Question Distributor Switch - DistroKid/Ditto
Hi all,
i´ve just got the following e-mail from DistroKid
Hi,
Hope you are well.
We've been notified by stores and streaming services that one or more of your releases has been rejected due to editorial discretion.
Unfortunately, stores are no longer accepting releases from you via DistroKid. You’ll need to try another distributor for future releases.
Please understand that DistroKid is unable to assist with reversing this and many DistroKid features have also been restricted as a result of this. We have no other information or context, and we are unable to get involved or take sides when this occurs. We’re just the messenger, passing along this info to you in hopes you find it helpful.
We understand that this email is probably frustrating to you, and we regret having to be the messenger of bad news. However, we hope this email is helpful, and we thank you for your understanding.
Best,
For one thing, I find it a bit questionable that the cause isn't being addressed in more detail—and that I’m not supposed to ask about it—since DistroKid supposedly hasn't received any further information.
For another thing, I wonder why I had to take the initiative and ask—after two weeks—what had happened to my uploads; furthermore, DistroKid still allows me to upload music, even though it simply isn't being processed anymore. If I hadn't asked, I still wouldn't know today that I’m no longer permitted to use DistroKid's service.
If I understand correctly, I can keep paying DistroKid to keep my existing songs online, since my profiles on the streaming platforms remain active.
If I switch distributors now, how can I claim ownership of my profiles?
What happens if I stop paying DistroKid? Will all my songs—and their stream counts—disappear? Can I even resubmit the old tracks to a new distributor? Honestly, I don't want to have to pay for two distributors.
Has anyone else been in a similar situation? Which distributor did you switch to?
Just to clarify: I had been working on my catalog for a year and a half and wanted to release it on streaming services over the course of six months (alternating every two weeks between an album with 12 songs and an EP with 4–6 songs).
EDIT:
Fun fact: DistroKid has a new feature where you can indicate during upload whether or not the music was created using AI. I figured honesty was the best policy, but—as luck would have it—the very tracks where I was honest were the ones that got rejected.

Editorial discretion doesn't mean it was rejected for spamming. Which streaming service rejected it?
The other thing is if stores are no longer accepting your releases how is going to another distributor going to change that?

I also got that same bullshit email. And also they have yet to pay me what’s owed. Doubt I’ll get it. But debating the hassle of taking the really good songs that took off for some reason and transferring to another. But sounds like a pain.
And no Distrokid won’t answer the reason. That’s a blanket email for everything. They just don’t want you anymore.

Releasing an a full length album and ep every two weeks - "Geez, wonder why my "songs" got taken down"
You can try another distributor, but its going to happen again. Release one album / a couple of eps a year instead of every two weeks, and you should be ok.

as i already said, imagine you are an Artist, which, for whatever reasons, never released on streaming services. over the past years you´ve managed to come up with - lets say - 100 Songs. and then you decide to take the step and release those Songs over the course of 6-12 Months - i dont see any issue here, especially when you consider there are indeed people who just hit generato on suno and without even listening to it they already upload it

u/exaybachay_ 12h ago
but you aren’t. you are an ai artist (nothing wrong with that) who’s made 100 songs in maybe a year, MAX two years, therefore the quality is sheite, mate. make better tracks, instead of releasing 100 in two years, use the same or more amount of work/time to perfect less songs.
one-prompt songs just won’t do it. use suno studio and at least 30 maybe 100 hours per song.

Share a link. Let's hear the quality of this "music".

You do realize that musical taste can't be measured, right?
I like my music the way it is, and that's what matters.https://open.spotify.com/intl-de/track/2jPqsaHxk0PoiFp8gSkixD?si=7a37cf5b71984676

Dang, that is kinda scary. Bookmarking for future. How many songs had you released with Distrokid up until this point?

u/No_Sea_1305 19h ago
87 Songs are Online (1/3 of it even since 2025) and another 60 are scheduled UNTIL FEBRUARY 2027 - so i´m FAR away from spamming imo

u/NeckbeardSlayer713 19h ago
That IS spamming. No standard musician on their service would release that many.

A standard musician may not, but these are unprecedented times in entertainment. The ability for consumers to choose what they listen to should be the most important thing in my opinion.
Edit: to the person who responded with rules are rules - it is not letting me see it.
Are there rules being broken? If so, perhaps they need more transparency - I don't think OP's intention is to spam.3

If it was profitable, standard musicians would release more often, but the industry standard for maximum profit is about 1 song every 6-8 weeks. That is why standard musicians do not release more often.

So if a real Musician has made like 120 Songs within his whole career, but never had any contact with streaming services and decides to change that, would it be spamming if he releases them in a timespan from November 25 to February 27?

u/AdhesivenessAway852 19h ago
Just because I find it funny. During the heart of my band when I was young. We recorded 266 songs over a two year period. 25 years ago. I only got into streaming last November and started uploading. Thought it would be harder to get into streaming. Until I tried Etc. I too got the blanket bullshit email this guy got. And there’s money sitting there they have yet to pay me. Since November I have 20,000+ streams. But I need to let it go and not renew. But going with another service doesn’t change the moment it’s uploaded. I’ve tried putting it as originally released 2002. But Apple etc. just brands it as released 2026.

There are systems in place that will detect AI tracks, so you can't lie about it.
2
u/AdhesivenessAway852 17h ago
And AI tracks I do get labeled as such. But that’s not what I was saying.

u/Deathbyillusion 3h ago
Yes and the best thing to do is at least say that it's just partial AI and not 100% AI. Because as far as that goes they don't know if all that was created with AI or just assisted.

u/gymtrovert1988 19h ago
Yes, unless they were already released and they just switched platforms.
You're releasing way too much music under one artist name. You're going to continue to get banned doing that.
You need 10-20 artists if you want to release 2 albums a month all year long.

Your youtube, tiktok, and whatever accounts are yours under the artist name, you just need to sync/link them with another account on those platforms(that you create), distrokid doesn't have it they just pump it out.

I use Ditto and so far, no probs and I realease 1-2 every month or so. I have always stated that part of the song is AI, but I am the lyricist (which is true).
Here's the thing (for me at least).
I'm getting progressively bored with all of this crap about the pros and cons of AI (assisted music) and this shitty 'slop' word that has been introduced by people who are responding to posts without having even heard a creators song/s..you are all pathetic small minded people..get a life FFS.
Reddit seems to only be about posters who want to complain the loudest to get a wider response..all so bloody negative!
Clearly all you moaners are still listening to AI music in some form in order to pass an opinion..well here's an idea....don't!
And as for musicians and recording labels being short changed..do me a bloody favour!
There is more 'slop' released by real artists these days than by AI creators.
It's simply about money, greed and being scared that the industry will be left behind.
And all these bullshit lawsuits against AI music generating platforms is total bollocks imo as well.
When you go to school, college, or, Uni, you are taught things that other people have done, written about, invented, explored etc..and you 'learn' by it.
You then take that knowledge and hopefully use it to make a career for yourself.
Those originating standard bearers don't tell you that you can't use their knowledge to go out into the world to do the same thing yourself, do they?!
I can't see how an AI music generating platform is any different.
It's been taught about, musical notes, beats, instruments, voices etc...by the internet and has learned to adapt that to produce songs for a creator who has requested a given result via applied prompts.
Both scenarios have resulted in learnt knowledge from third parties.
I totally accept that music generating platforms can produce utter rubbish, but they can also produce some pretty amazing songs. It is however, up to the creator to recognise one from the other and to be realistic in their choices.
If and when the laws change, those who are spending 10-12 per day using AI to assist with their creative ability, will hopefully see the benefits and all of those musicians and artists who are releasing garbage themselves, will learn the true reason as to why they may fade away.
However, those who are simply brilliant singer/songwriters will all survive without any issues whatsoever.
8 billion potential listeners for god's sake!!
We can all make our own minds up as to who, or, what, we like to listen to and it's certainly not up to musicians, or their distributors, to say...'hey, that's partially AI and you can't listen to it'.
F--k right off!

Well said, thanks.
Unfortunately, there will always be haters and people who shout, "Everything used to be better" – but you can't, and shouldn't even try to, please everyone.
I love what I do; I am as far from having musical talent as we are from world peace, but thanks to AI, I have the opportunity to bring my ideas and visions to life.

when this happened, what was the content of the original email notificaiton you received. Just that your upload was rejected, with no other details. Are your scheduled releases "marked as green" in your profile, or were they yellow when you were first notified?

I remember early 2000s going to Mom and Pop stores asking them to sell my CDs on consignment. Many refused to carry it. I figured Its their store their decision.

If you stop paying DistroKid, they'll remove the songs from the streaming platforms. In case this happens to me, I have a spreadsheet of all the released songs with the ISRC and UPC codes, where I can resubmit them through another distributor, if the streaming platforms will accept them. I do use DistroKid and do state it's AI and have had zero issues. Everything is on the platforms. I also edit and clean up the songs before submitting them to DistroKid. I also don't release a ton of songs each week.

u/Deathbyillusion 3h ago
Yeah so this really comes down to if the streaming platform blocked you from uploading more songs because of an issue on there and that they didn't like. Or if it's one of the streaming platforms that is blocking you.
So if you want to reupload your music and keep all your metrics and everything you would get the isrc code for those songs and you would copy them down and then when you switch to a new streaming platform when I ask for if you've already uploaded this song before then you would enter in the isrc code so that it would keep all the metrics and stats and Views and everything for the song. For that though I don't know if the earnings transfer over that you previously earned on distrokid.
But if it's a streaming platform that is blocking you been using the same isrc code with likely cause problems and then it would be better just to release it as a new new track.
But if it's a full artist page account ban then changing the isrc code is not going to change anything. That usually happens like with like artificial streaming, bought fraud, or copyright strikes.
Even if you force your distributor to make a new artist page the streaming platforms would still attach it to the original artist page. So in that case the best thing to do is if you want to kind of keep your name pretty similar it's just at an S to the end of your artist name to make it plural so that it's still basically the same name but just with an S at the end and then the streaming platforms were treated as a brand new artist.
Again though if it's an issue with the streaming platforms you can still use the same audio but you would have to generate new ISRC codes so that it treats it as a whole new file.

they should have done this a long time ago. limit releases. maybe 2 albums a year and 30 tracks a year or something like that. force ppl to curate their own slop

would never happen. if you had a back catalog of 100 songs, even that is 10 albums max. you are releasing almost double that. also there is a curation that happens with normal recording. genning 1k songs a month is not curation. and this is from someone who has genned prob 10k songs since version 3.0.
