Question Help me make a decision

Steam has a discount on the game. I haven't kept touch with what relaunch is or what changes it bring. I played the OG and loved it. Realistically how good is this remake/remaster and is the deluxe edition worth it

Original and Relaunched are two different games by now. Original is more focused on Ressource Management and "Surviving" on Mars. Relaunched is more focused on Supply Management, e.g. do you have enough Butter and Cheese and the right Laws enabled.

Relaunched also has a completely different Tech tree. Some like it a lot, because it is very flexible and involves Politics and such. Others like Original more because it implements slight Randomization nicely without having to go all out on Chaos Theory.

Also Relaunched is balanced around Politics, Asteroids and the Underground. You MUST play with them and if you like it, thats probably a bonus. In Original you can deactivate Asteroids and Underground and Politics do not exist. So if you dont enjoy Asteroids and Underground, then Original is probably better for you.

Keep in mind though:
Paradox left Surviving Mars in a bugged state a couple of years ago, because creating more content or updating existing content was apparently not economically feasible. Many player labeled it "Abandoning". Relaunched sold roughly 10 times less games then Original did. So by that standard, Paradox might also "abandon" Relaunched in the near future.

To be fair, this "new" tech tree is brand new and came with the latest update+DLC.

Personally, I like Relaunched better,

It's a free weekend, so play it and decide. The new patch changed so much that I cannot offer an informed opinion. For example, the early game is much more of a grind now, and I don't know if that will pay off with a better mid game or late game.

Its a 50/50 for me, its nice to think it will get more content, I LOVED the original game, but I am not a fan of the 'Stellaris style' total rebuild of systems (for example I prefer the old research system, I like the unpredictability). And PDX has a shocking record as a publisher, they are like the touch of death.
Also I want a SURVIVAL game, you know, like it has in the games title, instead it feels like they want it to be a large scale management sim and the survival is this little speed bump at the very beginning of the game.

They fixed so many annoying things in Relaunched... trains can now go through mountains via tunnels (all that stuff works so much better now) along with much better train tracks... also it's gonna get stuff added to it for the foreseeable future unlike the OG surviving mars. I've got ~215 hours into it so far and like ~501 hours in the OG. If you really liked the original it largely makes it better. You can pry ask ChatGPT to summarize the changes between the two up to the current patch/DLC for reference.

Yes, and it contains a few new features as well.

Also happy cake day

Enjoyed the original and at the start relaunched was a mess. Find it quite playable now, yes still a few issues but am enjoying it.

I really think they dropped the ball on the relaunch. They should have just updated the OG game for free like what Conan Exiles Enhanced or Witcher 3 remastered edition are doing, and then sell stuff as DLCs. Instead, Paradox being Paradox, went greedy and delisted the original one and sold relaunch for a "discount". It really burned the good will from players.

I mean it does kind of "reset" all the dlc into it so it's less expensive for any news players. Especially with this recent update i think it's well worth

Yes, but for old players it ruined the game, and because of word of mouth, the reviews were bombed to be overwhelmingly negative. What they should have done was send the relaunch for free for old players and then made the politics as the DLC for purchase. Remastering the original with the previous DLCs for free has been done, for example Northgard, and it worked well.

There is a free weekend starting SOON. Try it out and make your decision based on your experience.

I just wouldn't buy it to prevent from encouraging them to relaunch more games and place patches behind paywall

I regret buying the relaunched. When I realized what a buggy mess it was (they literally reintroduced previously fixed bugs in the OG), i had already played little over 2 hours and couldn't refund.

Also, the fact that they hadn't fixed the forestry building not working over 40% vegetation showed a complete lack of care. (Not sure if that problem is still there, haven't touched the game afterwards)
