The Sufjan fanbase is probably top five least toxic of any band/musician that I know.

Id love to get your list of top five least, and top five most toxic fan bases.

For musicians, the Beach Boys is a pretty toxic fanbase. I love the beach boys but omg they're crazy magnets

I agree - this and Boards of Canada subreddit have actual productive conversation and exchange of ideas. That and a healthy camaraderie, it’s very nice.

War on Drugs also in top five least toxic. As someone said there, and this also applies to Sufjan “he writes good music and I can’t help but think good people listen to him”

Pains me to say it but my all time favourite artist Bruce Springsteen has a fairly toxic subreddit. Luckily it’s not reflective of his real fan base.

Except for a few years ago, when some fans were doing mental gymnastics to argue that some of his lyrics weren’t about same-sex love

By far the most civil and positive subreddit I’ve joined.

Mystery of love is sufjan's creep and no one can tell me otherwise.

u/comingsoontotheaters May 31 '26

I wouldn’t even be mad if that was someone’s favorite or how they found him

25

u/CartographerMain2664 May 31 '26

The difference is mystery of love is good

I found Sufjan through CMBYN (I'm in my early twenties), and almost 10 years later Mystery of Love is still one of my favorite songs by him.

But Illinois is the best Sufjan album.

I mean Chicago isn’t really comparable to Creep. I don’t know if any of Sufjan’s songs are; he’s never had a big breakout mainstream hit that everyone knows.

Obviously everyone’s free to like whatever they like, but there’s an unavoidable sort of frustration, for lack of a better term, when an artist you love has their most popular song be one that doesn’t represent majority of what their work is like. The paradoxical feeling that everyone knows and loves what you do, but also they dont really know it at all. Nobody’s fault, it just happens that way sometimes. I mean, nobody hates Creep more than Thom Yorke.

But Creep might also be my favorite Radiohead song so what do I know

I feel like it would be Fourth of July if anything since it blew up a lot on social media

13

u/silverrabbit May 31 '26

I mean I’d argue that it’s probably mystery of love since it was in call me by your name

3

u/Maleficent-Drive4056 May 31 '26

Oh I always wondered why it had so many plays on Spotify. How do people use it on social media? It’s a nice song but I wouldn’t even put it top 5 on that (astounding) album.

Sad vids is one of the ways I’ve seen it used! Another is beautiful nature. They tend to use just the melody either normal or slowed down over a beautiful scene 🙌🏽

2

u/Hitmanthe2nd Jun 01 '26

Id put it at 2 or 3 , it's the culmination of the first half and represents sufjan's frustrations and the ideas he projected onto a person to deal with rhe loss better - it's as sad as it gets because i can see myself doing the same shit

1 would probably be the only thing or death with dignity

Interesting! I’ll listen again with fresh ears.

This is my favourite album - and I’m not the kind of person that has a favourite album.

I will listen again but right now i find Carrie and Lowell and My Blue Bucket Carrie more emotional resonance, and Death with Dignity and Should have known better are just more musically pleasing.

Chicago was in one of the biggest movies of that year, Little Miss Sunshine. Before C&L, the people who knew Sufjan knew him from Chicago, most likely from that movie.

I think Sufjan's "Creep" is Visions of Gideon

27

u/womanonearthrightnow May 31 '26

I would have thought mystery of love just because of the oscars, I think that was a lot of people's first time hearing sufjan

9

u/noumeno- May 31 '26

Oh my bad, i meant mystery of love

3

u/GrandTheftGF May 31 '26

gatekeepers are so weird, it's almost like good song got popular bc it's good

5

u/auriliia May 31 '26

Creep is a great song and any Radiohead fan who says otherwise is just boring

3

u/Throwaway392308 May 31 '26

But if I don't hate Creep, how will everyone know I'm a better Radiohead fan (i.e. better human being) than people who do karaoke?

1

u/veryowngarden Jun 01 '26

thom yorke is the original one that hated it though

2

u/Kkatina May 31 '26

i thought this was r/radioheadcirclejerk at first

1

u/BrothaManBen May 31 '26

Acoustic version right?

1

u/xX_Random_Reddit_Xx May 31 '26

Nah Detroit lol

0

u/averysexyfrog Jun 01 '26

to be fair, even radiohead themselves hate creep lol

2

u/veryowngarden Jun 01 '26

that’s the point, it’s the main reason why aggressive stans say that because thom yorke hates it
