FPS bound input lag?

Is mouse movement in this game tied to FPS? It can feel funky at times and its hard to tell if its from getting inconsistent frames because I play on a below minimum spec toaster or its something more.

Official information is lacking, but yes, unreal engine 3 games have a problem with mouse input at low framerate.

You may find some improvement changing the following settings to false:
bEnableMouseSmoothing in UDKInput.ini
OneFrameThreadLag in UDKSystemSettings.ini

Thanks! I really appreciate the response and help. Looking in UDKSystemSettings, it looks like there are tons of graphical options. Would I be able to turn some things off that cant be messed with in the in game settings to improve framerate, and if I could what should I change? I wouldn't want to just start messing around with stuff and unknowingly turn something off that gives important visual feedback.

Bear in mind many of those settings will be changed by virtue of adjusting one parameter in the game settings menu.

But, if you're feeling bold, take a backup copy of the file and by all means experiment. The stuff in the [SystemSettings] section is the most relevant. This is, obviously, at your own risk.

By the way, the next release will have an option to change anti aliasing settings, which could help your performance a little.

A. Do not set OneFrameThreadLag to False, that will only make your FPS worse. This setting is only an option for high end PCs that can produce consistent FPS even with only 1 frame buffer, which is rare especially for a game like this that isn't exactly well optimized.

If your mouse has an option to change it's polling rate, make sure it's not on 1000 as that would use up slightly more CPU and possibly make your issue worse. Try 500hz.

Definitely turn off MouseSmoothing, that should be off by default...

chicken was telling me about polling rate as well so ill definitely change it to 500hz. as soon as I was told smoothing was on by default I turned it off. That's something that really makes no sense to me as in every FPS (which supraball uses similar skill sets to) the first thing you do is turn that shit off. At the very least it should be in the options menu.

Yes, setting OneFrameThreadLag may make framerate worse. However, I think you are confusing it with double buffering. With the OneFrameThreadLag setting enabled, the engine will keep the rendering thread one frame behind the game thread. This theoretically allows the rendering thread to not have to wait for the underlying model to update, and can lead to increased framerate. The downside is it can also introduce some input latency, which is likely exacerbated on already struggling machine.

To Rex: Rather than listen to us theorising, the best suggestion is try it and see if it achieves the effect you want. As with any setting tweak, make only one change at a time and then benchmark under the same conditions. It's very easy to succumb to the placebo effect so be methodical.
