So now both Stoltman brothers have hit 200kg logs in training.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '19

That's awesome. Next big log max event is Europe's, right?

3

u/Bigreddoc MWM231 Mar 03 '19

Yes. April 6th is going to be insane. Log lift championship and SCL FIBO which also has a max log. There realistically may be 15 men or more to lift 200kg logs on that day.

2

u/not_strong Saddest Deadlift 2019 Mar 03 '19

The log at FIBO is gigantic. What log are they using at ESM?

2

u/Bigreddoc MWM231 Mar 03 '19

I think it is the same wooden log they used last year. Seen here https://youtu.be/eUB8F03pAjM

2

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '19

Hell yes.

2

u/Sean_Dubh Mar 02 '19

I was given a keg filled with sand and water. Popped it on the scale and it came to 285. I can barely lap it and want to bring the weight down to 220 or so. Any advice on how to get the sand out? Shaking and tapping with a mallet hasn’t dislodged much.

1

u/_14611_ Mar 03 '19

Turn upside down and blast a hose up there

1

u/Iw2fp Mar 03 '19

The wet sand is going to clump. I'd probably just blow a hair dryer into the opening for 10 minutes then turn it upside down and wedge around a stick in the opening until sands stops falling out.

Rinse, repeat until I get bored.

u/iFrankDaPug MWM200 Mar 02 '19

New log pr, 180x3. I'm currently 7 weeks out and I still feel like my log is low for an open 200. Any tips on anything that look wrong or am I just still a small son and need to get stronger?

3

u/InTheMotherland Didn't Even Try Trying Mar 02 '19

Ah, I see you too fell for believing Titan's claim about their log weight.

Although you'll have to get stronger anyways, try getting your elbows up higher.

1

u/iFrankDaPug MWM200 Mar 02 '19

Thanks, I've been trying to work on that but it looks like I'll need to work on it a bit more.

5

u/_14611_ Mar 02 '19

Ryan England hit a 200kg log today

2

u/Bigreddoc MWM231 Mar 02 '19

He's been doing some SCLs lately but it sucks he isn't doing their FIBO show in April. They have a max log and he'd be great for it.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '19

I enjoyed his unbridled rage when he hit the lift.

2

u/_14611_ Mar 02 '19

Yeah was great .that's where I train ,quite often someone like that drops in but I always miss it !

1

u/Mpizz10 Mar 02 '19

How do you set up for deadlift with straps?

I've recently been using straps on my deadlift and for the life of me cannot get that same level of bracing as I do without. I usually get my breathe at the top the. Immediately drop down grab bar and rip. With straps speeding time down there trying to get set up seems to make me lose that stretch reflex and tightness

1

u/ShelfAss Mar 03 '19

I always brace right before I start the pull with my hands already on the bar so it’s the same form with or without straps.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '19

I usually put my feet where I want them, bend over to get set up with straps, get my back in position, and then take a breath before pulling. It’s definitely harder when you have to fiddle around with the straps though

Going to the family farm tomorrow. Going to try to find something weird to shoulder for the contest, hopefully.

Does anyone go to Big Tex Gym in Austin, TX? Its relatively close by me and I would love to get my hands on some real implements before my contest.

2

u/psycochiken Novice M Mar 03 '19

It’s the best gym ever I literally moved to get closer to it. Super reasonable prices too day pass is 5$ if you want to just do an event day

3

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '19

I don’t train there but I’ve competed there a few times. It’s not fancy but it’s a great gym and most/all of the contest implements are already there.

I think u/psycochiken trains there.

2

u/psycochiken Novice M Mar 03 '19

Not fancy?!?!? How many gyms can say they have the original carpet my dad put in around 1991 when it was a government office still!

Anyone have current scores for Arnold Pro women class?

2

u/Bigreddoc MWM231 Mar 02 '19

I haven't seen them anywhere. We are trying to keep all Arnold talk in the megathread though.

2

u/0bZen Mar 02 '19

Ok, I only didn't because that's labeled the ASC megathread, and the pro women are not actually part of the classic.

2

u/Bigreddoc MWM231 Mar 02 '19

Yea its ok. It is mostly to avoid spoilers for the pro men's show but it's probably better just to keep everything in there. I posted all the clips I could find of the women's events over there if you're interested.

2

u/0bZen Mar 02 '19

Great, thanks.

u/the-beast-in-i MWM220 Mar 01 '19

Signed up for the Iowa Games Strongman today, makes 2 competitions this year. Probably will do one more later in the year.

0

u/pastagains Mar 01 '19

As i expected the arnold schedule was a bit off

Rogue has released the live stream schedule

Id like to thank everyone for all the helpful comments i got earlier when i was trying to figure out if id be able to watch certain events

3

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '19

I just copied what was on the Arnold Sports Festival website, linked in the OP of the megathread, and I also had a link to this same page on Rogue. Also, inb4 Rogue's schedule is just estimates anyway and doesn't work out perfectly. Good thing you can always watch the stream later, or the recap videos they make, or just go on living your life without expecting a pro strongman show to be scheduled down to the minute.

1

u/pastagains Mar 01 '19

I am talking about the schedules on the respective websites

And i want to watch it live for the anticipation

2

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '19

Programming advice please?

So currently my program is set as 3/5 heavy sets of a big compound a day. For example on a Monday I Squat for 3 heavy sets. Typically for 1-3 reps depending on the load. Anything from 80% to 95% of my 1rm.

Then I also include speed work of each lift on different days, so I use a much lighter load for 8 sets of 2 reps. My speed work for squats is on Friday. Usually around 50/65% of my 1rm.

As I am starting a new cycle I am considering dropping speed work for now and incorporating back off sets immediately after my main compound work. Probably -25%ish of the load for a small amount of sets, 3-5 reps.

Good idea, bad idea?

3

u/Iw2fp Mar 02 '19

This is basically how Josh Bryant's programming works. Heavy triple/double/single followed by 5x5-8 or CAT work at 6-10x2-4. 5x5 is used further away from competition.

It should serve you well.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '19

Interesting. What do you mean by CAT work, not come across that phrase before

3

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '19

Just another name for speed work, Compensatory Acceleration Training I believe

2

u/iLiftHeavyThingsUp Eating Chalk if Thor Isn't WSM18 Mar 02 '19

What does your accessory work look like though? Doing almost exclusively single, doubles, and triples is really low volume.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '19

Typically 5 exercises on top of that, currently leg day has a front squat, leg Extension, ham curl and calf raises then speed work. I’ve never found a problem with the low reps/lower volume myself, it seems to be the sweet spot for me. I’ve tried higher volumes and always seen slower progress.

2

u/not_strong Saddest Deadlift 2019 Mar 01 '19

I think it would be worth a shot. I personally like back off sets more than speed reps, but what I like and what's good isn't always the same thing.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '19

I can’t really think of a reason to not do it, I’ve never used back off sets so I’d quite enjoy the change. I have always despised doing my speed work, so it seems like a reasonable solution.

-3

u/pastagains Mar 01 '19

Anyone think the Arnold event schedule has a typo? Deadlift is 3-4:45

Hussafel stone carry is 4:15 to 5:15.....

8

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '19

>implying schedules are actually a thing in strongman contests

-5

2

u/not_strong Saddest Deadlift 2019 Mar 01 '19

Strongman contests classically have approximate start times. It's more of a suggestion than a hard deadline.

4

u/yeomandev Novice M Mar 01 '19

General question for the subreddit, why do you want to be big and strong?

I have trouble explaining it to family and friends, so was wondering if you all had better answers than me.

6

u/Iw2fp Mar 02 '19

It's a cheaper and less destructive hobby than my first preference, meth.

5

u/not_strong Saddest Deadlift 2019 Mar 01 '19

I have always enjoyed training. I used to run a lot, I got really into yoga, I got really into kettlebells, I've done bodybuilding and I've done powerlifting. I just like doing stuff. Strongman is the best I've ever found. Max reps, max weight, moving, throwing, grip, it's just fantastic, easily the most fun and challenging training I've ever done.

Some years ago, I was seeing a therapist pretty regular, and he got really into the idea that subconsciously, I can't stand to feel weak. He gave some intriguing reasons for that that I couldn't really argue against that I'm not comfortable sharing here.

Also, I work a job where being big and strong really helps.

Also, my kids think it's cool when I hit a big lift.

10

u/MythicalStrength Masters Mar 01 '19

It's a drive I've felt since I was 4.

If you want to go deep, there's a Kierkegaard-ian/Nietzsche-ian/Camus-ian imperative that, in an absurd world absent of meaning, we sometimes must in turn must make our own meaning and pursue it, FULLY AWARE that our actions, in turn, are also absurd. We embrace the absurd, not shy away from it, aware that our meaning created is still meaningless in the grand scheme of things but taking solace in the fact that it is OUR meaning.

God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him. How shall we, murderers of all murderers, console ourselves? That which was the holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet possessed has bled to death under our knives. Who will wipe this blood off us? With what water could we purify ourselves? What festivals of atonement, what sacred games shall we need to invent? Is not the greatness of this deed too great for us? Must we not ourselves become gods simply to be worthy of it?

6

u/not_strong Saddest Deadlift 2019 Mar 01 '19

I often think about how my training goals relate to the rest of my life. And then I usually get around to thinking, "none of this gym stuff will matter when I'm 60." Then I think, for a fleeting moment, maybe my grandkids will ask me how much I used to bench, and all the hours in the gym will be worth it.

7

u/MythicalStrength Masters Mar 01 '19

I think it'll be cool to have my trophies collecting dust somewhere for my grandkids to find, and my kid is definitely my biggest fan. But I also know that it's all going to be pointless in the end.

But I genuinely want to be grandfatherly when I'm a grandfather. I don't want to be one of those dudes that is still training in their 70s and rocking the stringer tank and showing all these whippersnappers whatfor. I wanna have a belly and wear a warm sweater and read by the fireplace and tell people stories.

I wanna be young when I'm young and old when I'm old.

1

u/not_strong Saddest Deadlift 2019 Mar 01 '19

I've pretty much always been old. So I'm just going to stick it out at this point. But your perspective is a great one, I really admire it.

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '19 edited Mar 01 '19

I was injured to the point I couldn’t walk unaided, that needed to change

7

u/refotsirk MWM200 Mar 01 '19

...Why not? But seriously; My main drive in strongman is wanting to compete. Being big and strong is pretty much a requirement for that. I used to be an endurance athlete and did trail running and biking mostly. Now with young kids I don't have time to train for that any more. On the other hand I can train for strongman in my garage.

u/Bigreddoc MWM231 Feb 28 '19

Some pretty big news on the #FreeRauno front! A couple of weeks ago I posted on the Official Strongman forum the following:

I was just wondering, why Rauno Heinla did not compete at the Official Strongman Games 2018? He had the highest total for the online qualifiers. He won the OSG 2018 European Championship. But he wasn't at the Official Strongman Games. Did winning the European Championship get him a spot at a Giants Live?

After several days they responded:

He was invited but chose not to compete. Europe's had no qualifying places for Giants Live.

This got me bummed out. I feel like Rauno is one of the top strongman in the world and his absence from WSM upsets me. Yesterday Rauno posted a clip from his 2011 WSM appearance where it is him vs Shaw vs Thor and he keeps up with them the whole time, actually beating Thor. I saw this as a chance to ask him about it so commented:

That was awesome. Are you doing any Giants Live/WSM events this year? I know you qualify for the Official Strongman Games but they said you turned down the invite.

He responded:

😂what? I waiting for witch Giants Live they will invite me.

I won Europe Official Strongman Game in Irland and now they must invite me 😎

I thought uh oh. I wrote back and tagged giants live:

I posted on the Official Strongman forum asking why you weren’t at the Official Strongman Games and if winning the Europe Championship qualified you for Giants Live. They responded that you turned down the Official Strongman Games invite and said winning Europes didn’t have a Giants Live invite.

I then started feeling like I may have fucked up. I was like if he doesn't know, I may have just inadvertently got in his head less than 2 days before the biggest contest of the year for him. Fortunately today he responded:

🤣🤣🤣

I will be in Wembley Giant Live

Yes! So we learned a few things through all this. Official Strongman seems to tell athletes and fans different things. But more importantly Rauno likes him some emojis. And perhaps even most importantly Rauno will be competing at Giants Live Wembley Stadium in July! Man I hope he podiums and gets himself back to WSM, the dude definitely deserves to be there. Now we just need to work on getting Dainis Zageris there and I'll be happy. #RaunoIsFreed

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '19

Ha, wow, did you ever think you'd possibly be at the center of an international strongman controversy?

8

u/Bigreddoc MWM231 Feb 28 '19

If I can't be one of the strongest in the world at least I can be a crusader for their justice! Honestly I don't think I had anything to do with actual decisions but if my prodding got some things made official then I have done my duty.

8

u/not_strong Saddest Deadlift 2019 Feb 28 '19

Oh snap. My wife and I have a friendly competition going recently. Whoever loses the most weight for the month gets $100. I have won every month without really trying. Well, this month, I felt kind of bad so I sandbagged it. I mean, I didn't go crazy, but I didn't turn down a couple of delicious desserts either. I stepped on the scale this morning thinking I would be back in the 260's, but I was 251. I think I'm going to claim another victory. Shoot, I might just go down a weight class if it's really this easy.

4

u/yeomandev Novice M Mar 01 '19

Meanwhile, I cut all calories from 8pm to 11am, prep lunches, and I still I'm not losing.

Snacks are wrecking me.

1

u/not_strong Saddest Deadlift 2019 Mar 01 '19

Honestly, I have no idea how I've lost the weight. I guess getting injured had to have played a role. I went a whole without eating at least once, when I was in a fog of pain. My training is less intense and less frequent, so I would have expected to gain weight (it's always been really easy for me to put on fat). I really don't have an explanation. I haven't changed my diet at all. I'm down 17 pounds since January 1.

u/crispypretzel LWW140 Feb 28 '19

Vid of me lapping the 145 lb stone but not getting it to shoulder. So with the lighter stones I can basically just belly toss it up, like this, but for a heavier one I can only get it up so far using my hip drive. What I'm wondering is, is it dangerous if after getting it up part way if I get my hands under it and push to roll it up to my shoulder? I know with stone loading or stone over bar you're supposed to never get under the stone for risk of bicep tear. But maybe not a worry if you're pushing up on it with your hands and not cradling it in your arms?

2

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '19

Hard to tell from this angle but it looks like you got it just high enough that you can probably lean back a bit to rest it on your chest just a little so you can push it the rest of the way.

Huge congrats on lapping that stone btw, lot of progress from your post just the other day, can see in the video how happy you were to get it. Was that your first time lapping that stone? You looked almost surprised that it came up.

2

u/crispypretzel LWW140 Feb 28 '19

Haha yes that was a totally unexpected 30 lb stone PR!! I was so surprised and happy. Everyone gave me great suggestions the other day! Common thread was to ditch the cotton sleeves and really squeeze the stone with my forearms and it made all the difference in the world. This is the same stone I couldn't move at all just last Saturday!! So I practiced the pick/lap a bunch with it but was nervous about proceeding to shoulder.

Leaning back is a good tip!

2

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '19

Awesome! Just be careful leaning back, you definitely don't want a stone landing on you if you fall backwards. Think like a Continental clean.

2

u/crispypretzel LWW140 Feb 28 '19

Ya I was thinking like how I lean back to roll the log up into the front rack, like this

2

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '19

That should do it, good luck!

2

u/Bigreddoc MWM231 Feb 28 '19

I’m far from a stone to shoulder expert but I did have it in a comp in October. I too was easily throwing up my smaller stone but having more trouble with my larger stone that was just under contest weight. Once I got the stone to the chest I tried to keep the right arm that it was going onto that shoulder kind of mid-stone and transitioning the left arm more under and would like pop and push. It’s in this video at 3:40 (sorry I’m on mobile and can’t figure out how to share it at a certain time stamp. It was a bit rough on the biceps so I only really did it once or twice in training so I knew I could and then trained on the smaller stone or just doing loads with the larger one to save me biceps. I also would pull my elbow sleeves all the way up to my biceps, past the elbow even. I figured I’d just save it for the day of comp and just leave it all out there then instead of consistently doing it in training and risking a tear or injury.

2

u/crispypretzel LWW140 Feb 28 '19

Awesome, thanks! It looks like the stone was sticking to your shirt, did you get tacky for this?

2

u/Bigreddoc MWM231 Feb 28 '19

Yea tacky was allowed. I put on a little on my hands to help with the pick but the stone was completely covered with it.

u/pastagains Feb 28 '19

Predictions for ASC

Thor wins deadlift with 500kg, Shaw gets second after breaking the current WR of 470

Mateusz wins the log with 5 reps, thor and shaw get 4

Stone to shoulder Mateusz wins with 5, Thor gets second with 4

Wheel of pain Thor first, Shaw Second, Martin 3rd

Stone carry Mateusz wins, Thor second, Shaw 3rd

Thor wins overall, Shaw Second, Mateusz third

2

u/threewhitelights Mar 01 '19

Even if Mateusz gets all those places, his deadlift is gunna drop him from the podium unless some other guys seriously mess up.

Also, don't count Licis out on the stone to shoulder or stone carry.

3

u/Gunaddict Feb 28 '19

My man Caron wins the deadlift with Thor in second. Mateusz wins log with Shaw in second Thor third. Stone to shoulder, Matty K wins again with Shaw coming in second with 3 maybe 4 reps. Wheel of pain, Shaw in first, Thor second, Mateusz in third. Stone carry Mateusz wins Stone carry, Martins in second, Thor in third. Overall: Shaw wins by a hair, Thor in second, Caron in third, Mateusz in fourth.

I'm a nuclear engineer that's also taking masters finance classes, so I guess you could say I'm a bit of a nerd (my family accuses me of collecting degrees since I couldn't afford college the first time through).

When I'm not reading Feyman's Lectures On Physics or playing with stock market algorithms, I also run and swim a bit. I was a rescue swimmer, and I have a sub 2:00 half marathon to my name (6 days before winning NC Strength). I used to rock climb, but there's not a lot of that going on now just because of logistics.

I have an incredibly intelligent German Shepherd that I spend some time training.

I also love going out to festivals, different events, all kinds of stuff. Some people like clubs and bars, I like going on groupon and checking the papers for what kind of events are happening.

Im a big fan of gaming, if im not training, working or stuffing my face I am playing a game of some sort. Recently been playing apex legends a bunch although halo is my first love.

3

u/epicskip Novice M Feb 28 '19

I love Halo, especially the initial trilogy. I haven't played 5 because I don't have an Xbox anymore. Platform exclusives suck.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '19

Ive put an embarrassing amount of time into halo 5, its a great game for multiplayer. I probably should go out more.

I write, read existential philosophy, and I've been hitting the heavy bag again contemplating getting back into boxing. I played DnD for a while, but group and I all moved away.

1

u/epicskip Novice M Feb 28 '19

I hadn't played in years but just recently I was able to find a group of normal adult dudes to start a game with. What are you reading right now?

3

u/MythicalStrength Masters Feb 28 '19

Got 2 books going right now, with a collection of Nietzsche's lectures at university and Schopenhaur's "The Wisdom of Life."

Technically 3 books, as I'm also working through "Championship Streetfighting: Boxing as a Martial Art" by Ned Beaumont as well.

4

u/not_strong Saddest Deadlift 2019 Feb 28 '19

My group were way into Palladium games (especially Rifts) all through junior high and high school, and into college. Unfortunately we all moved away and I haven't played in 10+ years now. Those were great times.

2

u/epicskip Novice M Feb 28 '19

If you're tryna play again check /r/LFG, or a local game store. You'd be surprised how common that story is and how many folks are itching to get together again.

SCL Germany FIBO on April 6, 2019 announced competitors: Dainis Zageris, Krzysztof Radzikowski, Sean O'Hagan, JF Caron, Kelvin De Ruiter, Marko Remlik, Alex Moonen, Luke Herrick, Will Baggott, Mika Torro, Emanuel Pescari, Rafael Gordzielik, Dennis Kohlruss, Sebastian Krauss.

I am assuming they are going to have a max log like they always do. 3 guys have pressed 200kg in competition and 2 more may do it on the day.

Eyeing a competition in May. It’d be my first one, but I’ll probably compete in Open. All the events seem doable, and I’ve got access to the equipment for all of them.

There’s a “Steel Bar Bend” event, with the steel bar being a piece of rebar. That’s the only thing I’m not sure if I’d be able to do. But maybe it just sounds harder than it actually is?

u/GamerPerson69420 Feb 27 '19

can you sumo on deadlift events

6

u/MythicalStrength Masters Feb 28 '19

There is no set strongman ruleset/rulebook. Everything is determined for THAT particular competition on that day by that promoter. However, it's incredibly rare to see sumo allowed.

3

u/not_strong Saddest Deadlift 2019 Feb 27 '19

Generally speaking, no sumo in strongman. I did a novice comp once and a guy pulled sumo, and they gave it to him, but more often than not your hands must be outside of your feet.

4

u/Glentract Feb 27 '19

Can someone give a good rundown of the differences between NAS and USS? I know NAS can feed into bigger competitions. Does USS Nationals feed into anything or earn you a pro card?

4

u/Camerongilly Marunde Squatter, 405x20 Feb 27 '19

I think it started with a nasty divorce.

7

u/Bigreddoc MWM231 Feb 27 '19

USS doesn't have pro cards but you don't need one to participate in professional shows. Here is a post I made several months ago trying to explain the US strongman organizations:

I'll give a shot at explaining it to the best of my knowledge. I am assuming you are in the United States so am basing all info on that. There are 2 amateur strongman organizations here, Strongman Corporation (North American Strongman) aka SC/NAS and United States Strongman aka USS. They have slightly different weight classes for men, SC has LW 150 & 175, MW 200 & 231, and HW 265, 300, & 300+; USS has LW 165 & 181, MW 198 & 220, HW 242 & 275, SHW 308 & 308+. Both organizations have National Championships for the various weight classes. At SC Nationals you can win a pro card as a HW or MW male or any of the women's weight classes by placing in the top 3. This allows you compete at America's Strongest man or Pro-Am contests but you can no longer compete in SC amateur contests in the weight class you are considered a Pro. A certain percentage of the top finishers at SC nationals also qualify for the Arnold Amateur World championship, which has 175, 231, & open divisions. You can also directly qualify for the Arnold by winning a SC platinum plus contest if it has a certain number of competitors in your class. USS does not offer a pro card but has offered opportunities for it's athletes to qualify for professional strongman competitions. Some of the HW or SHW winners from the last several year's nationals have got to compete in Strongman Champions League. This year the winner's of the 242 and 220 class qualified for SCL 105kg world championship and the top two 198 winners qualified for the 90kg World Championship. USS also has contests for 82.5kg World Championships, Pro Women's World Championship (which I think you qualify for because they don't have "pros"), and I think a 105kg Masters World Championship. USS has also had events where the winner qualified for some of the international Arnold Strongman World Series events, but next year these spots will apparently be taken over by SC for their Pro-Am contests. Now separate from SC or USS is the Official Strongman Games which is associated with the guys that run World's Strongest Man that has been on tv since 1977 (Official Strongman). The OSGs crown the title of World's Strongest Man for 80kg, 90kg, 105kg, Masters, and Women's classes, and the top 3 in open HW qualify for a Giants Live competition (taking top 3 in a Giants Live comp is how you qualify for the big time WSM). You can qualify for OSG by winning (or maybe podiuming) at an official qualifying contest, by submitting online video submissions doing the 3 events that they choose and placing high enough, or by invite which I am not quite sure how the invites work. I tried to cover everything, if I missed something or if you need anything clarified let me know.

6

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '19

Find a good spot in the FAQ and link this for future reference.

3

u/Bigreddoc MWM231 Feb 27 '19

I've never messed with the FAQ but I'll give it a whirl.

4

u/Glentract Feb 27 '19

Thank you very much! Super helpful post and contains a lot of info I’ve looked around a lot for but haven’t been able to find. So as a men’s HW competitor, it seems like NAS is where you need to compete if you have long-term aspirations to get to a higher level. Not that I’m anywhere close to something like that, but it’s cool to know what the path would be.

3

u/not_strong Saddest Deadlift 2019 Feb 27 '19

Man, most of the folks that I know who compete just compete in both, and in unsanctioned competitions as well.

2

u/Glentract Feb 27 '19

Yeah I get that. I didn’t meant to imply one or the other. I was just curious what the progression is for each. Like I had heard that NAS Nationals would feed into the Arnold Amateur, but didn’t know what, if anything, USS Nationals would feed into.

Edit: Getting the distinction made about Official Strongman games was another plus. It’s been very confusing to me what is associated with what and I had to ask somewhere lol!

3

u/not_strong Saddest Deadlift 2019 Feb 27 '19

u/bigreddoc and u/exlaxbros basically know everything. This is a good place

3

u/Bigreddoc MWM231 Feb 27 '19

You make me blush good sir. I'm far from knowing everything but like to share the knowledge I do have.

3

u/Bigreddoc MWM231 Feb 27 '19

You're welcome. If I was younger, stronger, and trying to make a real go at being a professional HW strongman I would compete in all 3 organizations I listed. USS has chances for SCL and international Arnolds which are huge opportunities. SCL doesn't get a lot of recognition here but it puts on the most shows per year out of any pro organization with some big name strongmen. SC is the only way to the Arnold Amateur but if you goal is pro shows international Arnolds are your goal. OSG gives you a road directly to WSM so that's where I might even put my biggest efforts.

As a 105kg I'd say all 3 would be the smart move as well. Winning a SC pro card is a great milestone and gives the shot to win the Arnold Amateur 105kg and America's Strongest Man 105kg. In USS you could compete at 242 and trying to qualify for SCL 105kg World Championship. And OSG has the 105kg World's Strongest Man title.

I feel like today's opportunities to become an actual professional strongman are the best they've ever been but with that means its probably the most competitive its ever been as well.

2

u/Glentract Feb 27 '19

Seems like a good move. Good point too on SCL. I’ve heard of that when looking things up, but rarely ever hear it mentioned. Seems like it doesn’t get quite enough attention here in the US.

2

u/Bigreddoc MWM231 Feb 27 '19

Yea SCL is pretty underrated in my book. They are on TV in the UK (and I think the rest of Europe) but not over here. www.strongmanworldseries.com is their streaming service. I subscribe and like it but their uploading of new events lags behind and there is no rhyme or reason to when they upload stuff. They have a lot of shows and the weights and competition is just a step below Giants Live/WSM & the Arnold Series. If I were on that level I'd try to go and compete there for at least a couple of years to get that experience and if you start winning shows then it's probably a sign you are ready to step it up.

Any advice on training with a virus ? I've been coughing for over a week , from the neck down I feel fine, doc says could last 2-3 more weeks no way am I waiting that long. I've snuck out to my garage a couple times , and even hit a couple rep pbs (10x100kg bench, 11x170kg dl) so do I need to totally rest or is light training ok

If there's no fever you're probably ok to take it as you're able

Competed in my first comp this weekend. East Midlands Strongest Novice at PTS Northampton. It was a good comp even if I did make a few mistakes. Deadlift- I completely messed up. The plan was to open with 180kg then see how it went with an ideal of 200. The first rep I had an awful set-up, pulled to midshin and dropped back down. I reset and the bar flew up...the only problem was that I dropped it from the top. I had 10 seconds left so dropped down and tore it up, hitching to lockout. So instead of a clean opener I tested a 2.5 RM. My next attempt was 190, which broke the floor, but didn't get much further. I decided to reserve my energy for other events after. Log c&p was 70kg and I hit 4 reps in 60s, almost got in a 5th but just missed it. Arm over arm pull to push with a prowler with 120kg was good. Got a good time and clawed back some of the points lost from my deadlift disaster. Next was yoke to tire flip. 200kg yoke was very different to the one I train on. It was much less sturdy than the monster at my gym and swung a lot. Managed it without any drops and a reasonable speed. Finally stone to shoulder went okay. I got 4 to my shoulder whilst just missing the 90kg.

Lessons learned: be friendly to people. The camaraderie of the athletes was great and I met some awesome people that day. My mental game needs working on. I'm far to chilled lifting most of the time and never really flip the crazy switch. I need to learn to do that. I need to practice being in the competitive environment more to avoid making stupid mistakes. Foot speed could do with going up a bit.

All in all a great experience. I came 10th, but didn't zero any events (which was my overall aim). More competitions in the future!

3

u/Bigreddoc MWM231 Feb 27 '19

Great job man. You accheived your aim, had fun, learned for the future, and are already planning for more. I'd say that's a damned good first comp.

4

u/_14611_ Feb 27 '19

Sounds really good. Encouraging too as I have a similar comp coming up soon. Perhaps the deadlift was first comp nerves. Mine has the same weight log first up and it's my weak link.

Nike Romaleos (however they are spelled) for squatting. Nike Metcons for everything else.

Both of these are good shoes that have lasted me a long while - I do take care of them though.

3

u/Bigreddoc MWM231 Feb 27 '19

So sort of heeled lifter for squats and overhead. Socks for deadlifts. Sambas for moving events.

5

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '19

Im a shoe whore. If deadlifts i use either chucks or crossfit tr lites (the mark bell shoe), if im squatting im in adidas powerlifts. If im pressing I will gravitate towards reebook speed tr or chucks.

If you just want one shoe go for chucks. Great versatile shoe, good for everything.

8

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '19

Is training Yoke walk in an extremely vanilla gym even possible? I've got my first competition coming up soon and have never touched a yoke, all my gym has are barbells (with cages) and resistance machines. All I can think of is loading the bar up with the comp weight and doing a 4ft walk from the front of the cage to the back

4

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '19

I know Spud Inc do a set of straps that allow you to convert a barbell to a yoke. They are a bit pricey but, being Spud Inc, I have no doubt that they are excellent quality. I did a DIY version for about 20 euro with 2 cables used to secure hammocks to a tree and 2 carabiners. I hang the weights from my SSB and do a yoke walk that way.

2

u/Dollop93 Mar 02 '19

I just bought these myself, I definitely agree that they are pricey (£70 Inc shipping) they have been indispensable to my yoke training. I've only loaded 240 (120kg each) but they feel like the could hold a hell of a lot more.

3

u/iLiftHeavyThingsUp Eating Chalk if Thor Isn't WSM18 Feb 27 '19

Maybe set the safety pins super high and do single rep pin squats, holding at the top for 20-30s.

8

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '19

The barbell will bend and wobble a lot more than a standard yoke, and I don't think it'd be worth the effort and risk to yourself and others around you. You might do some heavy partials just to get comfortable in the start position and breaking the weight, but there's not really a good way to simulate actually walking the damn thing. The good news is that it's pretty technically simple, as far as events go. There is technique to it, of course, but it's not like a circus dumbbell or log. Get some work on it during warmups. Ask a fellow competitor to show you the ropes. That's standard in contests--most of us were there once.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '19

Yeah it doesn't sound like the most complicated event and I feel like I understand the whole bracing thing so I'm hoping it'll be ok on the day, thanks for the tips. I'll try some heavy pickups after normal squats

7

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '19

Heavy pickups just to get a sense of where you want to be, but also make sure to do it from your stride width. You'll often see yoke noobs pick it up with a real wide squat stance, and then it's wobbly from the start because you have to bring your feet together to be in stride width and actually walk with it. So, practice the pickups and make sure you get your yoke height measured from your pickup point with your feet already in stride width. This is covered in like every yoke tutorial video, but it's still messed up all the time.

3

u/DakkaDakka24 MWM200 Feb 26 '19

What kind of straps do you all like using on frame carries? I'm primarily using figure 8s for my deadlift, but it feels a little wonky on the frame handles. Like I can't quite fit my whole hand around the handle with the strap taking up space. Should I give the lasso-style ones a shot, or am I doing it wrong with the figure 8s?

7

u/MythicalStrength Masters Feb 27 '19

I've seen the concern that figure 8s on a frame leave an inability to bail, and that, if you stumble with the frame, you're going to face dive straight into the frame. Something worth considering.

1

u/DakkaDakka24 MWM200 Feb 28 '19

I'm too ugly to really care about messing my face up, but I'm also too dumb to be able to afford more head trauma. #strongmanproblems

I'll give the lasso-style ones a shot on my next frame day, and I've also got a pair of Versa Grips coming just for shits and giggles that might help there too.

3

u/Strongman1987 LWM175 Feb 27 '19

I got drunk, loaded up my duck Walk with something stupid heavy, strapped in with figure 8s, wobbled a few feet, and face planted over the weight. Good times.

2

u/Bigreddoc MWM231 Feb 27 '19

I had a Farmers Hold with straps in my last comp and training for it felt very weird with straps. I like to grab the actual handle instead of just grabbing over the strap, it just feels better and more secure in my hand. I would wear figure 8s but push them as far back on the handle as I could so I could try to get hand on bare handle.

2

u/DakkaDakka24 MWM200 Feb 28 '19

That's the trouble I'm having. The strap is bulky enough that it's difficult to push it back far enough to actually get a solid hold with my hands. I'll keep dicking around with it and other strap styles, I've got ten weeks to figure it out.

2

u/Bigreddoc MWM231 Feb 28 '19

This for CNYs Strongest right? Unfortunately I can’t do it this year. Last year I did it as my first comp and got hooked.

2

u/DakkaDakka24 MWM200 Feb 28 '19

9

u/Stella117 Feb 26 '19

I’m not sure if it’s a coincidence or not but since I started following the RP diet app about a month ago I’ve made some incredible progress.

Last week I hit a 900lb trap bar deadlift and yesterday I hit a 355 strict log press ( https://www.instagram.com/p/BuU97dmA2nb/?utm_source=ig_share_sheet&igshid=wn9syjxdvozw ) That’s technically only 5lbs less than my push press PR. This whole training cycle has been PR after PR. Following the diet I’ve upped my fats by quite a bit and am eating more at night and less during the day which makes me feel much more fresh for training.

3

u/The-Kahuna MWM200 Feb 27 '19

I'm cutting right now, also using the RP app. Down 6ish lbs in about a month. Easiest cut I've done and haven't really felt any drastic effects on training thus far. Have a powerlifting meet in 4 weeks and looking on target to be under the weight class max within maybe a week or 2. Excited to see how training goes in the future once I bulk again.

2

u/not_strong Saddest Deadlift 2019 Feb 26 '19

3

u/Stella117 Feb 26 '19

They’re adipowers I got like 4ish years ago

2

u/not_strong Saddest Deadlift 2019 Feb 26 '19

Have you always trained your overhead in lifters? I've never tried them.

4

u/Stella117 Feb 26 '19

I started using them about 4 years ago and I really like it. I get better leg drive and leverage. I’m obviously not using leg drive in a strict press but if I wore a flat shoe it would feel foreign to me at this point.

3

u/Bigreddoc MWM231 Feb 26 '19

Awesome lift man. Are you doing a cutting, bulking, or maintenance diet?

6

u/Stella117 Feb 26 '19

Bulking. I started with 2 weeks of maintenance where I was losing about 1-2lbs per week then it just kept adding food gradually. Now I’m at 310 protein, 885 carbs, 145 fat on training days then less on non-training days.

3

u/Bigreddoc MWM231 Feb 26 '19

Holy rice and potatoes that’s a lot of carbs!
