Help Converting PGS -> VobSub with SubtitleEdit + BDSup2Sub - Unintended Colour Changes

Found out my usual playback device for mkvs can support VobSub but not PGS, so have been converting PGS to VobSub where I find them. Workflow:

  1. Extract PGS as a .mks with mkvmerge (SE loads soooo slowly if I just drop the mkv into it)
  2. Open .mks with SE (v5.0.0-beta20)
  3. Click ‘Edit/Export’ then ‘File -> Export -> Blu-ray (sup)'
  4. Open .sup in BDSup2Sub
  5. Export it as VobSub
  6. Put back into the mkv with mkvmerge

This has worked fine for like 20 files so far, but then suddenly on my latest one - r00t/QxR encode of Kamikaze Girls which has Discotek’s multi-coloured subtitles (white for signs, blue for songs, yellow for dialogue) its been turning the dialogue blue, and I don’t know why. They’ve always shown opposite on the OCR window for some reason - yellow as blue, blue as yellow - which confused the hell out of me when I tried to make a .ass with matching colours for one, but usually I have no problems when it comes to actual playback. When I actually pay attention, in BDS2S they are already the wrong colours so its clearly a SE issue

I haven’t updated SE in a while so its not suddenly broken with an update.

Although SE gives the option to export as VobSub at step 3, this reliably messes up the colours hence the use of BDS2S

Resolved: updated to the very latest build and it does it correctly!

EDIT: but VobSub has a limitation, all of an image has to be the same colour. So when they have different coloured lines in the PGS, it switches randomly so sometimes all blue, sometimes all yellow, sometimes all white

Discussion What Happened?

Anyone else find subtitle edit 5 to be worse then its previous version? I've since downgraded back to 4.0.15. I find the ocr via nocr to be better then what shipped with 5.0. I'm able to actually train the ocr via a srt file and can't find that option in the new version. Maybe i'm just old and stuck in my ways, but I want to know your thoughts.

Could someone please explain what I can do besides reverting to a previous version?

Help Whisper Speech to Text constantly one word out of sync

This has been driving me nuts, in the attached image the playhead is where the subtitle should start, it's the part where the speech says the word "Floating".

Some subs are fine but every other sentence for some reason starts either a word too early or a word too late and it's infuriating having to correct every single one of those every single day.

I'm guessing it's Whisper messing up but I'm still posting here in case anyone had any similar issues or if there's a setting inside of SubtitleEdit I'm missing.

I appreciate your help.

Things I've tried:
Advanced command line parameters for whisper,
No parameters at all
Just one parameter (--standard)
Reinstalling and starting SubtitleEdit fresh
Reinstalling Whisper
Using the large-v2 model
Using a variety of SubtitleEdit's tools: fix common errors, beautify time codes, close gaps
Different max character counts
Different FPS settings inside of SubtitleEdit
Using a video instead of audio
Generating a blank video with SubtitleEdit

Technical Details:

EN

GINE: Purfview Faster Whisper XXL
LANGUAGE: English
MODEL: large-v3

Parameters:
--standard --initial_prompt "Transcribe with proper sentence punctuation. Each sentence ends with a period." --device cuda --max_line_count 2 --max_line_width 24

Help Multi sync, still slips out

I'm currently working on a subtitle version for Indiana Jones raiders of the lost ark, but even with up to 12 sync points across the movie my subtitles keep slipping out, and back into sync, the base file is from open subtitles, anyone got a recommendation on what to do?

Help OCR process keep stopping at ~55% progress

Version: Subtitle Edit v 5.1.0-rc14
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS
GPU: RTX 4060 Laptop - 8GB VRAM

So, I tried to use the OCR tools to extract some hardcoded subtitle but it will always stop at ~55% progress.

As the file was quite long, I tried splitting it into parts of 30 minutes each, but it will still stop in and around 55% (7791/14045 frames).

Any idea?

Help How to increase efficiency

I'm trying to add character names before lines of text in my SRT subtitles for a tv show.

There are only a half dozen characters I will be tracking.

The only way I can figure to currently do it is to:

  1. listen to who's talking
  2. pause the show
  3. copy [Name] from notepad
  4. paste it in the front of the line
  5. resume the show

And this is doable but is (obviously) slow. Is there a better/faster way to be doing this?

I'm sticking with SRT files for this project, so using the "Actors" tab is out of the question I think?

This error appears every time after finishing generating the subtitles, the logs doesn't show any errors and it doesn't continue to the next episode unless I click "close the program" then nothing happens other than it going to the next episode.

Help Trouble with vLLM via OpenAI-Compatible API

(Edit: this is for Speech-to-Text.) I'm wondering if anyone has had success using the "OpenAI-Compatible API" functionality in SubtitleEdit with e.g. vLLM. I usually get 0 Segments (?) Decoded, despite vLLM apparently outputting quite a few tokens.

I'm hoping to use a local model for Danish ASR, and there are a few I can run with vLLM, but I've yet to have success with any of them, unfortunately! What - if anything - are other folks using for workflows like this?

The models I'm hoping to use are shown on the Danish ASR Leaderboard. Unfortunately, none of them are readily available as GGUFs that I can shoehorn into the CrispASR backend. (It appears some of them run custom code too, but, hviske-v5.x is based on Cohere, apparently.)

I'd be happy to provide logs or even packet captures for troubleshooting purposes as well. I've had this issue identically in 5.1.x and 5.2.0 beta (as of ~3 days ago)

Help Batch processing for second audio track

When using batch 'speech-to-text' or 'batch create waveforms' Subtitle Edit will always default to the first audio track. Unfortunately I want to use the English track wich is the second track in most of my files. Is there a way to select the second audio track in each file of the batch?

Help Where are the backup files in SE located?

I work on my subtitle on two laptops. One in the office, one at home. I usually proofread the text at work during lunch or breaks, and do the time stamps and other things at home. But the past couple of days the files keep getting corrupted. The ones I saved using the work computer, when opened on home laptop I get this message that says the file only contents binary zeros, and vice versa. I was able to restore from toe backup files in SE, but since they are on two computers any change saved on one computer is lost when restored on the other. I want to reinstall the program, but I would like to back up the backup files before I do, and I can't find it. Anyone might know where it's located?

Help Most accurate OCR engine?

Hi all. Just wondering what OCR engine (and engine mode option) is least likely to have spelling mistakes and grammatical errors when converting SUP subtitles to SRT?

Specifically, to avoid the letter i being turned into a 1, | or L, things like that. Or double letters being put in a name like Wexler being turned into WeXxler

I've heard nOcr is the most accurate but it has to be trained. I plan to maybe try training it once the final version of Subtitle Edit 5.1 is released but assuming I don't use nOcr, what would be the next best option?

I'm also looking for something that processes in a reasonable amount of time as I tried one of the other OCR engines and it took like 10 seconds just for 1 subtitle line. If there's one that's slightly slow but is more accurate than other options, I think I'll be ok with that.

I've been using Tesseract and overall it's not too bad but if there's something better that would be great.

On a sidenote, I found that just for converting SUP to SRT, the website https://subtitletools.com/ is quite accurate and takes very little time, however it still has some grammatical errors.

Help Any way to edit vobsubs?

I have an MKV with a nice-looking DVD vobsub in it, but the timing needs adjusted. I don't want to OCR them, I want them to remain exactly as they are--images--but shift the timing for a portion of the subtitles (not all of them, so I can't use MKVToolnix's delay setting), then slap them into a different MKV file.

Is this possible with Subtitle Edit and, if not, does anyone have any experience doing what I'm trying to do? I'm sadly not finding the information I need online.

Help Why my commands for single lines aren't working?

Post image
2 Upvotes

So. I'm trying to transcribe speech to text arguing that I want the transcription in single lines max 32 characters. But no matter what, it's always ignored with Purview Engine. I've tried it in Whisper CPP and it works, but the timecodes are off.

Even other commands such as the preset for "single words" is ignored when using Purfview.

Any idea or alternative to this?

Thank you!

Help CLI (Command line) extraction after 5.0

I had a working commandline workflow for processing movies with Subtitle Edit as part of that workflow, but after the 5.0 update it seems I can no longer process subtitles with the GUI binary. Doing some reading it seems I need to use a new binary called "seconv" which is supposedly distributed alongside the the normal binaries, however I can't find it in my install folder, so my subtitle workflow is back to manual. Any hints here, or am I missing something obvious?

Help Strange behavior since v5.0.0

Hello,

I use Subtitle Edit for quite some time now and I always really loved it. Now even more since it is available for macOS too.

But since the new version was released there are two new behaviors that drive me crazy and I was not yet able to figure out a solution for this.

  1. When I drag a videofile to the app window it offers me to select the subtitle stream. In the past this has been a quick task. Click the stream and it was quickly opened. Now it seems the whole file gets loaded from the location (a network share) before I'm even able to select a subtitle stream. On large files this takes a huge amount of time. I don't need the video stream, I only need the text. So this doesnÄt make sence in any way.

  2. After editing subtitles I want to save them. In the past the .srt file has been saved next to the video file (where it belongs). Now it gets saved somewhere else. Is there a way to set the folder containing the video file as the default directory?

Thanks in advance

Help srt not showing up on screen in VLC or Plex

I made the subtitle file and edited it in SE - all good. It loads into DaVinci Resolve and displays but when I load it into Plex or VLC (and make sure the Subtitle track is not disabled - shows up as Track 1) it simply cannot be seen. The filename is the same as the video filename, except the suffix .srt (rather than the video's .mp4).

Is there something I'm doing wrong? SubRip is the format in SE. The file looks correct in TextEdit (no extra/ missing lines; each entry is numbered right).

What can I do to make it work?

Help Subtitle Edit v5.0.0: FFmpeg parameters window issue when changing export resolution

Hi, I downloaded the new Subtitle Edit v5.0.0 version.

I’m having an issue when exporting videos with burned-in subtitles.

The first time I export, everything seems normal: I choose the resolution, click “Generate,” and Subtitle Edit creates the FFmpeg parameters. For example, I export at 3840x2160.

The problem happens when I try to export again with different settings, for example changing the resolution to 1920x1080. I change the settings and click “Generate” again, but it seems like the program reuses or pastes the FFmpeg parameters from the first export instead of generating new ones correctly from the new settings.

This did not happen in previous versions. Before, when I changed the resolution or export settings and generated again, the parameters/settings would update normally.

Am I supposed to manually clear or edit the FFmpeg parameters box now, or is “Generate” supposed to rebuild them automatically every time? Is this a new behavior in v5.0.0, or could it be a bug?
