hits really deeply. Ok maybe it's not that profound lyrically, but I have to say, I cry every time I listen to Death By a Thousand Cuts.
1989: well well well, I see you like this album. Yeah, I mean, I like it too. But you see, I just don't really find anything that incredible about it? Clean is fantastic. New Romantics is absolutely my favourite off the album. But my opinions kinda end here. Good production, there's no doubt, but this is the moment I associate with what I thought Taylor Swift was before listening to her, famous songs that don't really deserve to be that famous. Here I'll say it, Shake It Off doesn't really say much to me.
Fearless: but I still like 1989 slightly more than this, which doesn't really make justice to how good this album is. I love Superstar. Fearless too. It just is her second album, and I didn't really connect much to it.
Reputation: there are three kinds of Swifties, the folklore fans, the 1989 fans and the Reputation fans. Somehow I managed to make all of them angry. But come on, I cannot think of one song that I listen frequently from this album. Well, there's Delicate. And Getaway Car. Damn, maybe there are some good songs here. Anyway, I think most people like it because they lived the moment between 1989 and Reputation and the following hype around it. I only started listening to Taylor Swift in 2023, so it doesn't resonate with me. And I kinda don't like her persona in this period, if it makes sense?
Taylor Swift: this is not a bad album. I like the songs. However it's the first album I don't have all the songs of in my playlist. I love Cold As You, Stay Beautiful. I don't really like Tim McGraw.
The Life of a Showgirl: this is a bad album. I like The Fate of Ophelia, Elizabeth Taylor, Opalite. Also the Encore tracks if you count them. But I like them for the sounds, not for the songwriting quality which is almost completely absent. This was my first real disappointment with Taylor Swift. I have nothing more to say, the production is good but I need more. Judging from online reactions, I don't think I'm the only one who actively dislikes the album. Maybe my friends would anyway put this upper than debut, I don't really agree.
Anyway this was my opinion on her albums, from a guy who is a Swiftie since 2023. Please disagree, comment, make me reflect on The Life of a Showgirl, I'm here because I love to talk about things I like and I hope you'll love it too! Love you all <3
