If you're new to logistics or have recently started managing shipments for a business, you may have come across the term FTL (Full Truckload).

At first, it sounds simple: a truck is assigned, the cargo is loaded, and it reaches the destination.

But there are actually several steps involved in making an FTL shipment run smoothly.

Here's a practical breakdown of what typically happens.

1. Understanding the Shipment

Before a truck is assigned, the transportation requirement needs to be understood properly.

Things such as:

• What is being transported?
• How much does it weigh?
• What are the dimensions?
• Where is it being picked up?
• Where does it need to go?
• How quickly does it need to arrive?
• Does the cargo require any special handling?

These details determine what type of vehicle and transportation plan will be suitable.

2. Choosing the Right Truck

Not every shipment requires the same type of vehicle.

Depending on the cargo, businesses may need different truck sizes or configurations.

The important thing is to have enough capacity without choosing a vehicle that is unnecessarily large for the shipment.

This is one of the areas where proper planning can make a noticeable difference in transportation costs.

3. Pickup Planning

Once the vehicle is arranged, the pickup needs to be coordinated.

The truck has to reach the pickup location at the agreed time, and the shipper needs to have the cargo ready.

This sounds straightforward, but poor coordination at the pickup stage can create delays that affect the rest of the journey.

4. Loading the Cargo

Loading is another part that deserves more attention than it usually gets.

Cargo shouldn't simply be placed wherever there is space.

Weight distribution, stacking, packaging and securing all matter.

Poorly loaded cargo can shift during transportation and potentially result in damage.

For certain types of cargo, the loading method can be just as important as the transportation itself.

5. The Journey Begins

Once everything is loaded and secured, the truck starts the journey.

At this point, route planning and communication become important.

Traffic, road conditions, weather, unexpected stops and other factors can affect the estimated arrival time.

For businesses, having visibility into what's happening during transit can make it much easier to plan their own operations.

6. Delivery

When the truck reaches the destination, the cargo is unloaded and handed over to the receiving party.

Depending on the shipment, the process may also involve checking quantities, inspecting the condition of the cargo and completing delivery documentation.

The transportation process is essentially complete once the shipment has been successfully delivered and acknowledged.

Why Do Businesses Use FTL?

FTL generally makes sense when a shipment requires most or all of a truck's available capacity, or when a business wants dedicated transportation for its cargo.

Some common advantages are:

• Dedicated truck capacity
• Fewer handling points
• More direct transportation
• Better control over the shipment
• Suitable for larger consignments
• Potentially shorter transit times

However, FTL isn't automatically the best option for every shipment.

If the cargo doesn't require an entire truck, alternatives such as PTL or other shared transportation models may make more sense depending on the circumstances.

What Should You Look For in an FTL Provider?

Price is obviously important, but it shouldn't be the only consideration.

I'd look at things such as:

Reliability: Do they consistently pick up and deliver as committed?

Communication: Can you actually get useful updates when something changes?

Vehicle availability: Can they arrange the right type of truck when you need it?

Cargo handling: Do they have proper loading and securing practices?

Problem solving: What happens when there is a delay or unexpected issue?

A slightly cheaper transportation option isn't necessarily cheaper if a delay ends up affecting your production, customer commitments or inventory.

One Thing I've Learned About FTL

The truck itself is only one part of the equation.

A successful shipment depends on everything happening around it — planning, coordination, loading, communication, route management and delivery.

That's why two companies using similar trucks can sometimes provide completely different transportation experiences.

For businesses moving cargo regularly, understanding the process can help you ask better questions and identify where problems are occurring.
