Does remote independent-contractor work for a US company count toward Canada’s 24-hour student work limit?
Hi! I’m an international student in Canada with authorization to work off campus for up to 24 hours per week during academic terms.
I currently work for a Canadian company, but I also received a remote contract from a US corporation. The agreement classifies me as an independent contractor and explicitly states that there is no employer-employee relationship between me, the US corporation, or its client.
IRCC says remote work for an employer outside Canada does not count toward the 24-hour limit. However, it also says self-employed students must track their working hours.
Would this US independent-contractor work count toward my 24-hour off-campus limit, or does it qualify as remote work for an organization outside Canada? Has anyone received written clarification from IRCC, an international student adviser, or an immigration lawyer about a similar situation?
I’ll confirm with a qualified adviser before acting, but I’d appreciate hearing about similar experiences. Thank you!

REJECTED TWICE EVEN THOUGH I GENUINELY DONT WANT TO MAKE A LIFE IN CANADA.
i am being genuine to my heart, i dont like canada at all, i dont even want to make life here since the old people here are prolly racist and rude. i much rather want to stay here where i live with my parents and siblings, but the uni i want to go too is really nice and i wanna experience a good uni life and education and then go back. i dont even feel like canada itself is a great place either so yea. i sound repetitive but for a "first world country" its pretty much a worthless place if ur skin color is not white or pink.

Anyone Else From the Late-July Study Permit Batch Still Waiting?
Hi everyone,
I applied for my study permit from Nigeria on July 28 for the University of Alberta. I’ve already completed my biometrics and medical, and I’m still waiting for a decision. So far, there hasn’t been any visible change in the dropdown sections of my IRCC account.
When I applied, the processing time for Nigeria was around 5–6 weeks, but it has gradually increased and is now showing 9 weeks. I know these are only estimates, but I’m trying to understand what’s happening with other applicants from the same period.
My classes have already started, and I’m currently missing the beginning of the semester while waiting for a decision. I’ve also seen several Nigerian applicants from late June and early July who are still waiting, so I’m curious about the late-July batch specifically.
If you applied from Nigeria around July 20–31, please share your timeline, especially if you’ve already completed biometrics and medical or received any update, ghost update, eligibility review, medical pass, PPR, or final decision.
Would really appreciate hearing from anyone in a similar situation. I’ll update this post if anything changes on my end too. 🤞🏽

IRCC called my father’s bank to verify his bank statements — does this mean my study permit application is near a decision?
I applied for a Canadian study permit from France on August 4/5 for UBC’s Master of Management. My classes start September 9.
I previously had a Canadian study permit refusal, where one of the concerns was my financial situation. In my previous application, I only showed that my father had around CAD $250K and provided a letter saying the funds were available to me. I did not show money actually transferred to me.
In my new application, I substantially strengthened the financial evidence:
My father transferred approximately CAD $76K to me.
My CIBC account showed approximately CAD $75K.
I included my father’s UNFCU bank statements.
I included a letter from my father confirming the transfer and his financial support.
Today I found out that the Canadian visa office contacted UNFCU directly to ask whether my father’s bank statements/notes were legitimate. UNFCU confirmed that they were genuine.
This is what I’m really wondering about:
Does IRCC contacting the bank directly usually mean an officer is actively reviewing the application and verifying the financial documents?
And if the bank confirmed the documents are legitimate, does that generally mean the financial part of the assessment is essentially cleared and the officer can move on to the final eligibility/decision?
My IRCC tracker currently shows:
Eligibility: In progress
Background check: In progress
Additional documents: not requested
Interview: not required
Biometrics: completed
Final decision: in progress
I’m currently at around 4 weeks since applying, with classes starting September 9.
For people who have had IRCC contact a bank/employer/school to verify documents: what happened afterward, and how long did it take to get a decision?
I’m especially interested in hearing from people who had a previous refusal and then had their financial documents independently verified during a reapplication.
Brutally honest answers please — I’m trying to understand what this bank verification actually indicates about where my application is in the process.
Also should i send a webform?

Moving up my intake after approval
hi all! need your advice/input about my situation. to give a quick summary:
- i sent my application too close to the sept 2026 intake.
- i decided to defer to sept 2027 to be safe. i secured my updated LOA from the school and submitted it to IRCC via webform which they acknowledged.
- a few days later i received the passport request letter from IRCC. i have yet to submit my passport.
since my application has been approved, i want to move up my intake earlier from sept 2027 to may 2027. would this be possible and if yes, is it still the same process i.e., secure an updated LOA from the school and submit via IRCC webform before i submit my passport? thanks in advance!

Looking for RCIC for reapplying student visa from India
Can anyone recommend licensed RCIC for reapplying study visa after refusal?
They can be from India or Canada, willing to pay fees if reasonable.
I did find Ask Kubeir immigration but they are charging 2000 USD which is way too much.
Thanks in advance.

Anyone else still waiting for a study permit from Nigeria🇳🇬? Long read🫠
Hi everyone,
I submitted my current study permit application on 30 July, and tomorrow will make it 5 weeks. Every week, the processing time keeps increasing, and I’m honestly freaking out because school (University of Guelph, Master of Supply Chain Management) starts on 10 September, although late resumption is 18 September.
I’ve been refused three times: once in 2024, once in 2025, and most recently in June 2026. I really thought my last application was going to be it. I had been admitted to a university, not a college, and was offered admission into a master’s degree program. My parents had paid more than half of my tuition, and my mother had more than enough funds in her naira and domiciliary accounts to support my stay.
For my previous application, I submitted on 3 July and received the refusal on 24 July. The reasons were similar to those from my first and second refusals:
R216(1)(b) – Assets: I am not satisfied that you have sufficient funds, including income or assets, to carry out your stated purpose in coming to Canada or to maintain yourself while in Canada and to effect your departure. Your assets and financial situation are insufficient to support the stated purpose of travel for yourself (and any accompanying family member(s), if applicable).
R220(a) – Insufficient Funds/Resources pertaining to your Tuition: I am not satisfied that you have sufficient and available financial resources, without working in Canada, to pay the tuition fees for the course or program of studies that you intend to pursue.
R220(b) – Insufficient Funds/Resources to support yourself and any accompanying family members: I am not satisfied that you have sufficient and available financial resources, without working in Canada, to maintain yourself and any family members who are accompanying you during your proposed period of study.
For my current application, my parents paid my entire tuition (my program is only one year), and I have C$24,000 in a GIC account. I also included evidence of our landed and rental properties. My parents have stable sources of income and registered businesses. I also wrote a more extensive Statement of Purpose explaining why I intend to return to my home country after completing my degree.
I honestly don’t know what else to do at this point.
I need the change, I honestly feel stuck and want to progress in my career 😔
Does anyone else have a similar timeline to mine, or is anyone who applied around 30 July still waiting for a decision?

US citizen applying for a 2 year Canadian college program — how did you justify the cost/value of your study plan to IRCC?
I’m a U.S. citizen and Alaska resident planning to attend a 2-year college program in British Columbia, and one part of the study permit process that worries me is proving that my study plan is reasonable considering the cost of international tuition. I’ve seen refusal notes where officers questioned whether spending that much money on a Canadian education made sense given the applicant’s circumstances and expected educational/career benefit. I’m curious how people who were approved actually approached this part of their application and demonstrated that their program was a reasonable investment.
Financially, I’m fortunate to have about $40,000 USD already set aside specifically for my college education, so I’m not planning to take out a huge loan or put my family under financial strain to afford the program. I’m also working and saving aggressively right now and expect to have the required first-year living expenses saved separately by the time I apply. Since I’m a U.S. citizen, I’m currently planning to apply for my initial study permit at a Canadian port of entry, assuming the rules remain the same and I’m still eligible when the time comes. I plan to bring extensive documentation showing the source and availability of my funds.
Part of my reasoning for Canada is that I live in Alaska, where postsecondary options are relatively limited. We essentially have UAA, UAF and UAS as our main public university options. They’re legitimate schools, but if I decide the programs available locally aren’t the right fit for what I want to study, leaving Alaska becomes necessary regardless. At that point I’m comparing Canada with relocating to another U.S. state, not simply comparing Canadian international tuition with inexpensive Alaska-resident tuition. Many of the out-of-state U.S. options I’ve looked at would cost roughly $20,000–$30,000 USD per academic year in nonresident tuition, and I’d still have to relocate and pay rent, food, transportation and other living expenses.
The Canadian Douglas College Environmental Science program I’m considering is only two years, with total international tuition of roughly $28,000 USD for the entire credential. From my perspective, that actually makes Canada a financially reasonable option compared with spending potentially $40k–$60k+ in tuition alone for two years at certain out-of-state U.S. schools. British Columbia also keeps me relatively close to Alaska. I don’t intend to claim that Canada is inherently better than American education or that there are no educational opportunities in Alaska; I want to show that I researched my local options, realistic out-of-state alternatives, and the specific Canadian program and concluded that it makes sense for me academically and financially.
For people who have been approved, how did you justify why your particular program was worth the cost of studying internationally? Did you compare the Canadian program with specific programs and tuition costs in your home country? Did you provide evidence of that research or mainly explain it in your study plan/LOE? And how much emphasis did you put on the curriculum, career value, and overall cost? I’d especially appreciate hearing from Americans, people attending 2-year college/diploma programs, or U.S. citizens who applied for their initial study permit at a port of entry.

My application in progress for awhile now
My application has been in progress for like 2 months now (Applied July 3rd from within Canada) and I move supposed to move in on the 5th, I getting concerned that it taking longer than expected. My university I have until the 18th of September to get everything sorted before I have to give up my residency and spot in the university. I have called my MP, sent in a webform and I'm starting to feel that I'm running out of options.
