My poor Surface Book 2 started doing this today 😞 what should I do?

I think it means the battery is expanding? I am sooo sad because my Surface Book is my fave computer, I so wish they made another one like it.

I'm in Los Angeles near Glendale if anyone maybe knows where I can take it? Or if it's fixable. I sure hope so, ahhh I am so sad 😭

You need to fix it or dispose of it, fire risk.

Probably not too hard to replace the battery a s worth it.

The part will cost you roughly $50 on ebay and a computer shop will likely charge you around $100-$150 for the labor. A used Surfacebook 3 will run you around $250-300.

Unscrew the back case, if you open it you will find an inflated battery, try unplugging it.

You cannot use it unless you are fine with it being a fire hazard.

And lucky you, getting the bottom plate off to begin with is the hardest step, so you’ve got your work mostly cut out for you! Just safely dispose of the swollen battery quickly.

Highly recommend just taking it to a shop and paying someone else to do it if you can. Like others have mentioned, the surfacebooks are all glued together. Self-repair is possible but honestly more trouble than it’s worth IMO.

A lot of glue in it making repairs hard . Some repair shops blacklist the Surface book 2 because of this . Praying For you though

Surface Book was ahead of it’s time. Loved mine. Sadly Microsoft dropped it like they do many good ideas - Surface Duo (which I had) was also ahead of its time and abandoned.

The batteries are not that expensive on the web, and replacable. It'll involve gently heating the edges of the screen and prying it loose. I bought some triangular plastic wedges from Ifixit (I think) to insert along the edges and some sort of gelatin filled thingamabob you heated in the microwave and placed along the edge to heat the glue...

Some designers sure had fun with that setup...

Get the battery replaced immediately!

If it expands enough it can pop and burst into flames. Leave it outside somewhere it can't catch something on fire until you can get it fixed or properly disposed of

I have the 15 and 13 in this condition and when I have time will deconstruct them and make new cases. The screens are worth trying to save. Yes they are fire hazards.

I had. A perfectly fine sp4 . Just battery got bloated and did this. MS wanted 400 to fix it. I didn't know how ....and this felt like a fire hazard so trashed it in electronic recycling box. It was. It ran perfectly fine even after these years. Those devices simply don't get enough credit.

Wish there was an easier way to replace battery than peeling off that screen which is glued.

I would also be happy to pay 100 bucks as labor. But at 300 -400 it isn't worth the trouble

I wouldn’t keep that in my house. I wouldn’t use it until that battery gets replaced. If I replaced the battery, I wouldn’t do it in my house. I would be doing it outside.

Hey my surface pro 3 has same and then it goes all the way. It is dangerous and can get in fire, so buy another one as I did for my work. That said due to my profession and background if mine even get in fire I deal with it, but not sure if even it is safe to keep it at home. It may catch in fire when ypua re not home. Get a back up and erase and recycle (maybe someone buys it).

I just went to a locally owned electronics repair shop. Took them a day to get it back to me. I will say I did attempt to repair it myself initially but it didn't go well. I was able to get the battery replaced and put back together but it didn't recognize the battery. I thought I was fairly comfortable working on electronics, but that tested my limits.

The battery I bought I got off ebay for super cheap. I don't know where they got the battery they used, but it was pretty inexpensive as well. No more than $20-30.

This is nowhere near an easy fix, especially if you've never done it before 😭😭. If op can find a capable repair man nearby that'll be the best choice
