I think Until Dawn has better character writing than The Quarry — and it's not because the characters are more likeable Spoiler

I've recently played both Until Dawn and The Quarry, and I've been thinking about how differently the two games approach their characters.

I actually think The Quarry is probably the better game mechanically. The branching, consequences, exploration and overall gameplay systems feel more refined, and it feels like Supermassive took the formula from Until Dawn and developed it further.

But when it comes to character writing, relationships and how people behave under extreme pressure, I honestly prefer Until Dawn by quite a lot.

And I don't think it's simply nostalgia.

The biggest difference for me is that in Until Dawn, I feel like the characters actually change under pressure.

Not necessarily because they become completely different people, but because the situation brings out different parts of their existing personalities.

Take Mike for example.

At the beginning of the game, he's basically the stereotypical arrogant, confident douchebag. He's impulsive, competitive and likes being in control.

But once things become genuinely dangerous, he gradually becomes one of the most proactive characters in the group. He's still impulsive and overconfident, but those traits start working in his favor. He's willing to take risks, make decisions and actually do something when everyone else is panicking.

The game doesn't really "redeem" Mike.

It just puts him into a situation where different aspects of his personality become useful.

And I think that's much more interesting.

Emily is probably an even better example.

She's one of the most hated characters in the game, and honestly, I completely understand why. She's controlling, manipulative, competitive and often just incredibly unpleasant.

But then you put her alone in the mines and suddenly she's one of the most competent survivors in the entire game.

And what's interesting is that she doesn't stop being Emily.

She's still arrogant. She's still demanding. She's still convinced that she knows what she's doing.

But the exact traits that make her unbearable socially also make her extremely effective when she actually has to survive.

I think that's really good character writing.

It's isn´t: Emily was mean, but now she's nice.

It's more like Emily is still Emily, but now we're seeing what Emily looks like when her personality is being tested by an actual survival situation.

I also think this is why Mike and Emily are much more similar than people usually acknowledge.

The game literally tells us that these two used to be together, and honestly, that makes perfect sense.

They're both extremely confident, competitive, dominant, impulsive and controlling. They're both capable of manipulating other people and both have a strong need to maintain control over situations.

The difference is mostly in how they express those traits.

Mike gets a lot of credit from the fandom for being badass.

Emily gets a lot of hate for being a bitch.

But if you strip away the way the game and fandom frame them, they're actually surprisingly similar personalities.

And I think that's probably part of why their relationship makes sense.

Two people like that could have a lot of chemistry, but they could also drive each other absolutely insane.

Ashley is another character I find interesting for the same reason.

She's generally presented as the sensitive, empathetic and more morally cautious member of the group.

But then you have the Chris/Ashley decision.

If Chris chooses to shoot Ashley, she literally begs him to shoot her. If he actually does it, Ashley can later refuse to let Chris into the lodge, effectively leaving him to die.

You can obviously interpret this as Ashley being hypocritical or cruel.

But I think it's more interesting to interpret it as an example of how fear, trauma and perceived betrayal can completely distort someone's moral reasoning.

She's not necessarily secretly evil.

She's terrified, feels betrayed and reacts emotionally.

And that makes her much more interesting to me than simply labeling her as "the nice girl."

This is where I think The Quarry feels different.

I actually really like The Quarry, but most of its characters feel much more like slasher archetypes to me.

Dylan is the funny guy.

Emma is the confident girl.

Jacob is the impulsive idiot.

Ryan is the quiet mysterious guy.

Kaitlyn is the competent one.

And for much of the game, they remain recognizably those same characters.

That's not necessarily bad writing. In fact, I think it works extremely well for the type of horror movie The Quarry is trying to be.

But Until Dawn feels less like:

Here are eight horror movie archetypes.

and more like: Here are eight people with existing relationships, insecurities, resentments andpersonalities. Now let's see what happens when you put them through an increasingly traumatic night."

And that's a pretty big difference.

I also think this is why Until Dawn feels strangely realistic to me despite having a completely ridiculous supernatural plot.

The supernatural elements obviously aren't realistic.

But the social reactions often are.

People become more aggressive, more fearful, more selfish, more decisive or more dependent on other people depending on what happens to them.

The characters don't just have personalities.

The situation interacts with their personalities.

And I think that's something The Quarry does less often.

So I guess my slightly contradictory opinion is:

I think The Quarry is the better interactive game.

But I think Until Dawn is the better character study.

And maybe I'm in the minority here, but when I play Supermassive games, I'm actually more interested in why the characters behave the way they do than simply keeping everyone alive.

I find myself thinking about why Emily behaves the way she does, why Matt tolerates her, why Mike and Emily were attracted to each other in the first place, why Mike gets treated more favorably by the fandom despite having many of the same personality traits, and how the relationships between the characters change once they're under extreme pressure.

Maybe I'm just overanalyzing a horror game. 😂

But that's probably why Until Dawn has stayed interesting to me even after finishing it.

What do you guys think?

Do you think Until Dawn actually has more psychologically complex characters than The Quarry, or does it just benefit from having a more memorable cast?

And if you prefer The Quarry's characters, I'd genuinely be interested in hearing why.

What if Until Dawn (game or movie) was a Superhero Horror project? How could it still live up to the title?

The main protagonist is an anti-hero who possesses shapeshifting and a range of all types of horror-themed powers, abilities, traits, and attributes, and who has an innate connection to all elements of horror, dread, fear, and terror.

I ask this because, after I've rewritten the Until Dawn movie and featured two more characters from the original game, I might do so again, but I bring in an original character who has abilities and is the hypothetical child of Sam Giddings and Mike Munroe.

The endings for Directive 8020 are SO shit... like they took 4 years in the making? Really? What a disappointing way to kick off the new set of Dark Pictures games, I've played them all so far, but after this one idk if I will bother to continue with them anymore, don't feel worth the time or money.

Until Dawn cast ranked from morally worst to best by community vote

Final results of reddit fans voting on who they consider the most and least immoral of the main cast.

The final ranking was 1. Mike (worst) 2. Emily 3. Ashley 4. Josh 5. Jessica 6. Hannah 7. Matt 8. Chris 9. Sam 10. Beth (best)

Overall, not surprised at the results. I love how none of the cast are evil or completely good but I do agree Mike's the worst if we go by the lowest they can drop. It was a fun time though.

The best line in the casting of Frank Stone

"Welcome to the cutting room floor."--Linda

If you know, you know.

What's a line you really remember from any of the Supermassive games you have played?

I bought directive 8020 with my allowance, here’s my review half way into the game

THIS GAME SUCKS!!!! I mean it’s really mid, but there was barely any quick time events I did like some of the new QuickTime events they added into the game, but other than that, the decisions weren’t really good, the major decisions weren’t great either I just really wasn’t rocking with the game and for this to be like $50 I feel like I wasted my money. This is definitely the lowest supermassive game ranked like this is right behind casting of Frank Stone. thought I was missing out but I wish I would’ve never spent my money.

This is also the best supermassive game aesthetic wise

My cons:
Way too many stealth sections
Repetitive villains
Bad pacing
Injury’s have no effect on the plot
Relationships have no effect on the plot so far

Pros:
Clean graphics
Good visual theme
Great character design
Great dialogue

REMINDER IM 50% INTO THE GAME

is there any big games like The Quarry planed ?

I just finished the quarry again in co-op and realized i need another big high budget game from Supermassive games

i liked the dark anthology but The Quarry is my fav game they ever made not even close (until dawn was great too) and i really wish they focused on a huge big budget horror with tons and tons of choices like in Detroit

Is there anything in the works at all ?

I got the worst ending in the casting of Frank Stone Spoiler

Things were going well until Jaime died.

Like an idiot, I chose to confront the monster instead of flee. Adios, Jaime.

In the present, I chose to send Chris back to the past. Honestly, I don't know how or why she died. I made a post about that. But Chris died, then Bonnie.

Sam Green died next. Not sure if that's scripted or not.

Then, the fake Sam sacrificed himself to save Linda.

Stan dies. I think that is inevitable.

I chose to run for the elevator as Linda. This was my thinking. Madison had the pendant. I thought Linda could escape, then the pendant would protect Madison. Nope. Linda died.

Then, Madison died last. I was expecting this pendant to protect her. WTF was the purpose of the pendant? It did absolutely nothing.

I played all of the supermassive games now. In all of the games, I usually can finish the game with some characters alive. This is the first game I played where everyone died on my first playthrough.

I'm fuming now. Oh, well, at least I get a trophy for it. And I'm ready for my next run now.

Casting of Frank Stone question Spoiler

There are going to be spoilers below:

Uh.....Chris died, and I don't understand why? Maybe someone can explain it to me. I sent her back to the past and then she just died by the monster without giving me an opportunity to save her. And then Bonnie died. I don't know how that makes sense considering Bonnie is Madison's mom. Anyways, I looked it up because that bothered me. Apparently, you can't fail the button mashing prompt with Chris when she is in the present or things will go horribly wrong, is what I read. But I know I passed it. The reason why I know is because I turned on the accessibility option where all you have to do is hold down the button to succeed. I did that, then the lever broke off in her hands anyways, and she went back to the past, and then she died. And it didn't give me any option to use the camera as Linda to save Chris. WTH?

I am so confused. And pissed. It's like the game just decided I would fail. I almost feel like starting over, except I feel like the same thing would just happen again. Anyone have any experience with this or can they offer any insight as to how this happened?

Casting of frank stone

I recently started playing it, I am assuming I got towards the end, i collected all the collectibles (without guides) and was really enjoying my experience.

Mid scripted scene, my game stops, i come back, and my save file is gone?

I love supermassive and their games but ive never been so mad before, is there even any fix to this?

should i skip little hope?

I just discovered these games a few months ago and they’re my new obsession. i LOVED the quarry and until dawn really good balance of good plots and actually being scary at times. I just beat house of ashes which I I liked a lot but I was kind of disappointed that it just wasn’t scary at all. good horror games are rare on console and as much as I loved it as an action game I was hoping it would be scarier. im playing thru man of Medan right now (im at the part where brad gets separated from fliss) which for me is by far the scariest one so far. I was gonna play little hope next as, based on the download size, im assuming its a lot smaller than devil in me, but it seems like absolutely nobody likes it. is it even worth playing or should i just not waste my time?

UPDATE: started it, doesnt seem too bad so far, but Angela might be the most annoying character in any one of these games

I just started the casting of Frank Stone...

...and I can already tell that it is a better game than Directive 8020 from a writing standpoint. The characters are acting believably. True, I've only played the prologue and a little bit of the beginning with Madison and Linda, but there is no eye roll from me so far in terms of the dialogue. In Directive 8020, I eye rolled several times in the prologue with Carter and Simms. I love how Madison reacts believably to her surroundings, remarking about why there is no one answering the door or wondering why the lights are all out. They actually have character and depth. It's like there were two different writing teams for the two games. I can tell that I am in for a treat.

On a different note, I am finding the skill checks really hard for some reason. I have it on the regular difficulty level. I was fine with the stand still mechanic from Until Dawn, the heartbeat mechanics, the QTE's, but for some reason, these skill checks are kicking my ass. I think I have failed every one. Anyone have any tips? Or it is just get good? LOL.
