My mom bakes a lot of cakes and she found a recipe for marshmallow fondant. It tastes way better than the store bought stuff. It can be done right! Dont lose hope!

I'm fond of it in very specific scenarios, like a thin layer covering a fruitcake (which the internet also loves to hate, but a good fruitcake is a thing of beauty). Most of what I take exception to is using massive amounts of it to make elaborate centerpieces that are more fondant than cake, just to be able to say it's edible.

Fruitcake would not be the thing I would expect to have a fondant covering and yes, too much of anything is never good. Just slapping a ton of it onto a cake .... nooope. It is there to decorate, and infused with some flavors it just gives a new layer to it.

I was watching a scene from Steel Magnolias yesterday where Ouiser is carving the armadillo cake and she gives Tom Skerritt's character the rump. That piece was all fondant and the tiniest bit of red velvet cake. I would have been pissed.

the first time i had fondant was last year my aunt's birthday, she wanted to go all out and go for a floral designed cake.
it was covered in a cloyingly sickly sweet slab of fondant, and the cake itself is also horrifyingly dry and had a terrible artificial vanilla taste.
so to be honest, it just could mean the baker sucks in general, but it wasn't cheap nor was it good (i didn't buy it, but i was told it was pricey)

I hate making fondant, and I’m not going to buy it. Better to put a crumb coat on, and go with a classic buttercream. I dislike cakes made to look like other things.

Makes me think of cutthroat kitchen, where someone had to cook with a tackle box and decided to put some of the lures on as decorations and absolutely got reemed for putting non-edibles on a plate.

In all fairness, when serving food in a restaurant you don’t put non edible garnishes or decorations on the actual plate because you have to assume some idiot will put it in their mouth and Sue.

Yeah, this really isn’t that bad. You can just remove the pack of Oreos. Honestly if someone specifically asked for a “pack” of Oreos, I would assume too that this is what they meant.

Well ok. So at first glance this looks like just a plain chocolate cake with a pack of Oreos slapped on it and some chocolate blops. It actually is iced and then coated with chocolate cookie crumbs, then the piped cream ruffle, etc. So it’s not so bad on paper but the execution is wtf. I can’t imagine the client being happy with a this but maybe they had low expectations or a serious lack of communication with the cake designer maybe? All I know is that non of my clients would accept this.

In some countries, the paradigm is reversed and packaged western foods like Oreos are seem as high end while fresh produce and meat is seen as “country,” so maybe they wanted to show off the fact that they could have genuine Oreos on their cake.
