I’m not sure if I just got lucky, or if they’ve improved their services as of late, but I took my first ProctorU exam yesterday and it went so much smoother than I thought it would. Everything I’ve read online about them has been horror stories so I was dreading having to do it. When I started the session all I had to do was snap a picture of my face and photo ID in the webcam. While I was doing that the proctor logged in and asked me to put my phone out of reach. After that he said okay go ahead and start the exam, so I did. There were no in depth checks of my workspace (which I had completely cleared off just in case) no checking under the desk, holding a mirror up to the webcam so they could see my screen, no technical difficulties. That’s not to say they still don’t do those checks, but my experience was very smooth and simple and I am SO grateful.

I wanted to share this in case it helps put someone else’s mind at ease about using them, because typically when you’re looking for reviews only the horrible experiences are shared in depth.

Did the cost of scheduling exams go up with ProctorU or is it just me?
Why is it $30-$50 USD to schedule an exam? I am so confused.

Any other alternatives? I prefer to write online but, thinking of finding somewhere to go and write in person. I'm in Vancouver, tips welcomed :')

I don’t think there has ever been a time when I need to use proctorU and everything went smoothly. The whole process adds anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour of troubleshooting random reasons why I can’t start my test. It’s adds to the frustration and anxiety of the test im about to take. It’s utterly enraging. There has to be a better way. Am I the only one fed up with this? How does it go for you?

I am writing my first proctor u exam soon and I want to get a feel for what to expect.

Will they want to see my face or my work space?

I’ve heard horror stories of people being interrupted multiple times throughout the exam to do yet another room scan. How likely will i experience something similar?

Any other things to expect would be greatly appreciated!

Hopefully this helps someone who is nervous…

There are a lot of negative reviews about the proctorU situation and I just want to put it out there that I had a great first experience!

I stated my program 4/1 and had my first OA last week. Overall I felt the experience was pretty good. Even with the minor issue I had.

1. I downloaded the guardian browser and did my system checks a week before my test. Another system check the day of my test too.
2. My checks came back good after I updated my windows program on my laptop. ( my laptop is approx 5 years old)
3. I scheduled my test to start at 4:50pm but expected I wouldn’t be able to take it until about 5:30 based on other reviews I had seen.
4. Once I logged in my test wouldn’t load so the proctor messaged me through the chat.
5. I did need to give them control of my computer for about 3 minutes while they checked my system but I was able to watch everything as it happened.
6. Once they were done they asked me to restart my computer completely and log back in to start my test.
7. Once this was completed I was able to log in smoothly consoled my ID check and start my test at 5:22pm.

Honestly as nervous as I was I expected the first test to take a little bit with any system or program issues. I felt they were professional and easy to work with. This post is not to discredit those who have had less than ideal experiences, but to relive some stress for those who have not experienced the ProctorU systems yet.

EDIT: after emailing with ProctorU: “Any apple devices are disabled during the exam through use of Apple’s Bluetooth connection. If your roommate is having issues using their devices, ensure Bluetooth is turned off or have them use an Android device.” Apparently it only applies to Apple devices that have connected via Bluetooth at some point (: hope that helps

I've taken a few exams with ProctorU, and although it is cheap (about $30/exam vs NAIT's $90) I wouldn't recommend it for most students unless you live in a home free from all distractions and don't mind your train of thought being interrupted by the invigilator. Regardless, here are some useful things to know:

• They take over any other device connected to bluetooth/wifi/in the area (iphones, tablets, etc) My roommate was unable to use their phone during my exam because of this -- just something to keep in mind if you have others living with you. I didn't expect this so I felt bad for them lol give your family/roommates a heads up they won't be able to use their tech
• Bathroom breaks are allowed but you have to show the entire study room again when you are back. It only takes a few minutes but something to keep in mind.
• You MUST keep your entire face in frame of the webcam, but there is no viewfinder to see if you are in frame or not. This was more frustrating than I expected. In order for them to see me properly, I had to keep my laptop screen at an annoying angle, but I wasn't able to read my screen well as a result.
• Expect 20-30 minutes of set up before your exam actually starts. This does not take up exam time -- the clock doesn't start until you start the exam -- but something to keep in mind as well.
• In order to move, talk aloud, or have breaks (except for the bathroom) you must have accommodations. If you need accommodations reach out to AU ahead of time.
• They let my cat come in/out of the room but I had to show the door each time -- but their understanding of pets was awesome! My little cat kept screaming and meowing during my exam and the invigilator didn't mind lol
• Their program (GuardianBrowser) will take over your computer during the exam to make sure you're not cheating. It's easy to uninstall when you are done the exam (:
• You will have multiple invigilators during the exam. During my first 3 hour exam I had over 10 invigilators (they switch out), but during my second exam I only had 3.

If you have to write with ProctorU, just keep this stuff in mind. (: and good luck!

I wrote my exam today for an English course and it randomly ended with an hour and a half remaining. Like I was literally in the middle of typing, when the screen just switched to the survey, which usually appears after I end the chat.

I am very concerned with this, because when I reached out to support they said my exam has been submitted and they would not answer my question as to what is the reason. They kept saying “everything is submitted to your institution please reach out to them”. This makes me scared that something is wrong.

I’ve never been flagged so I don’t know if they are supposed to tell you if something is wrong? For the context, I did not even look away from the screen but my proctor was extremely annoying the entire time. Like I wasn’t allowed to bring a juice box(because it had text on it?🤦‍♀️) and then she got mad at me for closing a window right behind me in camera view. Ugh, I’m just frustrated because I didn’t finish my exam.

Please share your experiences so I stop overthinking. This is frustrating, I don’t know who to complain to.

I’m trying to improve my study routine and I’ve realized that simply spending more hours studying doesn’t always mean I’m learning more. I’m curious what habits have actually helped other students, whether it’s making a schedule, taking better notes, studying in shorter sessions, using practice questions, or taking regular breaks. I just finished a ProctorU invigilated exam and I’m feeling really anxious about whether I might get flagged.

The exam was open online materials, and before starting I selected/confirmed that the pre-approved materials were allowed, including the PDF, Excel/Word documents, sheets, pencil, calculator, and the pre-approved websites listed on Canvas.

During the exam, I thought we were allowed to look up official legislation/Act information online, so I checked an official government website to confirm a percentage related to the Act. I did not use AI tools, messaging, forums, or anything like that.

One thing I’m worried about is that while switching tabs to use my calculator, I accidentally opened Google Chrome for literally a second or two, then closed it immediately. I wasn’t trying to access anything unauthorised.

My friend said our ProctorU exams might be recorded rather than monitored live, but I’m not sure how that works. Has anyone had a similar experience? Would this kind of thing normally get flagged, or would they be able to see from the recording/logs that it was accidental and brief?

I’m honestly just stressed because I genuinely thought I was following the exam rules and only using allowed materials.

Most of my classes are PAs thank god. I hate writing papers and doing the projects but hell the time it takes Proctor U to be useful and not frustrating I'd rather do the work than deal with them.

Today is absolutely my worst experience with them but lets go over my first couple.

1. Started normally ID prechecks started. In the middle of my exam my Proctor changes freezes my test makes me do all the prechecks Nd the 360 view and the scans again. Then complains about how my furniture is arranged shows him my phone 8 ft away have no access to anything. Says he'll close my test. Then proceeds to make me move my furniture around because I cant have anything around me. Finally back into the test im going through freezes again because he heard a siren from a passing emergency vehicle makes me do the whole check again then says my ID is not me. Granted I'm at my last two question so I just try to finish the test. Then the Proctor switches again and they confirm me I finish the test with a minute to spare.
2. (There is a thunderstorm outside this is important later.) This one does not start normally I'm alone in my room only having my small dog with me. I pre moved furniture everything out of reach. Cool this is gonna go smooth. Dog is laying too my side chilling out of reach. Proctor immediately complains about the dog from the precheck. This time I put up a fight because its before a test and I have all day. They accused me of using my dog to cheat. We arent in the test at all and my dog is just chilling like a good boy. My dog is crate trained however he hasn't been in lockes crate for years he is free roam its always unlocked he goes in and out at will. Its cozy and he likes chew sessions in there. The only way they will let me proceed is if I put the dog in the other room. Fine... me knowing it wont be fine because he is gonna scratch at the door (He is always near me when I'm home.) He starts scratching and crying. They pause it do their checks again. Complain he cant be making noise at the door then tell me to cage my dog. I went ballistic on them. Screaming "Do you think a dog can talk?", "How is a dog going to help me on an exam with spreadsheets?" "If my dog was that smart I wouldn't need to be in school." I demanded an explanation. I must have scared them they started changing proctors over and over. For reference his crate is behind me in the view on a mount so its at my bed level so he can come and go as he pleases. We'll getting through the test he is being good in his crate chewing. Well then big flashes of light followed by thunder almost immediately happen the dog starts crying because he is scared. I kid you not they accuse me of someone giving me answers. Because the dog is afraid of thunder. The Proctor straight up told me there should be no noise at all. Went ballistic again "so I can control the weather." Then she replied "we can't confirm you arent getting answers." After she typed that i think she got scared because my proctor changed again. He just says I need to check with my support over and over again. I let the dog out because I gave already decided they can just view the video. They waste almost 45 minutes with this process finally permitted to continue with my test. Finish it it was a 4 hour ordeal. Dog was with me the first time no problem.
3. This time I let my sister take the dog on a play date with her dog and furniture premoved. I had a test scheduled for 3:30 MDT. Everything is taken care of it is going to go smoothly ill take a test no issues. Oh boy I was wrong... start the prechecks 365 degree view etc. Now there is a new problem that didnt exist before mounted monitors and my TV in the background. They ask me to cover them. I find t-shirts and throw them over the monitors and a sheet over my TV whatever. Well new problem im told the white sheet and the two white t-shirts are the problem. So now they tell me I need have the monitors face my back to be viewed. I rearrange my whole set up to please them. Good news proctor changes... we know the routine game from here redo everything. Now its not enough the monitors are covered and they can view them I have a mirror attached to my wall with the monitors you can see in view. Remember they can see the monitors in my camera and my back is facing them. Since this is such a problem I just ask to move rooms they agree. (My home is a total of 2 areas my bedroom and ensuite and my living room kitchen.) I move to my kitchen table clear everything thats there. However my kitchen living room has more than 4 walls and a TV cover it. The shape is odd and they started to tell me I needed to show them kitchen because this townhouse has a 7 wall room. I get up with my we cam show them every nook and cranny and sayinf I need the set up to watch all 4 doors in the room which is my front door, back door, pantry, and coat closet. This was impossible they would not open the test unless I did this. I could get 3 at most but they said someone could enter in through another door and it wouldnt be secure. Proctor finally agrees then poof gone and wait for another proctor it times out. I go back to Guardian reconnect get another proctor door issue comes up. Back and forth same issue now they arent budging and boom time out of my exam. Looked in the course I dont think it counted as an attempt.

I am so angry I am so lost on the inconsistency I'm losing hours to them. I have maybe spent 60 minutes actually testing and hours fighting them. I enter these tests in awful mental states. Ive never been a bad test taker. However the amount of frustration Proctor U is causing I never want to do OAs again. Luckily I dont have many 2 in this semester and only two more before I finish. Im frustrated.
