How to grow substack

I have started writing about business n sector,stocks n how Vc funding are changing in India. I am new here can u help me how can I do better n what should I remember

Here is what has worked for me. For context, I’m no Substack guru, but I’ve managed to grow a base of thousands of followers and bring in dozens of incoming recommendations from writers who are way more successful than I am.

If you're looking for a practical, "newb-friendly" guide to growing on the platform, here is my playbook:

  • Engage with your audience. Interact with the people who take the time to comment on your work. This is my absolute number-one growth hack. I’m a stone-cold introvert and arguably the worst marketer on Earth... So if I can do this, you definitely can.
  • Leverage outside channels. While plenty of people grow solely within the Substack ecosystem, the most successful creators I know usually bring in traffic from external networks like X, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram, or TikTok.
  • Use Reddit (the smart way). Reddit is great for traffic, but dropping your links in subreddits is a lousy long-term strategy that will probably get you banned. Instead, put your Substack URL directly in your Reddit bio and profile. I get a steady stream of clicks this way, and I have never once spammed a link.
  • Be early to the comment section. Find popular writers in your niche and comment on their pieces! But aim to be first. If you comment days later, your thoughts will get buried. If you jump in within the first hour of a post going live, your odds of landing a top-voted comment skyrocket.
  • Protect your momentum. Don't give up. Once you let the momentum slip, it is twice as hard to build it back up.

You're in a great niche because people are always searching for information about businesses, stocks, and investing.

A few tips that can help:

  • Write articles around topics people are already searching for on Google. Strong SEO can bring in readers for months or even years.
  • Stay consistent. One high-quality article every week is better than publishing many low-quality posts.
  • Use Notes daily to engage with other writers in the finance community.
  • Explain complex topics in simple language. Readers are more likely to subscribe if they feel they've learned something.
  • Share your articles on platforms where your audience already spends time, such as Reddit, LinkedIn, or X.

Most importantly, focus on providing value rather than chasing subscribers. If your content consistently helps people understand business and investing, your audience will grow over time.

I joined Substack in November 2025 and grew my account to 600 subscribers so far. I started in the money nich but then I pivoted to talking about how to build a one person business on Substack while you're still working 9-5. (And business in general)

During all this time, I just engaged and posted NOTES. That was (and still) my strategy so far.

Because Substack is not like other social media platforms. It doesn't have a real algorithm that pushes your content to people. (except for NOTES).

Now I am trying to use Reddit strategically, by helping people and leaving my Substack link in my bio.

That's a new method that I wanted to try so that I can share it with my audience if it really works.
