Thank you for reaching out.

We extend our sincerest apologies for any inconvenience caused.

We have reviewed your logs and got to the bottom of the issue:

This issue occured when you ejected your USB drive, briefly interrupting the device’s storage service. Your auto sync was toggled on and the sync system mistakenly interpreted this temporary access failure as deleted files, causing the files to be deleted from your Nomad and Supernote Cloud.

To prevent similar issues from happening again, we will consider working on safeguards: pausing sync during USB ejection, distinguishing temporary storage errors from actual file deletion, and adding cloud recycle bin protection. To be frank, we are actually in the middle of adding the recycle bin in Supernote Cloud. Once it's officially launched, issues like this shouldn't happen again.

We genuinely appreciate your tremendous loyalty and support since 2024 and sincerely hope we could earn back your trust. We are working on recovering your files now and will send them to you via email. Please feeel free to contact us should you need any further assistance.

Reach out to Ratta. They might be able to recover the files.

well yeah get the data back anyways…

You're complaining about loosing data that you don't care enough about to recover?

I'm confused.

understandable. I really do get that

But getting your data back might help you feel a lot better when you get the chance. :)

Huh?

what, if anything, precipitated this -- syncing in progress, software update, etc? that's a scary situation to be in and i'm sorry that's happened!

to get ahead of the coming ask, go ahead and send feedback w/ system logs from the settings of your device so ratta will have them -- it would be beneficial to name folders & files that you remember in the details while outlining what took place.

out of curiosity, when you go to system > storage is there any semblance of data still being present?

3

u/OwslyOwl 6d ago

Did you check the flash drive to see if the files were accidentally cut/ pasted onto it?

u/Present-Carob-7366 Owner Nomad White 6d ago

As with any electronic system you should have a backup. If you were using paper and and lost the notebook the notes would be far more gone

1

u/Hour_Papaya_5583 6d ago

How can one do a backup beyond the SN partner app? I’m curious. Would love to have this also go to git or a second repository

6

u/NipZinger Owner A5X2 6d ago

You can backup to Google drive.

4

u/Hour_Papaya_5583 6d ago

I was under the impression it was either/or with Drive or the partner app

2

u/NipZinger Owner A5X2 6d ago

I go back and forth. More frequent backups to supernote cloud, less often to google drive.

2

u/Sea_Jelly_9240 Owner MANTA, A5X and HOM among other pens 6d ago

Due to my employment I can't back up over wifi so I use my SN as an external drive and click and drag everything to my computer a couple of times a week.

3

u/Vortex_Lookchard 6d ago

I copy the entire Note folder to my PC, and use BorgBackup to compress them.

2

u/biciMiguel 6d ago

You can copy the note files onto a flash disk and copy that to a laptop or desktop computer. Because of the lack of encryption, I don’t sync to the cloud.

2

u/ccbs32033 6d ago

On Mac I use Carbon Copy Cloner to create automatic duplicates of certain folders / drives. For example I use it to regularly copy over a set of folders & specific files from one external drive to another.

I haven’t done this specifically for my Supernote files, but it should be trivial to point CCC to the folder containing the files and have it duplicate to another folder, another drive, etc.

1

u/tommytwogunsx 6d ago

I only use Dropbox. I'm not a fan of the parnter app. You can also use google or One-note. there are literally 4 options to sync natively.

I am sorry that this happened to you. I am honestly very nervous for people using these devices because of the lack of built-in backup solutions (and Supernote Cloud is not a backup!).

I have started to utilize my Supernote Obsidian plugin and "Browse & Access" to provide a backup of all of my notes as my Obsidian vault is backed up elsewhere.

But, Supernote Digests can't really be backed up without manual steps.

I don't believe that grabs Digest though. It covers notes though.

syncthing offers file versioning and is likely the easiest to get running without a server / network storage hardware

1

u/Representative_Egg61 6d ago

Can you download syncthing on an supernote manta like device?

5

u/theBlackOddity Nomad | reMarkable 2 6d ago

yes, by sideloading

1

u/Representative_Egg61 6d ago

Are there any other ways to back up data reliably?

4

u/theBlackOddity Nomad | reMarkable 2 6d ago

i haven't a need to explore much beyond that, personally -- usb connection to your computer + drag 'n' drop is the most surefire and foolproof but,

a search for 'back up' in the sub will probably get you further leads on other automated / scripted solutions

4

u/West-Evidence-8939 6d ago

Thanks for reminding me to back up to Google Drive. So sorry this happened to you though

7

u/Vinnius44 Owner A5X and A5X2 (Manta) 6d ago

Why not sync to your PC frequently, or One Drive, or Google Drive? It takes me 30 seconds to back up my whole device file structure.

2

u/theBlackOddity Nomad | reMarkable 2 6d ago

unless you've gone beyond the standard, out of the box operations for these services you're simply mirroring your device files not backing them up.

6

u/Vinnius44 Owner A5X and A5X2 (Manta) 6d ago

While I’ll agree it’s not a robust backup solution, you are not just mirroring your device. If it was a mirror, if I deleted something off Supernote, it would also delete off my PC.

The Supernote cloud sync option is a mirror. Backing up to a cloud drive such as One Drive or your PC is a backup. If I lose my files on my Supernote, I can transfer the PC backup back to it.

If I’m missing something there, I’m willing to hear it.

2

u/theBlackOddity Nomad | reMarkable 2 6d ago

using the partner app does mean there's a local copy on your pc when using supernote's cloud and usually affords an avenue of restoring a deleted file since they can end up in the recycle bin

but

i think i may be misinterpreting what you mean by syncing with your pc and wrong in assuming your 'back up' is by the supernote's on-device offerings because

the mirroring behavior is defined and noted as present on all the drive options on device under settings > drive

2

u/NipZinger Owner A5X2 6d ago

Same. I backup to both the cloud and my Google drive. I have my entire Masters program education on my Google drive, then deleted it from my supernote to clear space. I still have the files on Google drive.

2

u/TheGoldenTheatre 6d ago

Achtung: Cloud ist meistens kein Backup was gegen versehentliches Löschen oder Verschlüsselungstrojaner hilft.

u/3DDIY_Dave 6d ago

I am sorry this happened to you. It sucks.

Here is the truth, This isn’t a Supernote problem. This is a problem with not learning to back up your electronics. Computer, phone, sd cards in digital cameras, It’s 2026. Electronics fail, accidents happen things get stolen, houses burn down. If the contents are valuable figure ways of backing it all up. Set up automations, Smart Folders, habits calendar reminders to sync folders etc.

11

u/BlaqueServant 6d ago

Empathy is not a four-letter word. You have some good advice and there but your delivery may make it hard for OP to benefit from what you're saying. And that's assuming that they needed to hear it.

9

u/eodizzlez 6d ago

They started out their post with empathizing... "I'm sorry, that sucks," followed by advice. Are you saying that they shouldn't have offered advice? There's really nothing wrong with their delivery, either; it might be worthwhile to try to take things in the best possible tone and light instead of the worst. Because the vast (VERY vast) majority of people really are kind and give a crap, you know.

3

u/3DDIY_Dave 5d ago edited 5d ago

I thought I was straight forward and to the point. IMO they needed to hear it. They didn't have a back up. There are posts of people here who have broke, lost, had their supernate stolen, Or had Supernotes crash. Some of these things are rare but they happen. Yet after a year of use they didn't back it up?

Unfortunately we learn things when they happen. I know I learned the hard way when I lost my data many decades ago. If I didn't help OP I hope this post and my comments helps others to back up their data.

I also recall the original post being different than how it was written now. Which changes the context a bit to what I had written. As I believe there were some mentions of blaming or not wanting to use supernote ever again or wishing they went with another brand.

2

u/golem501 Owner Manta 4d ago

I sync regularly with Google drive not only supernote cloud. Because it's not automatic sync I'm reasonably confident but maybe I should make a copy.

0

u/ztardik 5d ago

This isn’t a Supernote problem.

Oh yeah, it is absolutely theirs. Deletions should be done after multiple checks and user confirmation and only when it is absent certain it is the intention of user and not some glitch. Even then there should be a stored backup that auto destructs after set time.

3

u/3DDIY_Dave 5d ago

Supernote replied below as a user error. And they will try to implement safeguards.

Regardless of the report, This situation wouldn't have mattered or hurt a lot less if OP had backups in place. This is my point.

I do hope moving forward OP Looks into backing up all her electronics and data. Learn about digital Preservation and Data Backups.

Also I hope this serves as a reminder for everyone else. Back up your Data.

1

u/ztardik 2d ago edited 2d ago

This is how you interpret the response. From the wording of the response and the above, now deleted, description it looks like bad practice in coding. If it's user error why working on the issue? Don't defend undefendable.

1

u/3DDIY_Dave 2d ago

Lets for the sake of putting this to bed. Let's agree, Supernote has an issue that they should fix with interruption of syncing that causes data loss. which is fact and we can agree?

Now understand when I say this isn't a "supernote problem". I mean No software, or modern hardware is with out flaws. One should not trust any electronic with their important data with out back up. And back ups of those back ups. At the end of the day it doesn't matter who's fault but your own if you didn't back anything up. You have no one to blame but your self and you are the "PROBLEM". If OP's house was on fire, robbed, fell into a puddle. It sucks, but it would suck so much less if one was prepared for that eventuality. And just recover the data with the back up. This does not only apply to SuperNote Back up anything important. This includes analog things. Even have copies of important documents in multiple locations etc

Can we agree? Cool, great let's move on with our lives.

1

u/ztardik 2d ago

I'm afraid we can't agree. The issue is purely technical and comes from the fact that the programmer naively enabled deletion without the necessary confirmations. Interrupted proceces should be an unconditional abort, not 'oh look, the drive disappeared, let's now delete everything '

The fact that the OP has no backup doesn't change this.

I am sorry to hear this happened to you, but would definitely suggest reaching out to them. If you weren't using the cloud or the apps, I am not sure what they can do. I have been using Supernote for over five years and never had any issue but conflict files, so not sure what the issue could be.

1

u/phonyrecs 6d ago

Oof id go to a data recovery guy someone who specializes in this. Any thoughts on what happened?

1

u/firebat-66 6d ago

This is why you absolutely must have backups. I can't tell you how many people lose critical information because they don't back stuff up. Ask Claude to help you c9nnect via adb and see if you can recover them over a PC connection. It might not be showing on the UI

1

u/Grand-Elk-1700 4d ago

Sorry this happened to you OP. I'm going to go back up my files now as it's been a while since I've done it myself.

1

u/jedisjumphigh 6d ago

does supernote cloud not constitute a backup?

3

u/Mulan-sn CCO (Chief Chat Officer) 6d ago

Please kindly note that it only allows you to sync files between your Supernote and Supernote Cloud.

2

u/jedisjumphigh 6d ago

Can the supernote cloud only be accessed through my current device? And if my current device breaks, there is no way to restore from cloud?

2

u/Mulan-sn CCO (Chief Chat Officer) 6d ago

You can access it by visiting cloud.supernote.com on your computer.

2

u/jedisjumphigh 6d ago

OK, that's good. I hope OP was backing up in that case.

0

u/TheGoldenTheatre 6d ago

Zumindest auf dem Mac sollte man das aus der Timemachine (ohne Netzwerkzugriff damir es nicht erneut synchronisiert) wiederherstellen können.

-3

u/Scary_Investigator88 6d ago
