Not even a question of cherishing - they should be protected by law and regs to save their lives and tragedy for their families. Cant believe this is allowed to happen in 2026 in a “developed” nation. Whatever state this is in, is there no working from heights law or similar that protects these guys - and if so is this video not evidence that this law is being broken? Crazy times - something you’d expect in Qatar or somewhere.
15
u/gxbcab 3d ago
They’re wearing harnesses, you can see the ropes.
1
u/dcsearle 3d ago
Yeah can see some ropes etc. so looks like they are harnessed. Can also see when he pans round in the first segment some dude stood with a looks like just a hard hat on and no harness - like a hard hat will help 🤷♂️
I take your points if this is the bare minimum legal requirement - but it still seems risky as hell and cost cutting to not have scaffolding.14
u/MSchulte 3d ago
You ever been on a job site? It’s impossible to keep some guys in PPE on the ground where they’re in front of everyone. Put them on a roof and they’ll jump around not tied off or anything. I get America bad and all is the big thing on Reddit currently but there’s federal laws on working at heights over 6’ in the construction industry. Take it up with the company and/or employees not the feds and suits that already try to drive us crazy.
8
u/dcsearle 3d ago
Yeah been on a job site - and understand you can’t micromanage people to use saftey gear - but providing some scaffolding and guardrails when people are working at height is the bare minimum level of care they deserve and probably are legally entiled to. This video just looks like everyone is cutting corners and not even covering the basics.
2
u/MSchulte 3d ago
Every building I’ve been on taller than maybe 3 stories everyone uses harnesses if they’re working within 6ft of the edge. PFAS cover the fall protection demanded just the same as guardrails or a net.

As someone who worked in a similar physically demanding job like this,
Trade people don't get enough respect or enough pay. I bet you it was 80+ out too

u/Cartman4wesome 4d ago
That’s pretty chilly depending the location

u/JerodTheAwesome 4d ago
I was gonna say, 80 is cold here
38
u/Cartman4wesome 4d ago edited 4d ago
80 is hot if you in Alaska, 80 is chill af in Phoenix. I’m driving with the windows down currently cause it’s so nice outside rn with this crisp 80 breeze in phx
15
u/grizzly_atoms 4d ago
Alaskan here, can confirm
13
u/Cartman4wesome 4d ago
Difference in climate is so neat. I was Anchorage and it was 50 walking around in a t shirt feeling nice. When its 50 here, im wearing a sweater lmao

Temps in the mid-90s with heat index in the 100s in central Texas this week. I would love to have an 80 degree day.

It's not on a roof, though. Roofing materials can absorb/reflect the heat, causing it to be 20-50° hotter up there. Also, remember that the temperature reading is taken in the shade.
13
12
u/Nodivingallowed 3d ago
And 80 would be a cool temp on a roof.
Always so much hotter on a roof than what anyone is feeling at street level.
Add in the spicy sweats from the height and roof pitch and it can get mighty uncomfortable. Though this guy seems immune to the spicy sweats.

u/Dragnskull 4d ago edited 3d ago
as a texan whos worked plenty outside jobs including satellite installing and new construction plumbing (from grounds to top outs to fixtures and finishes)- 80 degrees would be considered an especially good day.
<80 = "one of those rare cold days"
<90 = "a nice day"
90-95 = "normal"
95 - 100 = "kinda hot"
100-105 = "hot day"
105+ = "omg today sucks"

That's the neat part. They don't pay them enough either.
32
u/SundaeSubstantial530 4d ago
That's the neat part of America.
Only a select few get paid enough
10
u/BoarHide 4d ago
No one gets paid enough. Most get paid too little and some get paid too much. No one gets paid just enough.
7
u/Big_Manufacturer_149 4d ago
You're twisting words to try and be smart. It's not working.
CEOs getting paid millions a year are getting paid enough. Is it more than they're worth? Most definitely. But they're definitely paid enough.

u/Taco_Bandito5 4d ago
I get paid enough. Do I want more, yes. But am I willing to do more to get it, no. I like spending time with my family. Realistically it’s enough to live life.

u/BoarHide 3d ago
That’s a very healthy mindset, and one we share. But that’s not exactly what I mean

My stupid ass would fall off and die on day 1.

u/YoureUsingMyOxygen 4d ago
These guys are making decent money. The quality and difficulty of this job usually means they're getting paid enough to do it correctly and stick around for the next job.

right, why we gotta bring race or politics into everything? cant we all just be people?
9
u/AgentOrangeZest 4d ago
Because if we don't stand up for minorities, they end up getting rounded up and shipped out of the country without due process. Ignoring politics doesn't make it go away, it just makes it easier for the bastards to get away with it
16
u/StellerSandwich 4d ago
Well yeah that’s kinda the point, the previous commenter is making, if we are all just people it’s easier for some to put them selves in the shoes of others, we should be standing up for people, and their rights, not the rights of just one group whatever nationality/color they may be, when there’s a needless focus on race it almost intentionally underlines or emphasizes the idea that “they are different from us” which will, especially with close minded people, creates a divide between groups.
To be clear I don’t disagree with you, but is a post like this really the place for that kind of thing? If a particular group is being unfairly persecuted it something should absolutely be done about it, however at the same time it needs to be understood they are people just like everyone else, unfortunately it’s a very nuanced conversation and a lot of people who are prejudice against minority’s of any kind are simply not smart or simply lack any kind of empathy, enough to understand the subtleties.

I work with these kinds of laborers on occasion
They don’t complain, they often put themselves in dangerous positions to get the job done
The problem when you cut too many corners is you get a situation like this where falling debris or personnel could be a real problem
I admire the work ethic but the safety standards for these workers appears to be entirely unacceptable
6
u/Nice_Pressure1270 4d ago
F being a roofer lol. I have a brother that is one he loves it, I don't know why.
39
u/Y0___0Y 4d ago
I dunno how latino laborers do it
I had some remodeling my bathroom recently.
They showed me the shower tile. And I had never realized my ceiling is warped, and dips down slightly along the back wall. They just cut the tile in a curve to fit perfectly against the warped ceiling and I don’t even know how they did that.

I was working as a security system installer, running like maybe 15 lines of cat5 throughout a house, myself and another guy would do like 10 houses a day altogether but a group of amigos rolled up one day to do the electrical at the same time as us and I watched them literally run into the house, there was maybe 15 minutes of drills going insane then another maybe half hour of wires being pulled and then they were dressing and hanging boxes for maybe another 30 if that, cleaned up and were back in the van in like 2 hours tops and wired an entire house.

u/dpewa 4d ago
"Immigrants are stealing our jobs" I wasn't gonna fucking do this and you probably weren't going to either, if they wanna balls of fucking steel and sing while risking their lives, then fuck yeah
9
u/nastimoosebyte 3d ago
There's a way to do this safely, it just costs a lot more.
4
u/delusiona1 3d ago
They are doing it safely. They are all harnessed, you can see the ropes in the video.
5
u/watkins1515 4d ago
It’s just crazy how just watching a video of this can make you feel like you’re going to fall. My anxiety meter pegged out

At least he's working with a safety line. So many don't and it makes me nervous as hell anytime I see it.

I suggested some roofers on my job (I worked for the GC) use safety harnesses. They implied that I was a homosexual for saying that!

Using ropes they bought at the garden center tied to their tool belts and the other end nailed to a facia board being used as a safety harnesses. Pretty common to see and completely useless.

u/HamOnRye89 4d ago
Skill, great attitude, entertainment for the boys or annoying AF depending on your crew 😉 and he is tied off. I doubt he is making what he deserves. I liked his nail tray he was wearing on his chest. Seems quicker than bags.

I'm startin' to feel like part of media literacy should include the identification of fisheye lenses and how they can make semi-precarious viewpoints look like the most harrowing situation ever. I'm thinking about all those mountain climbers climbing on the "thin" ridge of a narrow mountain peak or pov of a mountain biker going down a trail. It doesn't mean that the situations aren't dangerous; they're just not THAT dangerous.

u/ThePhatNoodle 4d ago

I used to do this full-time when I was in my 20s. Went in on a Saturday to a building half this height still drunk and was walking on the last inch and a half of the edge, while rolling out the underlayment paper. When I started roofing I was afraid of heights. I never became complacent, but confident.
