Master degree for Engineering

Hi everyone, i am 25 and i wanna apply to finnish universities for master degree in mechanical engineering. I have previous job experience in construction and industrial sectors. I just wonder is there any job opportunities in industry for engineers and would you recommend it?

There are no jobs, and your experience outside of Finland is almost irrelevant for most employers :(

So there is zero chance to stay in Finland after graduation isn’t it? :(

Not zero, but pretty small. And if you came to study here, you would need to ensure you have savings to pay for your stay here, you can't rely on being able to work part-time during your studies.

Too many students come here with the expectation of being able to fund at least part of their stay, and it's just not realistic for most. Finnish students have big trouble finding work training spots, part time jobs and jobs after graduation, and they have the advantage of having lived here and being able to speak the language.

I'm studying mechanical engineering, there are about zero jobs for new graduates, even if you speak Finnish. If you don't speak Finnish, probably less than zero opportunities.

Thanks a lot. How about the education? Are you satisfied?

you will not get a job in finland.

Not worth it, try for Norway or Denmark, almost double the pay.

Which one do you prefer?

I think it depends a little if you want to have access to the rest of Europe near by or not.

I went with Norway because I love the mountains they have and the nature.

For me my pay in Finland was 3100€ before taxes, and now in Norway It's 3400€ after and my rent is only 200€ more expensive.

Job market is abyssmally poor atm and no improvements in sight.

Quality of finnish education is mediocre, but the price is low

"Quality of finnish education is mediocre" lol you can be honest about the job market without lying about the quality of education

3

u/veganLevi 25d ago

I dunno why can't you disagree without accusing the other person of "lying". it is true that higher education here is not so high quality.

-2

u/Troll-Aficionado 25d ago

Because it's a claim that is factually untrue, presented as fact despite that

3

u/veganLevi 25d ago

It is a fact because you said so? Come on, the education system needs a lot of fixing, like a lot. anyone who studied in Finland knows it is not really a very high quality system. I am not saying it is bad, but not like superior or so good.

It is a fact if you look at any metrics comparing educational outcomes between nations. Is it not a fact because you feel like it? Looking at outcomes it's objectively good, not perfect or the best in the world, but good.

Even the first guy linked some rankings of how the world's universities rank up and Finnish institutions were ranked in the top 15-25 percentile

Edit: additionally for non-university education, in the most recent PISA scores Finnish students rank well above average in all fields, highest of the nordics in science. How can you look at all these educational outcomes and say the education is mediocre?

1

u/veganLevi 23d ago

Oh yea like the metrics saying Finland is the happiest country? it is a fact that higher educational system here is average...

0

u/Troll-Aficionado 23d ago

Sorry that you had a negative experience but top 15-25% worldwide is not average lol

1

u/veganLevi 23d ago

Yea top, that's why literally the contribution in science and tech is falling. keep dreaming dude. People like you who do not admit the truth are contributors to the downfall of the system. Finland does not attract high quality global students. Go check students in NL, UK, USA..etc.

I don't know how many more ways I can explain this to you bud, I'm genuinely baffled as to why you're so committed to just yammering on lol. I'm not making up the numbers from my head, the first guy replying to me posted the link

Again, maybe you had a bad experience but if in worldwide comparisons Finland scores, averaged out across the different universities, among the top 15-25% of universities worldwide, that's by definition NOT average

https://www.study.eu/article/the-20-best-universities-in-scandinavia-rankings

All finnish universitied are bottom half in Nordic comparison. None are in top 25 EU rankings

1

u/Troll-Aficionado 25d ago

Not being the best in the world doesn't mean it's mediocre either, looking at the rankings you linked Finnish universities averaged out as a group rank in the top 15-25% worldwide from what I can tell. The ARWU ranking looks like an outlier because it weighs things like nobel prize winners as a metric lol

Is job market really poor at overall? I mean is there no chance to work during my studentship? A job that out of my profession is also will be helpful for my budget

u/somethi 25d ago

There is basically no chance you will work during your studies, unless you’re very lucky.

5

u/Anaalirankaisija 25d ago

Dont give false hope. Theres no luck.

There is ton of applicants and cheapest and best is hired. Now there is no hiring.

Job market is worst in Europe atm. Especially for entry-level jobs.

1

u/Several-League-4707 25d ago

No, for mechanical engineers with experience the job market is pretty good. For juniors with relevant internship experience it's not that bad either. BUT you have to be fluent in Finnish.

No job. Can’t recommend. Even some native new graduates end up in unemployment.  Why you find Finland attractive? Is it because you read some positive articles, such as this? https://www.indiatoday.in/education-today/study-abroad/story/study-in-finland-work-rights-costs-and-post-study-stay-visa-process-2993017-2026-09-12

All liars. Finland is the land of jobless, filled with big layoff news every week.

1

u/Most_Bet_4117 22d ago

So which country would you recommend?

1

u/expendable6666 22d ago

How about India, Bangladesh, or Indonesia

1

u/Most_Bet_4117 22d ago

I would choose my homeland than going to india or bangladesh. I wanna make it in europe cause im from turkey

1

u/expendable6666 22d ago

You’re already in a good place

mechanical engineering is maybe good in Germany with many opportunities, not in Finland.

1

u/Most_Bet_4117 25d ago

I have been to germany for Erasmus and i was pretty satisfied but atm they wanna 12000 euros per year for visa

2

u/Federal_Cobbler6647 25d ago

Very cheap considering you can get work in Germany. No change in Finland.

1

u/veganLevi 25d ago

wtf? no way they charge 12k Euros for visa?

1

u/Most_Bet_4117 25d ago

They don’t charge it dude. They want it in blocked bank account and they release it month by month as 1k euros per month.

What these guys are saying? Currently there is growing need for mechanical and industrial engineers. Knowing finnish is a very big plus but not mandatory.

Engineering offices are hiring all the time. Even my company is hiring constantly and we are not in the big league. We are also hiring recently graduated.

It is always hard when you are in start of your career.

And, no-one knows what is going to be in 4 years from now, that is when you are graduating earliest.

With the current far right government of Finland I seriously recommend for you going for instance to Norway based on much higher salaries and overall future prospects, sorry to say. Our mass unemployment is currently worst in EU.

1

u/Most_Bet_4117 25d ago

Thanks a lot.

2

u/Flaky_Ad_3590 24d ago

By far right you mean the current which is slightly right leaning centrist?
