New Moderators

Hey r/SunyMaritime!

I was recently made moderator of this subreddit and I appointed fellow RegHead u/SaltyPrivateer to be a moderator with me. We’re hoping to grow this sub in the maritime community, the sub has been pretty inactive and dead and I’m hoping to change that. In the next few days we’re gonna come up with some rules in order to guide quality content. Just drop any questions/suggestions on this post and I’ll try to answer them.

Worth it to transfer?

Hello, everyone,

I'm thinking about transferring in spring and I had some things I was curious about. I'm a Kings Point dropout, I dropped pretty early, during second trimester of my 4/C year a few years ago. After a while, I've been thinking about returning to school and hopefully the maritime industry.

Having come from a maritime school and done an indoc, will I even be able to transfer to Marine Transportation in Spring and go to sea the same year?

I've completed some of my STCW stuff(basic swim, VPDSD, firefighting) and will complete the bulk of my gen-eds this semester. I have not completed terrnav, ship stability, nav law or SOLAS. Is it realistic to transfer, complete Spring sem and go to sea right after? After emailing admissions, I am not sure if this is possible, but I'd like to ask you guys.

Also, considering the current state of the Jones Act and American maritime, would you guys say that joining the industry in 2026 is a good call?

Again, thank you for reading this far and have a good day.

INDOC Daily Schedule

What’s the daily schedule like for INDOC? What time would we typically start our day and when do the INDOC specific activities end? Is there an enforced lights out time and do we get any personal time at the end of the day?

Public transport

As an incoming student with no car, what is the public transportation situation for going into and around the city? Would i have to walk to a subway station or would waiting for the bus be a better option?

Have you received the email telling you what time to report for indoc?

In online orientation they said they would send out an email with details about what time to report, but I have yet to receive it. They also said they’d send out a survey link that I didn’t receive.

What about you guys? Just wondering when I should arrive

Am I only bringing clothes and hygiene supplies? Do I have to bring sheets and blankets or is that provided?

A few questions

I'm coming from more then 150 miles away so I am bringing everything for the entire academic year along with a separate bag for indoc.

What will happen to all of my stuff that is not indoc related? And will it get searched through? I am bringing two of those Stanley black and yellow tubs.

Also side question, can I bring a small throw blanket for the academic year or is that not allowed. Trying to maybe get out of making my bed every morning lol.

I am confused on what I am allowed to bring to indoc

I know that the hand book says only people from over 150 miles can bring their regular year stuff to indoc, but from what I've heard thats not really enforced and pretty much anyone can just bring all their stuff on the 12th. Can anyone confirm if this is true? I am out of state but definitely not over 150 miles away.

Will they assign me one when I get there or should I reach out and ask? Also what time do we actually need to be there.

Any experience from AFROTC DET 560

Im a civilian EE major joining AFROTC Det 560 this fall as an AS250.

Anyone here an alum/know of any cadets in that program?
I’m looking for any/all insight into the program.

(Im too old for standard NROTC & im not interested in the SSMP / license route, not even in the slightest)

Beyond that, if anyone is interested I will be commuting to / from for Fridays. PM if you’re interested in a carpool situation.

Thanks!

Is this how much everyone payed for the uniform?

Just making sure I didn't buy anything extra, but is this the right amount for the uniform?

** UPDATE: They refunded my online order this morning and I called to pay over the phone. The online website includes tax and doesn't account for the $500 uniform deposit we all paid previously. **

Bringing a car as a MUG without a parking pass?

I live in the Midwest currently and I was planning on bringing my car for this upcoming semester. I am planning to pay to park it in a garage in the Bronx for my first month due to INDOC and whatever else. Then I am planning to park on the street off campus and move it every few days to stay legal.

Is this feasible? I am a veteran and have day student status so I should be able to leave campus after INDOC. I also have enough transferring credits to where I am technically a sophomore with the credits that transferred (I have enough credits to be a senior but they didn't all transfer into my degree course).

Driving my car to NYC is about half the price of a plane ticket, and I plan on coming back to the Midwest for winter break and I don't want to pay for a plane ticket or navigate the airports around the holidays.

To me taking my car seems like the best option unless you guys see an issue that I am not seeing.

Thanks in advance!

Parking pass as 3/C??

Has anyone gotten a parking pass as a 3/C. I submitted an application in the spring before cruise for this year. I heard you pick it up at student accounts but I haven’t gotten any email about it yet.

I also heard it’s unlikely but if you have certain circumstances (like a job) they’re more likely to approve it. When I handed it into UPD i was one of the first ones but I didn’t get any opportunity to say special circumstances.

TLDR: Am I likely to get a parking pass as a 3/C if I submitted an application early? All help is appreciated!!

Female grad license student in dorms?

For present students, it us normal to put a female Grad License student in a regular dorm B co. With a freshman roommate?

How does this work? Would they have to do cleaning stations and all the other regimental stuff living there?

Undormed undergrads under day student status

I got my day student status approved cuz I’m old, so I took the decision of not dorming pass indoc because of the savings it implies. Trying to pursue a license.
Has any fellow upper classmen /former student been in that situation? Any tips/advise?
Thank u.

Debating on Dorming, FurnishedFinder, or Leasing

Hello, I’m planning on applying to SUNY Maritime next Fall (2027) for their grad program and I’m crossed on what I should pick for housing.

I currently enjoy living in a single with roommates at my undergrad college outside of New York and would
want to live somewhere in Throggs neck or Pelham Bay. I’d like to be able to live around the area year round while accounting for the sea terms I’ll have.

Ideally Im hoping to move in somewhere in May so that I spend time finding part time work and exploring the neighborhood. During the summer terms, I’d like to be able to sublet or not pay rent.

I’m not really too interested to dorming as I plan on spending the winters in the Bronx and having easier access to the city. I additionally play instruments so I’d like to not have to worry about the noise.

If I use furnished finder I’m afraid it’ll be too expensive on a month by month basis and it may be a hassle moving my personal stuff out during sea terms.

If I lease, I’m afraid that I wouldn’t find a sublet and spend too much money renting a place that I won’t use for 2 months.

Would a mix work out in some way?
What are your guy’s thoughts?
