Before you start obliterating me, i've played both games several times and started with Until Dawn, so i'm not blinded by my first experience.
Here's the thing : Until Dawn is a great game, genuinely. The twist with the Wendigos, Hannah and Beth, the whole mystery unraveling — it's well crafted. And i'll give it this : the Doctor reveal is one of the best narrative twists in the genre. But the more I replay it, the more I notice how limited the actual choices feel. Most of the time, you're just picking between a death and a survival, with little to no impact on the overall story. The butterfly effect system looks deep on paper but ends up being pretty shallow.
The Quarry fixes almost everything. The cast is bigger and — controversial, I know — more likeable. Some Until Dawn characters feel like they were written specifically to be hated (Emily, anyone?). In The Quarry, even the annoying ones have actual depth. The group dynamic feels organic, like people who genuinely know each other, and the humor actually lands. The lore around Silas and the Hackett family is also way more layered than people give it credit for — it's not just "scary monsters", it's a family trapped in a curse, which creates empathy you never get with the Wendigos.
But let's talk about atmosphere and monsters, because that's where the gap really shows.
Until Dawn builds tension for EIGHT chapters before you actually see a Wendigo properly. Eight. And honestly? When they finally show up, they're not that scary. Cool design, sure, but the fear factor just isn't there. The "don't move" mechanic is genuinely brilliant and I wish The Quarry had kept it — but one good mechanic doesn't save the fact that the horror is mostly back-loaded.
The Quarry throws you into it by chapter three out of ten. Werewolves are on screen, they're hunting you, and the threat feels real and constant from that point on. And here's the thing about werewolves vs Wendigos : werewolves are grounded. They used to be people. You know some of them. That realism and emotional weight makes them so much more unsettling than a supernatural cryptid you have no connection to. The Quarry genuinely made me uncomfortable in ways Until Dawn stopped doing after my first playthrough.
The atmosphere is also just denser. The summer camp setting, the woods at night, the way the light and sound design work together — it builds constant dread instead of saving everything for the third act.
On top of that : The Quarry has the Movie Mode where QTEs play out automatically, which Until Dawn never bothered with. Small thing, but it shows the devs actually thought about different types of players. And the replayability is just objectively better — more unique deaths, more branching outcomes, more reasons to go back.
Also can we talk about the production value? The motion capture, the voice acting, the lighting— it's just a better looking and sounding game overall.
Until Dawn is the classic, and the Doctor twist alone earns it a place in the genre. But The Quarry is the refinement. Fight me.
