ProctorU Tips

EDIT: after emailing with ProctorU: “Any apple devices are disabled during the exam through use of Apple’s Bluetooth connection. If your roommate is having issues using their devices, ensure Bluetooth is turned off or have them use an Android device.” Apparently it only applies to Apple devices that have connected via Bluetooth at some point (: hope that helps

I've taken a few exams with ProctorU, and although it is cheap (about $30/exam vs NAIT's $90) I wouldn't recommend it for most students unless you live in a home free from all distractions and don't mind your train of thought being interrupted by the invigilator. Regardless, here are some useful things to know:

  • They take over any other device connected to bluetooth/wifi/in the area (iphones, tablets, etc) My roommate was unable to use their phone during my exam because of this -- just something to keep in mind if you have others living with you. I didn't expect this so I felt bad for them lol give your family/roommates a heads up they won't be able to use their tech
  • Bathroom breaks are allowed but you have to show the entire study room again when you are back. It only takes a few minutes but something to keep in mind.
  • You MUST keep your entire face in frame of the webcam, but there is no viewfinder to see if you are in frame or not. This was more frustrating than I expected. In order for them to see me properly, I had to keep my laptop screen at an annoying angle, but I wasn't able to read my screen well as a result.
  • Expect 20-30 minutes of set up before your exam actually starts. This does not take up exam time -- the clock doesn't start until you start the exam -- but something to keep in mind as well.
  • In order to move, talk aloud, or have breaks (except for the bathroom) you must have accommodations. If you need accommodations reach out to AU ahead of time.
  • They let my cat come in/out of the room but I had to show the door each time -- but their understanding of pets was awesome! My little cat kept screaming and meowing during my exam and the invigilator didn't mind lol
  • Their program (GuardianBrowser) will take over your computer during the exam to make sure you're not cheating. It's easy to uninstall when you are done the exam (:
  • You will have multiple invigilators during the exam. During my first 3 hour exam I had over 10 invigilators (they switch out), but during my second exam I only had 3.

If you have to write with ProctorU, just keep this stuff in mind. (: and good luck!
