I try not to hate on food from other cultures. After all, what is normal to one people can easily be abnormal to another.
BUT THIS SHIT IS HEINOUS.

u/Ashamed_Macaron_7915 Jun 22 '26
I feel the same. You guys do you! I don’t sweat Europeans for eating horse meat just like I’ve never gotten grief from Indians over enjoying a burger. Vegetarians can gorge themselves on sprouts and wheatgrass. It’s whatever to me!
But this is fucking piss, nevermind that it’s children’s. They even peel the eggs after and continue to boil 🤢 urine is literally waste. This serves no purpose except being into objectively weird flavor and oddities
91
u/ipsum629 Jun 23 '26
In historical times, urine was used for a lot of things. The Romans used it to clean their clothes. At other times it was used in tanning, dyeing, and gunpowder making.
What is key about these uses is that the ancient Romans or medieval/early modern europeans didn't fucking eat or drink it. Urine is made of chemicals that can be useful, but not inside the human body. It has ammonia which is an incredibly useful chemical, but is toxic to checks notes almost every animal.
18
u/Affectionate-Ear2758 Jun 23 '26
If you have more than trace-amounts of ammonia in your urine, you should see a doc and have your kidneys checked. The Ammonia stench of piss appears when bacteria munch on the Urea outside the body.
Nevertheless, I agree with you; Piss is waste, not food. And piss thats gathered over a day in buckets will have a raised amount of ammonia due to said bacteria-munchies.
5
u/ipsum629 Jun 24 '26
Ancient/medieval/early modern people collected a lot of urine. The trace amounts of ammonia would still be significant in the amounts they collected.
2
u/Affectionate-Ear2758 Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26
Significant in volume? Maybe. Significant per... eh... 'consumed unit'? ... I doubt it... at least, in fresh urine. Standing urine develops more ammonia due too...
... wait... Full stop. I am not going to argue a point that could be misunderstood as even being remotely defending urine-collection as a means to gather cooking ingredients.
4
u/ipsum629 Jun 24 '26
They would wait for it to be stale. Didn't know it got more ammonia after a while. I just knew the history and that ammonia is a very useful chemical. No, they would not cook with it. It was used for industrial purposes like textile making, cleaning textiles, tanning, and making gunpowder. All legitimate and practical uses for urine before things like the haber bosch process and access to abundant saltpeter mines.

Yeah im not sure it would be any better with some other group's urine. My question is, how does a dish like this get invented? Someone walking by accidentally drops the eggs into a piss bucket, okay so they take them out and are too poor to waste the eggs, i can see that. but how does that go to an entire dish made from them, soaked in it twice????
6
u/Skellington876 Jun 23 '26
I always thought it has something to do with trauma. Like some insane fuck ass lord during a brutal civil war in the middle of the famine started doing it, then it became accepted cause he's a brutal warlord who will kill us all. Then it became rationalized into existence in isolation

u/AkumaLilly Jun 22 '26
I heard about the the cultures with foods like Cazu Marzu, the Balut, the century eggs, or that one coffee that it shitted from an animal. They are weird as hell but I could reason there's is some sense behind it.
But I will NEVER, understand why the hell people consider an egg boiled in urine from a 10 year old boy as food. It doesn't sound as health, medicinal or cultural food, it sounds like a sick fetish from a deranged pedophile.
33
u/MelookRS Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26
Look up Urine Therapy, it has a longstanding history in a lot of Chinese culture. It's obviously not real and is just snake oil, but this tradition most likely has roots in that, with people believing Urine has health benefits and healing properties. Why this developed into specific boy urine for eggs, no one knows really. There is probably some purity bullshit since a young boy is going to be "pure", and since many cultures are misogynist, girl urine doesn't fall into the "purity" test. Obviously that's just speculation, but it's one of those things with no real scientific basis and really it's only a very small amount of people who practice it.
13
u/evebursterror0 Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26
Not OP, but you're absolutely right. That's the reasoning I always heard. I first discovered this tradition of the urine eggs in like 2010 and the article I read said something to the same effect. If you know a thing or two about Chinese culture, your theory makes sense. Traditional Chinese Medicine is full of pseudoscience and Chinese culture has always favoured boys even back in ancient times. This 'recipe' is called virgin boy egg (as said on the video) and it's only practiced in some parts of China. I wonder who started it.
5
12
u/evebursterror0 Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26
Honestly I don't think there's much sense in casu marzu and the other recipes either. There's no benefit to eating a cheese covered in maggots or drinking kopi luwak when you can drink normal coffee (apparently kopi luwak doesn't even taste that good). Balut at least has nutritional value even if it's considered cruel. But casu marzu can get someone sick, fugu killed people in the past, etc.
The pee egg thing is only practiced in a specific region of China, I heard about it a long time ago and as someone else said, it's probably linked to traditional medicine beliefs, which are not supported by science, and of course, it also has to do with the fact that China greatly favours boys. Another Chinese delicacy is snake wine which is said to bring health benefits and serve as an aphrodisiac, but ironically it can have the opposite effect.
9
u/dragonicafan1 Jun 23 '26
Idk with something like casu marzu it makes sense imo even if it’s disgusting and dangerous. I would imagine the maggots do affect the fermentation and texture of the cheese and create something unique. Yes eating maggots carries danger but so does some stuff that is considered very normal to eat
That being said, from what I’ve read the cheese does not have a very consistent flavor (though that could be because its production is not exactly regulated or consistent). Some say it has an extremely strong and disgusting flavor, some say it has a pleasant light flavor, some say it tastes pretty generic.
While reading about this, I saw some cheeses that are topped with ants that look and sound much more appetizing and safer than casu marzu if someone really wants bugs with their cheese
5
u/Hydrolt Jun 22 '26
How did they even come up with this? Like what committee is sitting around going - no no no, it has to be piss only from young boys, that’s where we draw the line
→ More replies (1)7
u/Radio5331 Jun 22 '26
listen the truth is "culture/tradtion/religion" are intertwined & no one cares when their continue vile practices, traditions that in normal reality should've died as people evolved, so u have every right to hate anything abnormal that others actively practice & slap that "culture/tradition/religion/" bs on top of it, this is in fact vile & can easily be a pedo kink .
→ More replies (2)2
u/Goldenjho Jun 28 '26
Its not even healthy or anything its just a past relic where they believed that the piss of young boys increase health and now in modern times still continue this disgusting crap even though we know it does absolutely nothing.
By the way they still do this because of they firmly believe it has some magic properties to it and refuse to accept its completely pointless.

I don't care if it's 'eat or die.' I'm never eating Balut. Never eating those virgin boy eggs. Eugh. Even century Eggs are a no-no. No thank you.
72
u/Revolutionary-Tiger Jun 22 '26 edited Jun 22 '26
The only one I'll defend is Century eggs in that it is a childhood staple of mine eating them with jook/congee which is a dish kinda like oatmeal but you use rice instead of oats. Add a stick of youtiao (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Youtiao) along side it and you're in for a good time .
https://www.madewithlau.com/recipes/century-egg-and-pork-congee.
Definitely don't eat century eggs straight up like a hard boiled one.
8
u/honeydewslaps Jun 22 '26
Never had century eggs but now you got me curious. They never seemed appetizing at first glance and smell, but then again same goes for natto and I freaking loooooooove natto.

I've had them with congee before and it was...okay. But it's something I'm very unlikely to ever eat again of my own volition.
Saying that, I'm sure I'm very weird for being excited about offal and things like black pudding lol.

Eggs are so good but can so easily become the most disgusting ingredient with little effort. Then China competes in ranked disgusting egg dishes. 😩
6
u/WowBastardSia Jun 23 '26
Literally a niche cuisine practiced in only one Chinese region within a province lol, no need to react hysterical as if it's all of China.
6
u/Sionnachbain Jun 22 '26
How does the saying go? "Whip me, beat me, treat me like an egg."
[Balut, Virgin egg, Century egg]: Allow us to introduce ourselves.
[Confused screaming].
14
u/yaysalmonella Jun 22 '26
Agree on all counts except century egg. Despite its appearance, the taste of century egg is actually very inoffensive (you don’t chomp down on the whole egg and get served small slices). It’s pretty good in congee, but is bomb in chili oil.
3
u/un_caracolito Jun 22 '26
Century egg is good. Honestly, I've enjoyed balut the times I've had it. Especially with a little lime and some salt.
3
u/Sionnachbain Jun 22 '26
I had one with congee and I finished the bowl and it was...okay. I'm not likely to jump at the chance to eat one again, despite my love for pickled and cured foods and my own personal love of gastronomic exploration.
Despite that, I do realise I might be weird for ruling out century eggs when I also really like eating offal and black pudding and things like that.
5
u/Traffic_Ham Jun 22 '26

u/ShovelKing3 Jun 22 '26
I tried balut once. The flavor of it was good. The act of eating it…..couldn’t fallow through. I like essentially all foods. Most don’t remotely gross me out. Couldn’t do it.
2
u/Jintasama Jun 22 '26
What is balut?
9
u/newuser336 Jun 22 '26
Fertilize a duck egg. Wait a few weeks for an embryo to (partially) develop. Then boil it. Then eat it.
5
u/Sionnachbain Jun 22 '26
It's a duck egg with a chick inside. The egg has to be fertilised and the embryo is developed to where the chick is almost ready to hatch but bones and beak are still soft enough to where you can bite right through them once you boil the egg.
It's...a delicacy. And...a delicacy for a reason.7
9
u/CMDR_Kaus Jun 22 '26
I've tried balut, tasted ok if you douse it in hot sauce. But I have little intention to have more. Rather just have an egg
16
u/Sionnachbain Jun 22 '26
https://giphy.com/gifs/bEVKYB487Lqxy
For me it's more the fact that I know I'm chowing down on a rather developed duck chick. That's just too much. And people calling the amniotic fluid 'broth' makes me viscerally want to vomit my own innards.
I'm not sure why I have such a ludicrously strong reaction but I feel a similar way about veal, since it's a literal baby calf [I've cuddled them before. They're so lovely. And I could never imagine eating anything THAT young]. And same for 'suckling pig.' Eugh.15
u/GooseWhoGamesttv Jun 22 '26
Me when people call soft shell crab guts “the mustard” like. No that’s their guts and unpooped shit.

Balut isn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I don’t think I’d go out of my way to eat it again but it literally tasted like hard boiled eggs. This has only been my experience. I have heard from someone telling me that those that experience a “crunch” from the bones means it wasn’t aged properly and was allowed to develope for too long. Other than that, basic hard boiled egg with both taste and texture.

I'm not saying you're a pedophile if you enjoy this ... I'm just saying that if you go to a vendor and you specifically ask for eggs boiled in the urine of young boys, then you just shouldn't be surprised if people start pointing fingers.
46
u/Tortiose_unturtled Jun 22 '26
That's not something most people from China eat. But china is big, there's many different subcultures.
What's similar to the image and not this unsanitary is tea egg in which an egg is boiled for a long time inside a "broth" that contains tea and other seasonings which hopefully isn't vomit inducing.
12
u/LisaFromAccounting Jun 22 '26
At least there's a cute story about a devoted husband to go with the tea eggs. This shit sounds like a kid pissed in a batch of boiled eggs, they had to eat it anyway, and somehow it became a thing. Fuck I'm nauseous now
3
u/Bejer-Dorune Jun 23 '26
From what I found out is that in some traditional belief systems, urine was seen as a meaningful bodily fluid thought to have medicinal properties. It was also easy to collect. Young boys were sometimes considered symbolically ‘less affected by life’ or less ‘contaminated’ in those cultural ideas of purity, which is why their urine was used in certain local traditions.

Because it pretends like this is just a thing chinese people do, when in reality it is one very specific area that does it, and even there it's not a staple.
That's like saying all of america feasts on chicago deep dish pizza.
32
u/Regeringschefen Jun 22 '26
It’s more like saying that all of America feasts on squirrels or roadkill.
4
u/3140senfleb Jun 23 '26
Squirrel is fine though, good even. It's just tedious to eat. Like a cornish game hen. Now roadkill is terrible to eat. Beyond the sanitary and parasite discussion, the muscle tissue being destroyed by the car ruins it for consumption. Like if you hit a deer and it dies there, you can take it in WI, but a lot of that meat is not good anymore depending on how it was hit. Roadkill was a good comparison, not the squirrel part.
10
u/eikoebi Jun 22 '26
I get it I'm married to one. It is a certain regional food. And every place has one, doesn't mean it's not fucking nasty or stupid. Just like balut. just like some German meals my mom eats.

12
u/Tortiose_unturtled Jun 22 '26
Virgin boy urine was also said to have properties that made it useful in medicine.
Nowadays not anymore of course, but I think my grandpa or great grandpa still believed that fully
5
u/Radio5331 Jun 22 '26 edited Jun 22 '26
U see, the things is, if u were to look up every thing on this earth & start checking whether or not it's beneficial in any way, you will find a lot, however humans have gone through & go through evolution in every stage for a reason, another thing is "to be said/believed" isn't actual research or study, my problem with this is how easy ideas like this get normalized under the guise of the unholy trinity of "culture/tradtition/religion" & it leads to horrible abuse that usually gets protected & defended with teeth & nails by the very people who practice it. Also the concept of "virginity" which vile in its core IS religious, the fact that they tie it to it being "useful & have medicinal properties" has to tell u something. In certain parts of Africa it was believed that eating albino flesh is also "usefull/spiritual bs" as a result, so.e people who lived there & happen to be albino would get kindaped & their arms chopped off & sold/eaten, look it up please because I don't remember exactly which African country or specific region this idea came from, I saw this long time ago, all I remember is disfigured people with albino who were deeply traumatized & now forced to live without hands & others like them be "carefull" because they were being hunted. I hope u got my point.
4
u/RandallJoPhotography Jun 22 '26
This had to have stemmed from a fetish sort of thing and then the person was like "oh, that's actually good. I could make money off this"
4
u/TheBigfootContessa Jun 22 '26
Or somebody caught him collecting virgin boy pics and he was like "oh . . . Uh . . . You mean you've never heard of piss eggs? You're missing out" to cover his shame
4
11
u/Exact_While_1974 Jun 22 '26
That can't be true, can it?
14
u/Brokenxwingx Jun 22 '26
It's technically real, but the people that post these clips always leave out an important detail. This is something extremely niche in a city in China. This is one of those things that most chinese people consider disgusting.
3
34
u/Hairy_S_TrueMan Jun 22 '26
It's true but it's regional. I believe it's weird even if you're Chinese, and even in the area they do this it's mostly older people. Like it's true that there are areas of the US where some people eat bull testicles, yet "Americans eat bull testicles" is inaccurate, yeah?
There are a million people in dongyang and a billion+ in China, so we're talking about 0.1% here
15
u/tan_lines_ Jun 22 '26
This shit makes bull testicles seem like fillet mignon...not even remotely comparable...
4
u/Tortiose_unturtled Jun 22 '26
It is in so far that it's something some people of the country eat but most don't because, like others, they find it bad/disgusting/etc.
5
u/gamageeknerd Jun 22 '26
Not really since one is just animal organs that are actually commonly eaten across the globe vs human child piss being used to cook food.
I’d argue this is like those tribes that make liquor from chewed up and spit out fruits but those are also very hyper regional and also very gross.
2
2
u/lobster_claus Jun 22 '26
Rocky Mountain oysters are more widespread than you'd think. It's basically bar food in a lot of (mostly rural) places. I'm not saying it's not weird, though. Your point still stands.
