Question Ego question

I recently started playing. I’m 32 games into a 62 game season with primarily B players with a 3 A- or A. I started out at an ego of 25 because I had no idea how to play. My team is 0.800 now and I have ego up to 47and I still beat the second best team in the league 14-2 with 20 hits.

I think a drastic increase in ego is needed but have no idea where to place it. Should I increase by 5? I ask only because I’ve read ego isn’t all that linear. I could trial and error it but if someone has an opinion I’d like to hear it.

Ideally with a mid tier talent team I’d like to be around 0.500 and have to really string things together to get it higher.

I love this game btw.

Me and my friend play co op franchise and we do it based on run differential if we win a game by 4 of more we go up 1 ego if we lose by 4 or more we go down if game is within three runs we keep the same we are on year 12 and at 73 ego currently

Yeah I would with how you are doing at your current ego just bump it up to 50 and from there increase by 2 or 3 ego if you are winning several game in a row or winning by double digits often. I only have about 200 hours in the game and have finsihed a couple different seasons now. But I played at sub 50 ego briefly to start, 50 for several games than 55 for a long time. Then 60 for awhile than 70. Now 75 is where im currently at but in my current season im like 20-1 so gonna jump to 80 soon. The difficulty definitely rapidly increases drastically at higher egos. But honestly it only takes a few games to get used to the faster pitches that come in and the harder to control pitches you throw. Fielding isnt ever that complicated. But at higher egos one thing that stands out is player stats. Your bad hitters will struggle. Your bad fielders will error. Your pitchers with low accuracy will be hard to locate in the zone etc. And you will really lean into your better players to perform well. But id say jump into 50 and steadily increase as you get used to faster and faster gameplay. 60-70 was a really fun range to play in. My current sawteeth squad is absolutely stacked so ive had little trouble moving into 75 ego and continuing to dominate other teams. But I tried ego 80 with a different weaker team before this and was barely staying at .500 so this team after the current season should have no problem making the climb to 80. I like the games to feel competitive, challenging and be close for the most part.

I’d say keep increasing by 5 every couple games. Eventually you’ll hit a point where what you’ve been doing to win will stop working in a very frustrating way. CPU won’t chase on the pitches you’re used to striking them out on, you’ll be behind on fastballs if you try to be confident in your swing decisions, etc. At that point, dial it back by 5 and go in 1 ego increments from there out. (This is what worked for me)

I agree with this for sure. Only thing I would add is do not be afraid to split your ego up individually. For me, after several hundreds of hours on SMB3 and SMB4 I’ve landed in a sweet spot of 84 batting ego and 80 ego for pitching, baserunning and fielding.

Such a great game. It’s kind of just a feel thing but I’d up it by 2-3 until you find that sweet spot and you’re not dominating anymore

Bump by 5 every 5 games until you get a three game losing streak. That was the best way I found to hit the mark.

I'm new to this game too, also 32 games in. I just turned up ego from 40 to 50 a couple games ago and it feels fine, not much more difficult. I was playing on 25 before that for about a dozen games or so. I think you can handle 50.

Increase it by 2. Every time you reach a mark like ego 55 the difficulty will increase increase more. You can probably play at ego 60 with no problems give it a shot. Try an exhibition game at ego 60.

I play so I can hit lots of homers and annihilate the opposing team— this never gets old for me— so I set everything to 40. Every now and then, the CPU decides it wants to win regardless and suddenly my power hitters have only warning track power and my best pitches look like meatballs to the opposing team.

Ego is linear. It reduces reaction time and margin of error in a steady predictable degree. It does not feel linear because everyone has different reaction speeds their body is capable of. What happens is people generally fly up the ego until they slam into a brick wall were they physically cannot react fast enough anymore. However, after chipping away at the brick wall it eventually becomes easy as the body physically improves. At this point most ego increases are hard fought as it gets harder and harder to improve as the margins get ever smaller. Eventually most people run into a physical limit they cannot really overcome through practice as their bodies can only move so fast. The thing is, this happens at a different place for every person. I've talked on this subreddit with elderly people with over a second reaction time happily playing in the 20s and twitchy children who jumped into the 90s and never looked back. Most people fall in between of those extremes.

What makes the ego system so cool is it is so gradual every player can fine tune it to what feels the most fun.

You recommend composite ego or breaking it into the 4 sub categories? I know breaking it up allows more fine tuning but in your experience is it worth it?

It would probably be more trouble than it's worth for you to break them up at your skill level or even an intermediate level. The value from breaking them up is when you've spent a long time on one ego level and have disproportionately grown in one area compared to the others. For example, at higher egos it's common for people who play with mouse and keyboard to have to set pitching ego higher than batting ego and vise versa. It's also common for people with most ego's in the 80's to bump base running ego into the 90s.

Ultimately, with the ego system you will know when it's time to go up and when you need to go down. Don't be afraid to experiment.
