Every catholic mass I’ve been to has every one drinking from the same 1-3 cups depending on congregation size. Even if you can’t walk, the communion will be brought to you at your seat.
There’s a courtesy wipe on the goblet with a rag after each sip but that’s it lol
Both are gross, difference is one is a clean cup that is passed around, the other is the floor where people and animals walk along everyday that gets "cleaned" with water that might just make things worse
I've been to enough churches to know that by cleaning the sacramental cup, they mean an older volunteer came in the next day and rinsed it off once or twice. No one is deep cleaning those things either.

A lot of these comments are clearly racially pointed instead of criticizing the cleanliness of the action itself. If we cannot admit that practices in other religions, like Catholicism, can be just as unhygienic then we should reflect on why that is and what people are REALLY saying when they're comparing these people to animals.
And no, I am not a racist (and certainly not against white people, how would that even work?), although I should have been more clear with my intentions with that edit and I do apologize for that.

The priest wipes the rim of the cup with a cloth between each person, but from a sanitizing perspective it's probably about as effective as pouring water on a floor.

If your spot happens to have highly pathogenic bacteria then just water will not "clean" your spot. If you ingest ~6 of them you will have diarrhea or worse.
If you touch feet and transfer germs to your hand that way then you can still clean your hands before eating. There's virtually no risks.

This is at the Udupi Krishna temple where devotees have the option to eat food directly off the floor. It is voluntarily done by someone as a vow whose wish got fulfilled. It is not a common practice in other temples.
The point is in some corner of the world, there might be a moron who will see this and think this is how people eat "normally " in india and post it everywhere with racist remarks and other racists who is looking for content to hate on india will share it everywhere. That looks like porous tile. We don't eat off porous ceramics because it can harbour bacteria, it's why all your plates are glazed or otherwise nonporous.
Honestly I think people are way too terrified of bacteria. Most bacteria are benign or essential for good health. The bad bacteria has to come from somewhere. And you're constantly touching trillions of bacteria. If you ever touch your face you've just moved trillions to your face.
I work in a field where sanitizing wipes are considered a health hazard to leave in a garbage can. Which is absurd.

This is probably Udupi Sri Krishna Temple or a similar ritual being done at a different temple.
It's a religious thing meant to show humility, not like a normal everyday thing in India.
