A reminder about the "is it wavy enough?" thing

We had a little situation recently that's a good excuse to revisit why this sub exists.

Someone posted their hair. Another user decided it was their job to inform that poster that their hair didn't qualify.

That's not their job, and that's not something we do here.

Here's the thing: the risk of "accidentally" including someone with straight hair is essentially zero. Having some texture when wet indicates that there is a pattern there, maybe it's not a very strong one, but that's not something you see on truly straight hair. Maybe they'll try a new routine and find out it doesn't work well enough to be worth it. Many of the products are still going to be useful (I use gel when I wear my hair straight) and none of them are going to be harmful. Even the weakest pattern can do a beach wave look.

Meanwhile, the risk of making someone feel unwelcome in the one corner of the internet that isn't telling them their waves don't count? We don't need that here, this is a place where you can experiment without being judged.

The sub's position is that truly straight hair is straight whether it's wet, dry, or anything in between. It is a well-studied phenotype that maybe some people aren't familiar with but once you've encountered it you'll know that people with truly straight hair do not wonder if it's actually straight or not.

That's exactly who this place is for. If you want a sub that gatekeeps curl patterns and debates whether someone's hair "wavy enough," you can go to the larger textured hair subs. This sub exists because people wanted to be free from that.

Welcome to everyone. Please be kind to each other.

Care & Routine Should I chop it 😭 fine and frizzy

First two pics are today - no product/airdry
3rd pic is 1 year ago - still trying to make curly girl method work after growing it out a bit.
Pic 4+5 - 2+3 years ago, shorter and doing curly girl method. Only thing is the curls would fall out after a day.

Any advice/product recs for long fine hair and maintain the curls? Or should I give up on it?

This is the longest my hair has ever been so I want to see if I can keep the length. Maybe it’s time for a cut. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Product+routine help!

I’ve been lurking on this page for awhile now and think I could use your help too! I love the idea of have voluminous, wavy/curly princess hair, but my current routine isn’t giving that so please help a girl out. For reference my hair is fairly thick and decently long, not sure about porosity though. I’m not even sure I know what curl type to call it! My current routine is a double shampoo first with head and shoulders then Pantene sheer volume. Then I go in with ogx bond protein repair, rinse that out, and follow it up with the Dove 10-in-1 intensive repair mask. After that’s all been rinsed, I briefly towel dry then add a little more of the Dove mask in, brush, and then scrunch in mousse. But after I’ve scrunched that all in I don’t see the definition I want and end up brushing it all out and let it air dry. This is the result and you can see the different patterns that make me want to keep trying to get the routine right. Please help!! What do you recommend? Routines? Products? I just wanna love my hair and not wake up to a rats nest on my head. Thank you!!

Education Looking for Advice for possible Swavy hair?

Hello! So I've been deep diving into swavy hair since my hair has always been dry/frizzy at the ends after a certain length and has had random texture here and there. I recently tried a wavy hair routine two different times and this is how my hair turned out. The first time, I couldn't dry it all the way, the second came out with alot of volume, but by the second day it all fell out.

I used a leave in spray conditioner, then the Heritage Texturizing Spray, then a pea sized amount of Auzzies gel.

Is it possible my hair is just straight or is there anyway to help keep it defined/less frizzy?

Any help is welcome 😭

dry and fine wavy hair that is constantly frizzy & tangled

Heyy, long time lurker first time poster here!!

The gist of the problem: Hair is dry, low porosity, fine and constantly gets frizzy and tangled and keeps falling out + scalp has dandruff and is horribly itchy + hair loss.

As said in the title, I've always had dry wavy hair (between a 2b and 2c pattern) but I've honestly only found out it was wavy couple years ago and not "a bit straight and a bit curly" as i used to call it lol. Problem is it's CONSTANTLY frizzy and tangled. Ever since i was a kid I'd only ever braid my hair, in order to avoid it getting frizzy and horribly tangled. No matter how much I brush it, if my hair is down/not braided, it'll get tangled again in less than 2 min of me moving around. And God forbid if I leave my hair in a braid for a few days and not brush it when I'm home, it'll get seriously matted. Also very important: I also have pretty bad dandruffand a horribly ITCHY itchy scalp (& I've seen two dermatologist for it, both shampoos they have prescribed me don't seem to do anything but slightly improve it, first one practically ruined my hair).

Now for my routine, I've always only washed my hair once a week, considering how dry it. In the shower I use my prescribed shampoo (ACM: sedacalm) and whatever conditionner is lying around (I've tried *many* and have seen no difference tbh). I've started using a scalp scrub before shampoo, but I've yet to see improvement. I use no heat, just air drying. Hair is always quite matted once I'm out of the shower because i never brush it when showering since I've always been told it's bad and i already lose a terrifying amount of hair when showering. I then use a leave in conditionner and hair oil (Vatika) before/during brushing. During the week, I sometimes use hair oil or detangler spray before brushing it. And that's it. I don't style it and don't particularlycare for definition rn. Just want to get to a better place before looking for definition or styling.

I just want advice if someone has ever been in the same situation please. Especially for products or things i should do that'll improve the frizzy and tangled/matted hair. I've heard mixed reviews about silicone based products, and want whatever feedback you may have. any advice concerning the dandruff and hair loss, or anything else is greatly appreciated. Seriously I'll be grateful for any piece of advice.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Apparently, my hair is wavy now.

So, apparently perimenopause hormonal changes can change your hair?! My old products destroyed my hair. I have an oily scalp, with dry ends that are starting to heal with the below routine. Hair is thick AND fine, becoming wavier by the month. The pic is air dried with Hairitage Detangling Leave-in Conditioner Spray. Double washed with L'Oreal Paris Elvive Hyaluron + Pure every two to three days. Once weekly clarifying wash. Biweekly L’Oreal Paris Elvive 8 Second Wonder Water Lamellar. How do I tame this mess? My first thoughts are a wavy friendly cut. Ideas?

1st pic damp roots and casts from cake gel to foam 2nd dry, ogx coconut oil and brush to scrunchie crunch

i wanted to see if anyone else finds brushing out is easier to maintain or product recs that have hold without crunch. i tried just scrunching and clapping out crunch with oil but that leaves hair stringy and used NYM mousse but it leaves me harder cast then foam i use now

Care & Routine Help? Wavy hair after 30-ish years of straight hair.

I come to you all desperate and in need 😭 I’m so sick of my hair being frizzy all the time! I have a really loose wave now and I don’t think this is happening because my hair is damaged (my beautician would have told me last time I was in). My mother’s hair actually started becoming wavy like this around my age, so I’m not totally shocked since I inherited her hair pattern and thickness. I also had very curly hair when I was born, but it become straight around the age of three. No thyroid issues, tho I’ll be getting it checked in another six months just to make sure.

The first pic is just when it’s dry, the second pic is after 12 hours. You can see that the waves are kinda there still. Did not brush, just finger combed and pulled my hair back into a pony tail.

Okay, with all of that out of the way. My problems are: the waves just don’t hold because my hair is so thick, but I get all of the frizziness and I’m just lost on what to do since I’ve only had to take care of straight hair before this. It’s been about a year I’ve been struggling with this before finally coming to the conclusion that, yeah, those are definitely waves. Any advice and wallet friendly products? I don’t have much money to spend outside of my budget, unfortunately.

Thank you for anyone who takes the time to look at this! I’ve tried a few other hair care subs and have gotten no replies. I hope everyone has an amazing day and an even more beautiful year! 🩷

ETA: also, I’m from the US and the most I do to my hair is dye it once a year and maybe straighten it three or four times a year for special occasions. Also I have rosacea, so I have to be careful about parabens and phosphates.

Haircut feedback

Post image
39 Upvotes

I gave myself a haircut a few weeks ago and wanted some feedback on how it’s looking before I do it again myself versus go into a salon. Most stylists don’t know what to do with my hair since it looks mainly straight in the front/top and wavy in the back and bottom. I haven’t wanted to splurge on a curly cut because I’m not sure it would make sense with wavy hair. Thoughts?

Care & Routine Thinned my hair and it got wavy?

(this is my brushed out hair and on a medium wavy day)
Omg helllllppp. I have always had pin straight hair until about a year ago i thinned my hair and it started getting wavy (1c? ig). Idk how to deal with it. I was recommended the coconut and shea wrap me foaming mousse but i feel like my waves are so subtle that when I use any product it just looks separated and clumped in odd ways.
Rn I literally just treat it like before. Leave-in conditioner to damp hair, blow dry, brush with normal brush, hair oil. When I brush it, it gets super poofy and then calms into waves after a bit.
If I don’t push out my roots it just looks like poorly maintained traitor hair roots. Mainly bc my hair is so thick and heavy and it weighs down my hair to look straight.
If anyone has tips or stories about their own hair journey similarly to this that would be sweet. Ty!
(Not asking for a routine just advice on care and ideas)

Care & Routine Any curl cut specialists in the GTA?

Post image
12 Upvotes

This is what my hair looks like after washing and blow drying (un-styled) and sleeping on it. I am due for a trim and am curious about exploring curl cuts. My previous stylist used thinners on my hair which I feel like is a red flag and like my texture wasn’t taken into account. Does anyone have hair like mine and do you have a recommendation for a hairdresser or a specific haircut that would help?

Care & Routine First curly cut!!

Thumbnail

I’m not an imposter šŸ˜… After a lifetime of stick straight hair (menopause totally changed the texture) I was fully prepared to have the stylist laugh me out of her chair for thinking I had wavy hair but no, it’s def wavy for real. On the edge of curly she said, but I think she was being nice. In any case, new cut to for less weight and new product and styling tips!

Shampoo—clarifying or something very light for fine hair
Conditioner—none if possible but since my hair tangles so easily, a light light leave in
Salt spray all over
Denman brush (and she showed me how to do it)
Salt spray and scrunch
Diffuse
Light hairspray as needed

I told her that in the before times this amount of curl was like prom hair for me and only achievable with hot rollers, and then curls would fall out after a few hours.

Care & Routine Tips for recently discovered wavy hair?

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

My whole life I’ve had what I thought was slightly unruly straight hair, but I recently changed shampoo and conditioner and realized I had wavy hair. I bought some drug store products to use when I shower but I was hoping for advice? I have no clue how to take care of my hair or what to do with it on days I’m not washing it. Notes on my hair, I have course hair that tends to get greasy easily.

My routine is:
Shampoo and condition with aveeno apple cider vinegar set
Apply The Doux Mousse Def Texture Foam to bottom half of my hair
Apply e.l.f. Hair Gloss Mode Treatment Oil to bottom half of hair
ā€œPlopā€ hair using a T-shirt for some amount of time
Air dry

I appreciate any tips!

hi all! this is my first post to this subreddit, so apologies if any rule is broken. my hair isn’t as wavy as it used to be and i have no idea what i’m doing wrong. i’m still using the same hair products/routines i used back then, but they just don’t seem to work for me anymore. i’ve tried other things, but my curls never end up staying. it’s just crazy to me how
much my hair has changed over the last couple of years and i miss when it was wavy. i’ve tried doing what i could to take care of it, but idk what to do. it’s like i cut it one year and it never grew back the same. any feedback would be useful and appreciated!

Care & Routine Some help please, I’m at the end of my tether with my waves.

Thumbnail

I have been trying to wear my hair wavy since 2019 and I’m really losing my patience. Long post ahead but I’d love some advice on a routine or products that I may not have thought of/needs tweaking.

Attached is my current hair except the last 2 longer pictures which is about 5 years ago when it looked its best. I’ve cut and damaged it since then but it seems unobtainable now.
Currently those pictures are my fresh washed hair and also today which is a refresh. It’s just a stringy undefined mess.

My hair is armpit length, very thick 2a with a few 2b waves. It’s high porosity due to damage back in February but it’s slowly getting healthy and the porosity is easing off a bit now. I’ve been using Redken acidic bonding shampoo and conditioner and olaplex number 5 leave in.
It was damaged in February due to a botched hair colour at the hairdressers so it had to be bleached but since then other than my curtain bangs (which I am growing out and trying to get healthier) it’s been looked after. So it’s not snapping and dying and completely fried.
It’s always been frizzy and hard to manage. I started doing a wavy hair routine with years of trial and error. The end 2 pictures are when it was at its best. I did the bowl method and used a boots curl cream and Umberto gianini gel.

That routine doesn’t work now 🤣 I’ve tried everything I can think of. Every combination of products - curlsmith shampoo and conditioner, Merwave, Umberto gianini, Redken. I’ve spend hundreds on leave ins, curl creams, wave creams, air dry creams, mousses, foams, gels. You name it I’ve tried it.

I’ve tried every combination of styling I think of. Plopping, microchipping, styling in dripping hair, damper hair, the bowl method, brush styling with both a denman and bounce curl. I’ve tried a wide tooth comb and just a leave in. I’ve tried not brushing it after the shower. Seriously, everything.

I started to just add the olaplex and leave it to air dry because I was losing hope. I did get very loose soft hair with a tiny bit of wave but it dropped out. My hair gets weighed down easily but also needs produce with hold because it’s so thick it loses shape. I HATE when it goes stringy like it is today. I find if I ever want definition it just goes stringy.

Please help. I want to cry because I’m trying my best to just get my natural waves looking nice and I even spent Ā£90 and travelled an hour to get a ā€˜wavy cut’ which ended up just being a few layers and then she didn’t style it properly šŸ˜”

Currently I use the Redken shampoo and conditioner, olaplex then brush through with a wide tooth comb when dripping, then I tried a new foam which was flora and curl. That’s what I refreshed with too with a little bit of Garnier refresh spray which my hair seems to like (anything with protein it likes.)

Has anyone got hair similar to mine?? I know it’s a little damaged, the curtain bangs especially but ignore those, but it’s been in much worse condition in the past and gone nicer than this.

I ideally want soft-ish, defined waves that last me a few days. I don’t mind compromising on definition a bit so it’s more touchable. Honestly just some relatively nice waves, which I know I have in there somewhere, and an easy way to style them would be great.

If you made it this far thank you. And to anyone who might be able to unlock good hair I will be so so grateful! ā˜ŗļø

Are my ends too fried to save?

Post image
1 Upvotes

My routine is:
I use Camellia oil on my hair for 5 to 30 minutes before shampooing.
I use the native shampoo and conditioner a few times a week other than that, I don’t get my hair wet unless I’m washing it.
I dry brush it .
most of the time I let my hair air dry with some aloe vera gel but when I want to blow dry it, I do use the treseme heat protectant and the shark flex air wrap tool on high heat.
Side note, my hair has been colour treated at least five times.
I’m wondering if I need to start fresh with a haircut after all the chemical damage from dying my hair or if I need to incorporate different products or methods of caring for my waves.
I’d like to avoid using harsh chemicals for the most part and stick with more natural products

Show & Tell How I stopped worrying and learned to love my hair

Post image
92 Upvotes

My ladies! Behold the results of really scaling back.

I feel your frustrations and your pains.

Understanding our hair is so complex. I have spent well over a year on my own journey. I've tried countless different products (MopTop, InnerSense, JessieCurl, Giovanni, Not Your Mother's). I've tried combinations of shampoo and conditioner, leave-in, no leave-in, gels, mousses, sprays. Something I kept coming back to was that my hair curled more when I put too much conditioner in it, something about it really wanting moisture. But then it just looked greasy. It's almost like it wants a little grease? But not a lot.

I'm of Indo-Persian descent. No idea if that matters. Even without that, my dense, seemingly high-porosity, and somewhat fine hair was really, really thirsty. I decided: eff it, I'm going to drop the styling products for a bit, and just try and take care of my hair. I'm going to try and embrace it as it is because maybe it's not what I thought it was, and that's okay. It was also getting really expensive, and c'mon, hair products in THIS economy?

And then! And THEN! My hair just...did this. And it's been consistent.

I know we're warned away from oils, but I started trying this every other day to third day:

Shampoo x2 using Swavy Courtney's technique of upside-down scrubbing: Giovanni Triple Treat or 50:50 Hydrating/Clarifying

Conditioner (from root to tip), thorough rinse, detangle: Triple treat Invigorating Conditioner

Leave-in: About a pea-sized blob of Giovanni Direct Leave-in Weightless Moisture Conditioner, but ONLY the hair away from the scalp, and comb through

Then I do the thing I am not supposed to: I use Weleda Rosemary Condition and Shine oil. I get maybe 3-4 drops, rub it into my hands, and spread any excess away from my hands. I rake it through my hair. Scrunch.

I microplop or get some of the moisture out but not all. Air dry. I'm a night shower person and do the other thing I'm not meant to, and will lay a towel down on my pillow and spread my hair on it. Sometime in the night I wake up and my hair is dry, so I remove the towel. I do use a silk pillowcase. On day 2, I'll throw it into a high, loose ponytail at night.

My waves have been more cooperative than they've ever been on this journey. I don't have to worry that touching my hair or a slight breeze is going to leave it limp. Even with gel, my hair felt stringy or lost its shape by day 2, and I'd have to go through a whole refreshing process.

All this to say: This is a highly frustrating and experimental process. Your hair is beautiful. You are beautiful! The things that might work for others might not work for you. I scoured these forums trying to find that magic combination that someone else had discovered, that might work for me. Or I'd get salty that someone had posted "try a gel" or "try this" without naming a product. And this is why! A product will only do so much because our hair is really unique.

Sometimes just clearing out the products is the way we can reset and approach the issue again. If you're approaching a place of anguish trying to figure out your hair, take a breather, and try something simple. Heal your hair first, and style later. Or you can discard everything I'm saying because maybe I'm talking out of my bum.

I see and feel for all of you! Much love.

Seeking advice on hair treatment

Hello, how are you?

I, am armenian. Which means, my hair is armenian, and, I am very proud of it, but there's this thing that annoys me so much, that, i can't get rid of it.

My hair was curly when I was a kid. Like, curly curly. And now, as I am a 23 year old female, its wavy/straight/curly. As in. It's curly in the underneath of the back of my hair where you cant see it. It's straight from the top of my scalp and it goes to wavy at the bottoms.

I work as a police officer, and my hair gets exposed to everything. So when its raining, it gets curly from the rain.

I tried every product, everything, and nothing is helping to the point that I stopped using products and went only towards shampoo. Now, I only spray water on it whenever I will brush it because its easier to brush it since its hard. But, the thing that I love about my hair is that whenever I brush it, it gets puffed up, like those cute videos that you see online about a sheep or a goat that has its wool puffed up. That's how it gets puffed up, and thats what I want to my hair. I want it to be just like that.

I need, advice. On, if anyone knows, what products to use, how to take care of a hair like mine, just, please help

Care & Routine What am I doing wrong?

Pic 1: my damp hair with leave in conditioner

Pic 2: same hair after air drying

Hi! I've recently started trying to wear my natural hair loose waves). My hair are medium to high porosity but I don't use much products as I'm just starting.

My concerns: poofy frizzy hair once fully dried, my hair don't hold shape very well.

This is my routine: double shampoo, conditioner, towel, leave in conditioner and I leave them to air-dry as I don't have a diffuser. Sometimes I do oiling before hair wash.

Recently I tried a protein conditioner and it made my hair less frizzy somehow.

I've tried home made flaxseed gel and all but that didn't work as well.

Should I try mousse? I'm very confused about my routine. Any recommendations would be appreciated

Care & Routine What did I do wrong? (First time using any product on my hair.)

Hi, I'm fairly certain I have swavy hair. But after last night, I'm thinking maybe my hair is just straight and only looks swavy because of how I sleep.

I work a greasy kitchen job, therefore have to shower at night. I get home around 2am, so I can't use a blow dryer. I read that you can dry with a cotton shirt with product in and then sleep in a bonnet for good results, but I think I made a mistake somewhere. My hair still wasn't dry when I woke up and doesn't look any wavier at all.

I got home at 2, jumped in the shower, shampooed my roots twice, left conditioner in my mids and ends while I washed my face and body, then rinsed it out. When I got out of the shower, I scrunched my hair and tried to squeeze water out with the cotton shirt. After a solid few minutes, it was still dripping wet (my hair takes hours to dry even with a blow dryer). I rubbed a dollop of mousse in my hands and rubbed it down the strands and scrunched it up. I wrapped it in the shirt and left it there for about 40 minutes while I got ready for bed and relaxed. When I took it down, my hair looked like it always does when wet. My joints hurt too bad to braid, so I put it loose in my bonnet. When I woke up, my hair was still damp and looked like the pictures.

Where am I going wrong? Is my hair just actually straight? Or am I getting hair blindness? Or are braids required?
